I stumbled upon this video, and never heard of this watch before. Last night I can't sleep this thing is spinning on my mind, and this morning I drive to the dealer, and snatch the last piece available. Thank you for your review on this beautiful watch; I never heard of the Land Master until your video. After researching more on the Land Master line, this SLA071 is very similar to the 10th anniversary version (SBDX007 and SBDX009). These 3 models are the only ones in 30 years of production that use the 8L35 movement. The biggest different is the case where the older watch used a mono-block with no case back. SBDX007 was limited to 500 pcs but I don't think it was available in North America. Even back in 2003, the retail price of the SBDX007 was 300,000 yen or around USD 2125. In addition, it seem to hold its value very well after 20 years. With the SLA071 retail price at USD 2600, it definitely a value proposition considering Seiko's price to enjoyment ratio 20 years ago. Anyways, after reading more on this watch and the history of the Land Master line, I decided to pull the trigger. It will be my first watch with SL35 movement.

I have a Seiko Landmaster 10th anniversary, with the 8L35 automatic movement. Only 500 were made as Seiko were more conservative with their limited editions back then. I have had it since new and it is a beautiful watch. If I did not have one, I would buy the SLA071...... 👍👍

I was going to slam it (and suggest a tegimented Sinn U50) until I heard the price; wow that is great for 8L, Titanium Zeratsu. So glad they did not price it like a Prospex SLA017 Limited Edition, and might get me back into a Seiko again because their accuracy/quality has been so off in any with 6R/6L or lower movements. Good review and thanks for giving me something to save for.

Seiko is a brand that worth the value for your money...I am a Seiko fanboy...have nearly 30 Seiko watches( and counting..haha) from seiko 5 to all other models..willard,turtle,samurai, monster, sumo etc..up to Marinemaster 300...love them all..Escapement n Watch videos were among those that influenced me for Seiko world..yeaahh!

I disagree, there are lots more micro brand watches out there that offer far better bang for buck with Seiko movement, ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, solid stainless steel bracelet, all at a fraction of the price of Seiko.

$3,000 for a high quality Seiko isn't bad. That's about what you'd pay for a Tudor or a nice Tissot. That's less than half the price for an Omega Planet Ocean or Rolex Explorer II.

The 8L has gone up about $1,000 in the last 6, 7 years. I remember purchasing the SBDX017 for $1,900 with the 8L and that was after it was hyped up. I think the original purchase price was $1,600.

yep! In general all watch watches have gone up in price. Rolex explorer in 2010 was $5050. Now over $7k new from AD. Heck now a days everything is priced higher, houses, grocery, etc.

That's because stupid MBAs are suggesting established manufacturers to become "fashion brands" instead of value brands. Many western world companies are trending that direction, including car manufacturers. They are detached from reality. But, that has given the opportunity to smaller manufacturers to fill in the gaps and offer unique timepieces at all time best price / value ratios.

I really like the framed date window, but not the handset. The old sbdx009 Landmaster has a monoblock case just like the Marinemaster only differencing in material choice with titanium, and the handset is also similar to mm series

You probably know Seiko approaches to LE last years (e.g. 62MAS 200m MM) - they still produce new and new dial color combinations, instead of finally making good bracelet fitting properly to case (have You seen new released Marinemaster ?! Outrageous). Hope this avoid Landmaster asnd it will be this LE and regular edition.

So you Know. Seiko Has a LandMaster GMT (True/Travelers Independently Adjustable Hr Hand) Full Titanium Bullhead that Uses the 6R64 28,800 VPH Movement that Came Out in 2018. Which Happened to be the 20th (Correction : 25th ) Anniversary of the LandMaster. I Still have Mine, if You're Interested 😉.

You are Correct... I stand Corrected. It was available in two Models , the Gold GMT hand, Seiko Name andAll Blk Bezel, which were Limited to 500 or 600 units? Or the Red GMT hand with the titanium silver Bezel Regular Production version. I chose the Red Version because their was No price difference between the two and I liked the Bezel better. Isn't funny Seiko Rarely Uses that Movement Much? I got it also in two Presage line Watches. The Sharp Edge GMT (Green Dial) and the Ocean Traveler GMT Titanium 39mm. But Using the 8L35 in this Watch, Does allow for a Thinner and overall Smaller Piece.

I have a Seiko ghost King Samurai with the waffle dial and I paid less than 400 for it. It's got the finishing of a 3 thousand dollar watch. 2600 for this is pretty ridiculous despite the titanium and zaratsu polishing and the higher end movement.

4:00 Living near the Arctic circle and being an outdoorsman, I would say it’s more about fitting the watch further up the wrist while wearing heavy cold weather clothing. (Not fitting outside the layers). Firstly, having a bulky watch where it would normally sit, crushes your wrist when you have multiple layers pressing down. There’s less pressure further up, so it’s more comfortable. That’s at least how I use the extension of my Certina diver under heavy clothing. Secondly, you’d never want to wear any watch, no matter the movement, on the outside of a jacket doing activities in Arctic winter conditions. They quite likely won’t take it, or one at least really shouldn’t bet on it, so to say. I’ve experienced it first hand.

The watch has to be Swiss made or they won't even accept it. This happened after Seiko destroyed the Swiss in the chronometer trials in the 60s. After that they decided that only Swiss watches will be certified

hmm usually they state anything out of the norm in spec page. If that is the case then I would say yes this has double ar on it as it is very clear. Maybe super clear coating means both sides for seiko? I'll ask the Seiko rep at kavars next time I see him, he should know the final answer.

I like watches that come with double AR as it takes most of the glare away from the dial giving the impression of no watch crystal. The blue dial on this landmaster is very nice. Seiko are masters of dial design.

when I read your comment my eyes widened as I remembered the trouble I had filming the batman snr as dust would stick to the crystal on the top. Never experienced that before. So that must be the ar coating making the surface not as slippery and my usually cleaning methods were not as effective. for this land master I did have a little bit more of a difficult time then usual so I would go with yes it does. But its not obvious like how longines does it with the crazy blue glow with its double AR coatings. And the seiko SNR033 has the crazy blue glow as well. This land master does not.

It doesn't fit my particular aesthetic preference but certainly a nice watch. I prefer my Seiko Prospex MarineMaster ”Tuna” SBBN033 also with stainless color bezel which to me, kills this watch at 1/2 the price and more accurate Quartz movement. This is all preference of course. One thing that astounds IMHO, is just how many different watches and movements Seiko sells. Seiko is more prolific than any time I can remember. Thanks for the great review.

I think this watch is overpriced and quite ugly IMHO. The SRPH17K1 Prospex Land looks better at a fraction of the price. True it is not Titanium, but that isn't really all that important to me. If I had the money laying around and was forced to buy a watch (I tend to spend my money on experiences and already own a pair of very nice watches) I'd opt for a nice Swiss made watch like an Oris. But I'm glad for my fellow watch nerds who like this watch and want to get it.
