"It's a show about Nothing" became the actual pitch to network executives. Hardcore film noir actor Lawrence Tierney played Elaine's father, who was a star in the '40s and '50s, but fell out of favor as being a drinker and difficult on and off the set. At one point he had been 86-ed from every bar in the Hollywood area for fighting. You might remember him from RESERVOIR DOGS (1991), and Tarantino said the entire cast and crew hated his guts by the end of the first week of filming. I'm enjoying how you react to this series! Don't skip ahead - just keep watching and see how the characters develop and plot(s) thicken! They became totally iconic, and once-in-a-lifetime hilarious.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the actor who plays Alton Benes, Elaine's father, was pretty much like his character in real life. He's a very famous character actor, and very gruff and intimidating. And supposedly it wasn't ever entirely clear if he understood the concept of the show or what the joke was supposed to be. So he was just him, and it worked!

@@tremorsfan Correct! Lawrence Tierney apparently used the butcher knife he took from the set to pretend to stab Jerry Seinfeld while imitating the music from the shower scene. Her late father, Gérard Louis-Dreyfus, was a French billionaire who was chairman of the Louis Dreyfus Company. Her whole family is super rich, so it's kind of cool that she decided to do her own thing and become an actress rather than live off the family money.
