I agree about the sapphire crystal, AR coating, and regulation. I'm a Seiko fan as well and I own a Blumo and you NAILED this review. I was looking at a Marine Master 300 but I couldn't make myself pay that much for a watch with a Hardlex crystal. At the $2500+ price point I absolutely expect a sapphire crystal. Although that is a GORGEOUS watch and I think that it could replace my Submariner. The Marine Master needs a ceramic bezel along other upgrades to make it a true competitor, but that's for a later review, hopefully!!! Anyway, the Blumo is a great watch at it's price point but it does have room for improvement and I think you nailed all the highs and lows of this watch. Great review!

I was into watches a long time ago. After smartphones came out and my values changed, I stopped wearing watches and really didnt think to much about them. I came across your video about LOA and since I liked that series you did, I also started watching your watch reviews. I bought a Monster from a deal I saw online and lucked up and got ProSpex. I like to wear it from time to time and I keep it new looking so it is refreshing to put on at those times and is like wearing a "new" watch. Since I have been watching your vids, I have developed a new appreciation for fine timepieces. SO anyway, just wanted to say I enjoy your vids and look forward to more. Cheers.

Love the seiko monster. I have the same one you have. But I've had the sumo for almost as long as I've had the monster and it's a definite notch better. I think it's build is damn near Swiss level. The case, the design and build quality. It's all there. The weakest point is the bracelet. And non-sapphire crystal of course. For whatever reason, the sumo on a bracelet is one of the most comfortable watches I own. It still doesn't make sense to me.

To be honest, I like the looks of the Sumo a lot more than the Monster, but I am just not seeing the value proposition. I don't see 10 hours more of power reserve as a game changer, and without factory regulation the potential accuracy advantage means very little. Like you said, hardlex crystal is not acceptable at that price. Also, I consider the lack of day on a tool watch to be a shortcoming of the 6r movement. This isn't a dress watch. I won't mention the bracelet, after all, this is Seiko, and cheap bracelets are their trademark. I will wait to see the PADI Turtle become more widely available.

Good comment. I think the Sumo & Monster are very different looking watches that one is not necessarily and upgrade. Maybe from the skx007.... I have a Japanese Monster that I changed the hands and face on, and it looks super unique. It's my total beater watch.

The Sumo is a good example of how Seiko's cost-cutting can almost ruin a nice watch, even for a Seiko fan. At that price, it should definitely have sapphire and a machined clasp. Sometimes I suspect the only reason for the 20mm lug width is so they could use a bracelet design that would be interchangeable with other models. There's nothing wrong with Seiko's bracelets in and of themselves - in fact you could even say that they're all pretty well made, despite being cheap - but Seiko's habit of skimping on the bracelet seems particularly egregious when the rest of the watch is of fairly high quality. The SARBs are another example - a nice watch with a cheap bracelet unbefitting of its overall quality. The Sumo case finishing is sharp, the indices are nice, the bezel action feels good. Those details alone make it worthy of an upgraded movement like the 6R15, but I agree that the 6R15 isn't really much of an upgrade over the 4R36 anyway. If it was factory adjusted, even to two positions like a bog standard 2824, then it would be.

I totally agree eduardosuarez but may ask what you're referring too when you say, "bog standard 2824?" Sorry, I'm kinda new to watch collecting. Thanks and thanks J. for another great review!

Love the review! I'm hoping to get one of the PADI versions from a friend sometime in the next six months. I think I'm one of the few that prefers Hardlex to to Sapphire on a dive watch. I'd way rather have a scratch prone, impact resistant crystal underwater than a crystal that is designed with desk divers in mind. I agree on the AR though. Cheers!

