@Jemoh66 I understand and agree with you. My point was more to do with masters turning their disciples into themselves whereas it is possible to have different masters and different takes on how to express a piece

@falconfira I was able to sit in the audience in a Masterclass in 1986 at USC. It was free and all those that participated in the actual class did not pay. A lot of the major classical guitar artists teach in University's with Classical Guitar Majors. Christopher Parkening teaches at Pepperdine and holds free master classes. USC has the Romeros , Scott Tenant. Juan Serrano(flamenco) teaches in one of the UC schools. There are a lot of great teachers for those willing to learn.

Yes there is always the danger of "cloning" the master, but the Ciaccona is Segovia at his best. He was devine playing it and what's better than to achieve perfection? The Ciaccona is a piece where Bach peaked and I believe the guitar is the best instrument to capture all its richness of tunes, texture and feelings (albeit it sounds beautiful on any instrument). The Ciaccona sounds so modern, albeit it was composed centuries ago, but on top of that Segovia manages to imprint his own genius on it. Rarely composer and performer reach perfect bliss together (my tears flow every time I hear it).

@aristotle358 apples and oranges. She is not there to prove how well she can play. She has already proven herself and thus was allowed an audience with the master. She is there for his input, so he can raise her playing even higher. A trained ear can hear that his sound and ear for the piece is superior to hers. Also he is quite kind and patient with her; not like his is with the guys.

Maybe Segovia believed didn't think of it as humiliation, merely what he called character building

@aristotle358 She was intimidated becasue he was Andres Segovia... Even Oscar Ghiglia got nervous around him and from what I understand he was one of Segovia's favorites... What would be the point in a masterclass where the teacher didn't interrupt you to give tips and advice? That's called a recital...

From the shape of the headstock, it looks as if he is playing a Jose Ramirez estudio (student model)... Maybe he only used the concert models for concerts? Anyone know anything about this?

I'm not talking about the fingering only, there are a lot more things, and a piece so enormous there must be more, than just: make it more rubato...Nobody asked why, ever, so, there was no need de say why...Musicians have evolved ages, compared to Segovia's time, and that is reflected on the instrument...

A lot of people talk about his impatience, and I think this comes from the masterclass where he somewhat goes off on the guy. But the reality of that one was, the guy had no business in a masterclass and was wasting his time and that of the others in the workshop. Apart from that most of what I have seen is gentle encouragement but without walking on eggshells so as not to offend the student... The idea that a masterclass instructor should be a cheerleader is ridiculous...

Segovia deserves props for being the first to transcribe the chaccone for guitar. But it is my opinion that he is a less polished, less shmoltzy player than many. Too critical. John Williams on the Baroque album plays the most beautiful rendition till this day . Hands down

If he would have been that patient and "easy going" with all his students, maybe they could have been better. I think it is better to teach with patience and explanation, than imposition and humillitation...

What a swindler! This sort of people used to be named "picaros" in Spain. No doubt Segovia was one of the best. This video is a good example of what not to do and not to be as persons and musicians. When you listen a tateless classical guitarrist is because is Made in Segovia´s school.

The trouble with master classes is that the master tries to make a clone of his own playing rather than letting the person express his/her self. I think she played well but was intimidated by his constant stopping and getting her to play his way. How boring music would be if we were all clones of one master or another!!
