Seiko Sumo SPB103J1 Review - best green dial Sumo ever

So late to the Sumo party, but boy am I happy to finally land the Hulk SPB103J1.
I reckon the Sumo is already among the classic Seiko divers and this forest green dial totally confirms my belief.
The upgrades such as sapphire crystal and 6R35 movement that came in the Gen 3 Sumos are definitely welcomed. I actually prefer the slimmer and more elegant fonts and markers on this.
It's a pity that the Sumo has such as long L2L. If Seiko were to roll out a "Mini Sumo" with 41-42mm case and 48-49mm L2L, fans with smaller wrists will jump for joy.

Same, I bought the 2023 version yesterday based on its appearance, and man it really shines in the sun. My version does not have the chrome border on the date but still looks nice. Very glad I got it on special too.t I think this sumo will become a classic one day too but this is a keeper!

Actually you’re right. I took for granted regarding the alignments on my piece. How could I? 😹 And thanks for the kind words on the fit of this one. It definitely is on the upper limit. I really like the design and colour of this, but the size and heft need some time to get used to.

I think the Sumo is a far superior watch to the Turtle or Samurai in terms of specifications and finish, and the 6r35 calibre is used in even more expensive models such as the SPB147 or SPD239. Only let down is the bracelet.

The bracelet is definitely subpar, but it is also priced lower than the SPB series (Mas, Willard, Baby MM). I still think the Sumo has a place for Seiko fans.

The Sumo represents excellent value. It's better made than the turtle, monster or samurai but for a reasonable premium. The quality and finishing is not far off from the more expensive divers costing USD1K.

I would think the Sumo is slightly higher build quality than the entry Prospex divers. 6R movement and sapphire crystal. What’s not to like? Hoping for a mini version of this.

At this price Seiko should shift to a bracelet with a milled clasp. My Victorinox quartz watches have this feature at approximately half the price!
