I have about 16 Seiko’s or so in my collection and a year or so ago I bought a Proxima Scuba 🤿 Master 300 . It’s Proxima homage watch to the Marine Master 300 . I paid only $220 for this watch and it definitely compares to my $500-$600 Seiko’s I own and in some regards even better.

Great video, although I would have loved to see you take them into the water where they belong! I've gone through many watches over the years and I always come back to my SKX for surfing and diving. It is just the perfect balance of size and overall heft. (I did upgrade to a ceramic bezel and Strapcode bracelet from Mark at Island) Also, regarding the 7S26 movement, I have to say that it's my only watch that doesn't hack or hand wind but it's my favorite movement. For a true tool watch, it's perfect; absolutely no need for hacking or hand wind. If I haven't worn it for a bit I literally give it 2 shakes and it starts up. The "Magic Lever" winding system is so efficient, the winding is effortless. My SKX has been on surfing adventures in multiple countries. It's been pounded, ground and dropped, but hasn't missed a beat!
@oktc68 Жыл бұрын
All the nh35 family use the magic lever system, I suspect that it's to be found on all their automatic movements. Not to mention everyone else's now. Genius in its simplicity, I really rate the NH35 family, altho' fiddly to regulate they are capable of extreme accuracy on wrist over 24 hours, they are happiest when wound fully after 24 hours of unwinding they do seem to lose consistency but if you move enough to keep it topped up they are great little movements. I've got around 14 and 3 of those gain up to 3 secs per day on my wrist (where it counts as) and the rest are all up to +10 SPD, I've had to regulate some as they were losing time which I can't tolerate. Not easy to reproduce the best results but easy to get them under +10 SPD.

Dan you are on a roll and you even incur wounds on our behalf! I like steel and I see that the other brands shy away from it. i would guess that no one - even Seiko - can equal the Islander steel bracelet.

Tricky to make comparisons. If your Uncle Ned laid them all out and said, "pick one" it only makes sense to grab the Seiko. You buy a watch because you like it but if you get tired of it is anyone else going to like it? It doesn't matter much when you're only $100 bucks in I guess but that's what I consider the X Factor. I bought the Heimdallr homeage to the Gen.2 Monster because I figured that's as close as I'm going to get. All things considered it's probably a better watch than the original.....but if I had any sense I would pony up for the original.

I've had the heimdaller on my list, because they have a Aluminium Copper version that looks pretty good. The lume is different, even with the same chemical because of the thickness of the application of lume. Its a liquid when it's being applied to the dial /bezel.

Steeldive's blue AR coating rules this out for me. Generally the San Martin AR coating seems better. I wonder what AR coating if any the Islander has because I see no blue tint in that one. My pick is the Seiko.

Hey Dan, fine review for starts & Thanks! What type of oil or silicone lube do you recommend. One of my favorite watches is my Steinhart Ocean 1 Vintage GMT (office…ETA 2893-2) & yes, the bezel lines up BUT……gee whiz that dang bezel can be close to impossible for my almost 70 yo arthritic hands to turn the thing. Thanks (I lean towards silicone for lasting power but I really do not have a clue.)

These are homages to seikos. They may not have the full iso ratings that a proper "dive" watch has, but they replicate the aesthetics and have adequate water protection for most users without the substantial extra cost.

Could be turned out a bit different if you gave all these watches a daily use, in situation their looks suggest they are build for - get them wet, in and under the water and look at them again in a year. My Steeldive bezel gave up, very stiff, no more audible clicks, nor nice tactical feel, even after it got the oil treatment. I suspect corrosion. That just after a half year. My muffled sounding skx bezel turns the same way after three years, like on the first day. Never turned stiff and never needed extra care and lubrication to keep it turning. Will the other watches perform the same after three years? A next look we could take in 5, 10, 15 years. The 7s26 in the SKX will be still running. No doubts, all these old seiko 5 give a lot of evidence for it. No handwinding translates to less stress on the stem and one point less of potential failure. Your San Martin has a stem issue, you hear from many people reporting stem issues on their steeldive 007. If there is a problem right in the beginning, they are probably out of the race in 5 years. The skx you buy once and it will last for many years to come. With some of its competitors, you might have buy it again because it didn't last very long if you really use it as the tool its promised to be. Desk diving, coming out of the watchbox only for bbq afternoons on sunny sundays or modding on for halloween (no snark remark - your mod is beautiful) - they are for sure some colourful and/or more affordable alternatives.

Great comment kater, longevity is a crucial aspect to owning an object like this. For many, saving a few quid is more important, and others value solid engineering and want to pay for it. If I could keep and wear all these watches all the time, I would definitely do that in the name of deeper understanding and for an even better understanding of their pros and cons. Thanks again.