"I'd way rather have a scratch prone, impact resistant crystal underwater than a crystal that is designed with desk divers in mind." -- I would like to know the source of the myth that hardlex is more impact resistant than sapphire. I see it repeated in forums sometimes, but I have never seen anyone offer a reliable proof of it.
@HH60gPaveHawk
@HH60gPaveHawk 7 жыл бұрын
mountainhobo it's more impact resistant due to two features, the way the crystalline structure is constructed and the hardness it possesses. Plain mineral glass is very stable from a crystal structure point of view, and, due to the open crystal lattice, can be enhanced with coatings/additives, as in the case of hardlex, that alter the properties as desired, similar to an alloy. Sapphire as a crystal has a great deal of energy in the bonds holding it together, like most hard gemstones. This, coupled with the lattice shape, makes it prone to shattering into very small pieces when struck along a lattice line. Additionally, since it is so hard, it deforms much less (not visibly, obviously, but scratches are a representation of this) and can shatter more easily. Unfortunately I can't give you a source other than suggesting a college course in physical chemistry.
@mountainhobo
@mountainhobo 7 жыл бұрын
Yankee Rider Since you're so kind to suggest a college course in chemistry, could you instead just point me to some reliable testing instead? Otherwise, pardon me, but it's just blowing smoke.

Yankee Rider Again, the same story. Do you have a link to reliable testing? No? Thank you, end of discussion. I am not going to study chemistry to discuss your assertions. I am a sumo owner. SBDC001 with OUT the Prospex X on the dial. I personally do not like the X call out... and it clutters the dial for me. That's why I bought a 2015 used model. I think the black sumo looks great in a suit and can be definitely dressy. It has a great finish and huge wrist presence. It's a great watch but with some flaws. I think the Sapphire vs Hardlex arguments are goofy! Who is really diving in these watches? Sapphire cracks vs hardlex scratching? Really... please post a video of how much force it takes to crack a sapphire crystal. My hardlex was scratched the second I bumped it against a brick wall at my grocery store.... hardlex does scratch and it is not durable. It's cheaper than sapphire... that's why seiko puts it on watches along with cheap ass bracelets. The 6r15 is a great movement and mine runs about 10 sec/day fast... which is no biggie. The crown and stem seemed to wiggle when pulled out to wind. Something seemed flimsy about it. I replaced the stock band with the 20mm endmill from Miltat... a Great upgrade and super comfy bracelet.

J. Anthony, my brother another great review. I've looked at the Bluemo before. But all thing being equal, I like the SRPA21 better. Just the iridescent blue with red highlights on the hands and the Pepsi bezel had me. I agree, if you don't have a Seiko diver, this would be a great watch. Also, I just found out about the new turtle coming with green dial and bezel (SRPB01). Limited to 3500 for world release. The pictures I've see have put that one higher on my list to get! Love the production value! Nice time lapse with the Bluemo. I enjoyed the lighting changes with the lapse. It added a lot of character to the video as a whole. Anyway, I hope all is well after surviving the holidays. And I look forward to your next review!

I have a strapcode bracelet with micro adjustment for my Orient mako II,they do them for so manny seikos that I think they also make them for the Sumo, check them out. congrats on another great video. cheers. p.s. the monster and the sumo can perfect fit on a collection, they can complement each other, now all you need is a marinemaster hahahah

Exactly why I was considering buying one, although I have a Sinn (104 with 200m water resistance), Tudor (Black Bay Blue with 200m water resistance) as well as Panerai (Pam320 and Pam000 both with 300m water resistance) it is hard to bring myself to wear them underwear for snorkelling it general diving, given the cost of these watches. Seiko at $300-500 is another story but at $3000-$7000 is another thing. Seiko Sumo very nice watch for the money. 👍

Nice review, subscribed. I've had a blue sumo for more than a year that I bought used for $350. The used price for these makes them an incredible value. I think the sumo is the sweet spot for seiko, expensive enough to be high quality but cheap enough to use for it's intended purpose without worry. I wear mine on MM300 rubber on a 6.75 wrist it fits nicely. It's meant to wear large.

Bought this watch a few months ago, then it got quite a deep scratch on the hardlex over a minor bump on a thin tin. Almost sold it, didnt have any serious offer, so i bought a ceramic bezel insert and a double dome saphire instead. Now the watch look INCREDIBLE. with a black ceramic insert and a blue dial, it almost looked like a James Cameron deep sea :)

Good review, J. I've been subscribed for a couple months now but haven't commented before. I have a Sumo in black, and get a lot of compliments on it. I work in a NYC steakhouse and have gotten some of those compliments from Rolex and Panerai wearing customers. Others, I've just seen trying to get a better look and figure out what I'm wearing. I agree with you and most everyone else about the bracelet, so I picked up a replacement from Strapcode. Currently, I've got it on a Crafter Blue rubber strap, which also looks great. But I guess I should get it regulated, because my orange monster (2nd gen) is actually more accurate.

