As a huge Seiko Fanboy (SKX, Monster, BFK, SSC019, Turtle, Samurai, Tuna) my absolute favorite of them all is the Sumo. I had avoided getting this watch for a very long time due to the negative points so often repeated in discussions: 1. The 20mm bracelet width is too small for a 45mm case. 2. The gap between the springbar and the case is too great when the watch is mounted on an aftermarket strap. 3. Seiko's insistence on Hardlex crystals instead of sapphire. 4. The "bolded font" of the bezel markings. 5. The unfortunate similarity to female anatomy of the 12 o'clock index. But my curiosity got the better of me and I ordered one and I could not be more pleased. What is hard to understand is that all the awkward stuff on the watch (proportions, font, extended lugs) tends to be exaggerated in photos. In the metal, this watch looks absolutely right and I can't explain it any better than that -- that Reese's Peanut Butter Cup shape of the bezel and case nestled into the elegantly arcing sides downwards through the lugs is truly a feast for the eyes. Like Anthony I found that the bracelet was merely adequate, like so many Seiko bracelets are. The magic solution for me was the addition of the Crafter Blue rubber strap -- a match made in heaven for this timepiece. The Sumo fits so nicely due to the curved lugs that even people with wrists smaller than seven inches can still wear it comfortably. As for the Omega, it certainly is a more elegant watch with better specs all around. But it damn well should be at nearly seven times the (street) price. I respect the Omega greatly and would never say the Sumo is a better watch. But the Sumo is a darn good watch. I sense that Seiko is going to abandon the line sooner than later due to their focus on Turtles, Samurais, and 62mas pieces at this price point, so anyone considering one is advised to get one while they are readily available.

I’ve owned the same Omega Anthony has in this video and I now own the Blumo. In all honesty I prefer the Sumo. To me for money spent it’s a better watch. I’ll even go as far as saying it’s a perfect watch . I love my Sumo and would much rather have a Sumo than the Omega 👍🏻

I own both the Omega and the Seiko - and love both. Your review was spot on and pointed out the differences and strengths of each watch. For me - the Sumo is bang for the buck - the better watch. Still - both are fantastic time pieces. I wear my Sumo on the Crafter Blue rubber strap which is a perfect fit and very comfortable.

Good video and comparison. The omega is the nicer watch for everyday wear. It looks better and possibly has a better movement. Also the size at 41 is much more comfortable for every day wear. However, if you truly want a tool watch for diving the sumo is hands down a better watch. Being a diver I can tell you that the hands on the Omega would be very hard to see underwater, whereas the bright white hands on a dark dial on the Sumo are truly functional for what the watch is supposed to do. That being said with the use of dive computers you rarely even need to use a dive watch anymore other than a back up in case your computer goes caput. Out of the two, I would buy the SKX. thanks again.

Anthony, my brother, another great review! Personally, between the two, I like the Omega better. I'm a sucker for a blue dial. Although (I'll probably get some hate for this) I am really partial to the new Commander's Watch. The whole red, white and blue color scheme I find very attractive. I know a lot of the collecting world have poo poo'd it. But I say better for it. That means it won't sell as well and then you would have something special for the collection. I like how you are playing with straps. That one looks good on the Blumo and I really liked what you did with the AVI-8 on the last review. I believe you can change the whole personality of a watch with just the right strap change. Anyway, focus problems aside in the beginning, the production value is great! And as always, I enjoyed the review and your honest opinion very much! Take care, Mark

There are 2 things that I dislike about my Blumo. the overrated hardlex crystal and the braclet. I currently have it out for a replacement sapphire crystal and I installed a Strapcode bracelet to replace the stock one. I had no real issues with the bezel insert, but decided to have a luminous ceramic one installed. Can't wait to get it back.

For me the seiko is too big. My daily watch is a midsize seamaster which I really enjoy, however I just picked up a sarb033 that could dethrown the omega. I was surprised to see it is a 6r15d, so hopefully seiko has fixed whatever issues the previous movements may have had. Anyway, thanks for another great video. I look forward to all of them.

As someone who recently sold his Omega Seamaster and, shortly after, got bitten by the Seiko bug, I can say I prefer the Sumo - over THIS PARTICULAR Omega. After all, watches are things of the heart; functionally, most decent quality watches are comparable regardless of what the 'luxury' crowd would have you believe. However, being objects of irrational passion, I must say, I LOVE the retro Omega Seamaster Coaxial Master. And, though I have several Seikos, the Sumo is not one of them.

I'm not sure what after-market steel bracelet works best for the Sumo. Don't like straight end links, or mesh. I think Seiko had the right design idea, it's just not executed the best. Design is okay, but the polished edge of centre links doing match the polishing on the end links. The way it's done on the end links should've carried through the whole bracelet, and they should've had a milled clasp. Perhaps a NATO would be better than a two piece strap also, as the lug holes are a fair distance from case.

I have to disagree with your assessment of comparability. I love both Seiko and Omega, but the only way Seiko compares favorably with Omega is lume. Seiko’s lume blows away Omega’s. Oddly enough, with all the negative comments about the SMP’s scalloped bezel, I have no problem turning it easily when wet with seawater. In my experience it is very slick when wet with fresh water, but I don’t dive off n fresh water. Yes, I have actually used my 2531.80 ad a dive watch and it excells!

I like an accurate mechanical watch. My 1997 Seamaster (serviced by Omega for the first time last year) now keeps time to within 2-and-a-half seconds a day. If we're talking about a new watch--not some old vintage piece for collecting and for very occasional wear--it's got to be highly accurate or I'm not interested.

Being an owner of the Omega Seamster 300, Omega released the first revision (calibre 2500A) before it was ready. It was very problematic, they addressed it with calibre 2500B, then 2500C and made final improvements with the 2500D. Personally, I'd be pissed to have gotten the A and all the issues that came with it. That is poor form from omega. The 2500D is a rock star though. I average 4.5secs a week with it.

My Omega is a quartz, but I have a Breitling automatic, have had 2 Rolex, a Sub and a GMT - My Seiko Samurai, my Ball Master Engineer II diver and my Zodiac Super Seawolf are my most accurate automatics, blowing both the Breitling and the Sub out of the water, and a little better than the GMT Master was. They also have longer power reserves.

A very thorough comparison and I agree that Seiko's mid-tier movements are soundly outclassed by any Swiss movement. I hope you don't mind that I correct you on the engraving on the back of your Omega. The engraving is not a "seahorse" per se but rather a depiction of a mythical Phoenician/Greek creature called a hippocamp. A seahorse is the english vernacular name for a species of small marine animals in the genus hippocampus. Notwithstanding that while a seahorse is nominally (in latin) a hippocamp, the sea creature engraved on the Seamaster should never be referred to as a seahorse. I'm sure you know all this but the know-it-all in me can't resist pointing it out : ) Glad to see that you've resumed making more regular content. Cheers!

Fromjonno. My Omega Seamaster was a disaster. Leaked from new Omega couln’d fix. Kept erratic time. Glass kept on popping off, also lost the winder and second hand. Then stopped working. Sat in draw for several years. Do I chuck or get repaired? Foolishly decided on former. Cost as much as the Seiko to repair. Very accurate for a year then went haywire. My wife had a gold Omega dresswatch. One day, putting it on, it just “exploded”. Bits went everywhere. Never again.