Thanks, and what a great way to kick off the new year. The blue is terrific as colours go. The size is great, too, for a bigger wrist. I'm with you on the bracelet and lack of sapphire and AR. I also agree about the lack of regulation from the factory. Seiko's are standard watches here in Australia, and have been for many decades. My concern is that as they raise their prices the company might forget its origins somewhat, asking more but failing to pack in the value with the above mentioned upgrades to crystal, bracelet and movement timing. These Prospex watches are still in the value range, but are creeping up, dollar wise. More has to be given if more cash is asked. Thanks heaps!

I love mine on my 7.5" wrist. However, I waited to get a used one for $350 due to crystal and bracelet. More refined and less toolish look. The crown is about 1mm too long. The 20mm is not really an issue, much to my surprise. Great video.

You said you're getting better accuracy out of the box, I think you misspoke, my 4R36 monster out of the box is -15 s/day, my 6R15 sarb is +40 s/day. This makes sense given what you said about them not regulating the watches. I agree with your other observations, spot on. One more point that may have been worth mentioning is there's no guard on the crown. Nice watch but not enough pluses over the monster for me to consider pulling the trigger on one.

minitwatch, This watch might be big but it is one of my most comfortable watches. I do not have large wrist either but the lugs taper and it has this thing about it that makes it feel like it is suppose to be large. Congratulations. That is a beautiful watch. You're right about Seiko's shortcomings in regard to accuracy and their straps but overall, I feel they focus on the details that matter most in order to deliver products at accessible prices. That being said, I think the accuracy issues have encouraged many seiko owners to be more DIY when it comes to improving accuracy. I, and many seikoist (the community has to come up with a name for seiko freaks) friends of mine regulate all their watches themselves. It also helps that Seiko movements are easy to regulate which is a detail that very few watch channels acknowledge. I know that tutorials on this subject exist but it might be ineresting to see how J. Anthony does it. I notice that you're uploading a lot more videos per month. Are you responding to KZbin's new algorithm that rewards frequency of uploads over quantity of views? What's your take on these changes that KZbin has made? Is it good for content creators or are they forcing you to work harder? I notice that your subscriberships have breached 8.5k. Congrats on that. I think you'll hit 10k in 3 or 4 months.

Thanks Neil, yeah, I'm amazed at how my subscriptions are climbing up. I've just had more stuff I needed to get out for certain people so I will fall back to once a week. I don't fully understand what all KZbin has done as this point. I know a lot of people aren't happy about it. As for regulating, I don't think the watch community would appreciate my way of regulating watches, I'm a bit more rough in how I do it. I'd get a lot of hate mail haha.

Hello J, nice review as usual. Slight criticism, that applies to a lot of your videos: I think it is not relevant to compare quality of timepieces made in different time periods. I love Seiko. I love Rolex. I love watches. But saying a 2016 Monster bracelet is better than a 1989 GMT bracelet is irrelevant to me, its like saying that a 2017 Prius has better dampers than a 1989 Ferrari F40. See my point ? I have a 1974 Speedmaster and a 1974 Seiko Pogue (such a cool piece, u like ?), and while the speedy's bracelet is bad, the one on the pogue is the worst I've ever seen. Rattles, only 2 microadjustments out of 5 work, clasp closes badly... They're both super comfortable, but as far as quality is concerned... So, here goes my point. Keep up the great work, your opinion is refreshing !

Lo Lo Thank you, I do completely get your point. I may slip a bit but I'll try to keep that in mind. All my watches are equal to me and I naturally compare them even though that may make as much sense as comparing my Lexus to my Corvette.

You might also look at a Seiko SBDC 047 Trans Ocean... Sapphire, better bracelet, ceramic bezel.... I know I've been saying forever I'm going to get a Blue Sumo, that Trans Ocean really has my attention....

Personally, I would miss the day complication my Monster has. I do love the Lue face! I have two Seiko’s with Hardlex and have never had one scratch. Every other mineral glass crystal I have had, from other manufacturers, has scratched in the first couple of months. Thus, I believe Seiko’s Hardlex is far superior to other mineral glass crystals. One small correction. A dive watch does not keep track of remaining oxygen. First, diving with oxygen would kill a diver. Second, Air supply is monitored using a pressure gauge tracking how much are is left in the tank. The time is monitored, considering depth, to know how long a diver can stay without getting decompression sickness (the bends). keep up the great work. i love your reviews!

I love the watch, but what you said about sapphire and AR coatings is valid, and comparisons with swiss watches aren't the only ones to be drawn in that price range. Whenever I've paid that for a Citizen I've got both of these features, plus a bracelet that looks and feels like it belongs on a swiss watch worth twice the price. Wouldn't stop me buying this watch, but you're right to point these things out!

Another well done review. Definitely a nice looking watch, but I agree with you 100% about what it lacks at that price range. Sapphire and a regulated movement should be there at that price when it is much more of a direct competitor to the entry Swiss pieces from numerous brands. The bracelet doesn't bother me as much, as most Swiss pieces at that price don't have great bracelets either. I still dislike the X they use on the dial of the Prospex series too.

I have had trouble with the accuracy of my Sumo. At first, it ran about 15 seconds slow a day. I took it to a jeweler and had it regulated to to better accuracy. However, some sort of glitch happened and it began running about 2 mins a day slow!!!!!! I sent it to a Seiko service place here in the states. It cost me over over $200.00 to get serviced! It came back & still ran about 10 - 15 seconds a day slow. So I finally decided to regulate it myself. Now it runs about 10 - 15 seconds a day fast. I'm done, I can live with this! Still love my Sumo, but what a pain! Incidentally, my orange monster second gen runs about 2 seconds a day slow & my PADI Turtle is close to spot on dead accurate daily.

Happy new year Anthony. I too hold off getting the blumo for years. Had the monster but sold it off. It is a great watch but I just cant get into the looks. After I got my turtle I saw one like new used for sale & got the sbdc003(old version of the blumo) for around 330. I must say after seeing the blumo in the flesh cancelled out all the negatives associated. Yes the bracelet can feel ratchety but is quite comfy. For hardlex seiko rarely do sapphire for their professional divers. Even for the $2000++ marinemaster have hardlex. I guess hardlex is more suited for diving due to better shatter resistance.

I've been wearing the Sumo (SBDC031) for 7-8 months or so, and I love it. It's well made, and looks terrific. Classic diver. MSRP may be $600; street price new is about $450. For that price, a Sumo is very hard to beat. I also wear the Gen 3 Monster (SRP637); known to some as the Baby Tuna. It's slightly larger and thicker than a Sumo. It's got an edgier/cooler look. Doesn't have the stupid "teeth" on it, so you can wear it with a suit. Street price, $300. I wear them on NATOs. Several NATOs actually; you can change the look of a watch for $15. These are both great watches, but the Sumo is more expensive for a reason. It has a better movement, much shinier case, and it really is a bit more "stylish".

Incidentally, maybe the Seiko folks use the Hardlex crystals in their Dive watches because they are, as the name implies, harder than sapphire & won't shatter as easy when struck against a rock or coral, etc. Just my 2 cents.

I think the marinemaster has a coated hardlex. But still you can easily upgrade the sumo with sapphire with whatever colored AR coating you want...

For the Seiko Divers (lower end I guess), you almost have to factor in the additional cost of a strap code engineer type bracelet, and say a Yobokies sapphire crystal (cheaper options to be found on fleabay, natch). Makes an SKX007/9 into a $400+ watch, similarly add a couple bills to a Monster or Sumo, imo.

just a note, the sapphire crystal, as i'm sure you know, can shatter with impact while diving which is more of a concern to divers than non-divers. since this is a truly pro diver watch (what it was designed for, not necessarily what people like me use it for...which is normally brewing my coffee) seiko is showing concern for the crystal that is less prone to shattering, which would possibly stop a dive and threaten life, but certainly ruin a watch

I love seiko but there are times when I find that sweet spot of seiko diver is actually this watch in terms of quality vs price. Any higher caliber, one rarely see much increment in quality. Even marinemaster coating thousands is also not regulated (though using grand seiko movement) and also using hardlex and probably not very big improvement in bracelet other than that nice extension. I think another sweet spot is probably the Thai limited silver sumo which has better finished dial and sapphire(?). Oh and also shogun, which can be had for slightly more than sumo. Sbbn tuna is also worth checking even if it is quartz. Just bought sbbn035 to replace my gshock. Can't be happier, especially for sports. Yeah any seiko divers above these sweet spots have a serious diminishing returns and one should seriously look into Swiss stuffs.

Great Watch, although I do like the Monster better. I recently also played with a Prospex SUN019 Kinetic, which felt amazing, and looked pretty cool (tuna can case), these Seiko tunas don't get enough attention. They really are incredibly unique and just feel great in your hands

Good review. I don't agree with your point on the caseback of Rolex watches though. The signed caseback on the Seiko with the iconic tsunami wave looks impressive but on a Rolex I prefer nothing. It is more understated and allows it to be engraved if it the watch is being given as a gift to signify a special occasion.

I prefer the 4R36 mvt over the 6R15.... My SRP659 and SRP777 Turtle are COSC accurate and my 6R15 Alpinist is...well still COSC but not AS accurate as the 4R36 ones. They have all been regulated except the SRP659. That was spot on out of the box. And the winding is more pleasant and smooth,the 6R15 is very rough. I WILL get a Blumo if and when the right 2nd hand one comes along though,but its not one i "NEED" right now That honor goes to the 114060 Sub.

Nice review. I can very much relate to most of the things you mention about this watch. I do believe it gives many upgrades over the monster that make it worth its price, assuming you value the things it offers. And compared to a 3rd gen Monster, they are the same price. The Sumo fits in a place where it has the case finishing and dynamics of higher end watches like Planet Oceans and MM300 for a bargain. I think where the issue lies (if you own a Sarb) is at the price point you begin to compare everything to the Sarb. I know because I have own the Sarb035 before this watch and it because the gold standard for a bargain with all the benefits. The Sarb lets you know what Seiko COULD do for $300 but CHOOSES not to. With this all said, when I bought the Sumo I was looking to own my first Seiko diver because I am a fan of the Seiko fan culture of owning one of their legendary divers. The SKX was cool but lacking for me in the hacking and handwinding. The Monster's styling was a bit much for my taste (though the best bang for buck pre-gen 3). But the Sumo fit me perfectly with its styling seeming to give you something inbetween the Monster and MM300. You could even upgrade to a ratcheting clasp if you wont for the Sumo. Fair review, the Sumo will get a bit of love and hate because it boarders the line of being affordable and pricey.

I get what your saying about sapphire but I would rather have something like Hardlex on a watch like that. It's less likely to crack. Just like with high end metallurgy, you have trade offs. Sapphire is harder than mineral crystals but has less toughness. If you really are going to dive with it, it's hardlex all the way for me.

great video "j" happy new year. I'm glad your liking your blumo..I love mine and had badly wanted to get the padi edition but was sold out before I could pull the trigger. for me it's a step up over both the gen 1 and gen 2 monsters..but the comparison with the gen 3 is a Lil more murky..same movement. same date only..so comes down to size and style preference in my opinion. also congrats for pulling the trigger on that gshock..they are awesome watches with incredible features.. I had nearly purchased the new gulf master quad sensor. .until I stumbled across a review..didn't have much nice to say..mostly regarding some major glitches with movement not working properly. .so at its price point. I'm holding back till casino resolves the issue. but there is always the new frogman to think about. .lol well on my front..you will be happy to hear I flipped my first watches..lol the quartz version of the seamaster professional. .was impulse buy that didn't really speak to me. .also flipped 2 of the vintage omega seamaster. .ended up getting my investment back plus Lil extra. so that payed for the padi marinemaster..so I'm somewhat out of the doghouse..lol plus fact that I bought the wife the tag aquaracer she wanted. in closing hope the new year brings you health, joy and many more watches. warmest always, jc

Sapphire is getting too trendy, and this watch design hails back quite far now, so it's one that I expect to see the more reliable Hardlex on. Tsunami's are embedded on the Japanese collective, it's hardly something you would see on the back of the watch if it weren't.
