SEINFELD is an American sitcom television series created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. It aired on NBC from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998, over nine seasons and 180 episodes. The show stars Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself who is the main protagonist and focuses on his personal life with three of his friends - George Costanza (Jason Alexander), former girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and neighbor across the hall Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). Seinfeld is set mostly in an apartment building in Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City. It has been described as "a show about nothing," often focusing on the minutiae of daily life.
Seinfeld has received awards and nominations in various categories throughout the mid-1990s. It was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993, Golden Globe Award for Best TV-Series (Comedy) in 1994 and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 1995, 1997 and 1998.[132][133][134][135] Apart from these, the show was also nominated for an Emmy award from 1992 to 1998 for Outstanding Comedy series, Golden Globe award from 1994 to 1998 for Best TV-Series (Comedy), and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series from 1995 to 1998.
TV Guide named it the greatest TV show of all time in 2002 and in 2013, the magazine ranked it as the second-greatest TV show. A 2015 The Hollywood Reporter survey of 2,800 actors, producers, directors, and other industry people named Seinfeld as their #5 favorite show. (Wikipedia)
SEINFELD stars Jerry Seinfeld as a stand-up comedian whose life in New York City is made even more chaotic by his quirky group of friends who join him in wrestling with life's most perplexing, yet often trivial questions. Often described as "a show about nothing," Seinfeld mines the humor in life's mundane situations like waiting in line, searching for a lost item, or the trials and tribulations of dating. Co-starring are Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Jerry's ex-girlfriend and current platonic pal, Elaine Benes; Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Jerry's neurotic hard-luck best friend; and Michael Richards as Jerry's eccentric neighbor, Kramer.
STARS:Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, and Jason Alexander as George. (sonypictures.com)

The Jason Alexander interview section is remarkable. He comes across as very informed and open about the show , his career, the request for $1million per show per featured supporting cast, the fact that it may have been detrimental to TV in the long run, and how Jerry came in at the end of the process and told NBC to pay them. He's an extremely likeable human, he's done is homework, and he was able to see the ramifications of the pay raises (good and bad) for the industry. He shows how good his acting was to play bumbling, impulsive, hot headed, and hilarious George.

The reason why 'Seinfeld' was so successful was the 'no hugging, no learning' mantra. The characters never learn from the mistakes they make. The mistakes themselves are character flaw driven. The characters are at once unlikely, but recognisably 'us'. Seinfeld IS the greatest sitcom ever written/performed/screened/remembered.

Jason's comments were extremely accurate, I lived in NYC for over 15 years so I saw first hand what this show was depicting week by week, I remember getting to work early so my co-workers and I could discuss the episode from the night before. It's funny how "Seinfeld" and later "Mad About You" depicted NYC life accurately (outdoor markets, subway system, street vendors etc.) but "Friends" was not handmade it looked and sounded like it was churned through a Network Studio mentality, it had 6 people and could not deliver a quarter of the humor and inventiveness Seinfeld could with ony 4 cast members.

I’m rewatching Seinfeld on Netflix and laughing my ass off as the first time. And boy, as impressed as I am by Michael’s incredible physical comedy, I really think the comedic genius was Jason Alexander’s acting. I think none of the four were so willing to humiliate themselves for a good laugh like he did in portraying George. And when you see this interview you see what am thoughtful and intelligent man he is, millions of miles away from George. I read somewhere he was going to study classical acting in drama school. But a professor told him that with his looks and built, he’ll never play Hamlet, so it’s better if he studied comedy instead. And he did, and look how just incredibly brilliant his George turned out to be, like an evil clown Hamlet.

I just wrapped up the entire series on Netflix as well, and really came away thinking how much of an impact Kramer had on the show. Although the show is named Seinfeld, Jerry feels more like the platform that allows us to have laughs provided by his friends, especially Kramer. I obviously like all 4 but my rewatch now really had me thinking what a big part of the show that character was.

I just turned 40 and have been watching Seinfeld since around 1997. The show has constantly been with me ever since. The episodes aired a week later than in the States (I was in northern Europe), but I always made sure to tune in. I also remember taping a few episodes on VHS 😄 And I later bought all the Season boxes on DVD and continued watching the show through the years. When I moved away from home and left my parents I only had a bed and a tv for the first couple of weeks and the Seinfeld DVDs was what comforted me. that and Stallone's Rambo trilogy. But my mom was oblivious about the show, I don't think she even knew it existed. My dad didn't understand the show at all and changed the station right away if it was on. If he came home and saw me watching it he would always ask me 'how can you like this?" with a bewildered look on his face. The Seinfeld show is such a huge world of endless things to discover. The DVDs brought so many interesting Inside Looks and the episode commentaries were fascinating to me. And KZbin has so many interesting videos, like videos with compilations of recycled actors that you see in the background as extras, the same people walking around in the background in scenes, some of them in 50+ episodes, things I never would have noticed on my own. Or videos editing together all 'Elaine's shoves', or all 'Kramer door scenes', or all the times we heard Larry behind the camera, or that video where someone compiled all the movie references that were on Seinfeld and placed them next to the episodes, all the hours of bloopers, the fact that so many in the Seinfeld cast was on various Star Trek shows (I think it's over thirty actors, maybe even more). I could go on and on..

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is brilliant as Elaine, period! The fact that Charlie Rose and the shows producers gave her so little time to talk and express her thoughts about the show is a grave irony (and injustice) given that he pressed her on her discontent with the sexism at SNL. He also asked if the genius of Elaine’s character should be credited to Jerry Seinfeld. As if she was just a mule. He didn’t ask the others that question. The sexism in this interview is undeniable.

Amazing show, but much of the magic left with Larry. There was simply too much money at stake for the show to have ended after the peak (season 6). Nevertheless, still fair to say no other sitcom touches it. The show actually ran a PERFECT 'bell curve. The middle three years (seasons 4,5,6) were by FAR the peak of the show, pure Gold, straight A's. ALL of the BEST episodes came from those three years. The first 3 years were the build up (grade B) and the last three years were the tail, with (by Seinfeld standards) the worst three seasons. (grade C).

Keep in mind, compared to most tv, a bad season of Sein is better than most. We both know taste is subjective, certainly with humor and there is no "answer", it is just opinion, and everyone has their own. I'm not surprised some ppl prefer the last three eps where the show gets a *little* more "slap-sticky". That has never been my preference. I think the majority opinion would lean towards my style of humor though, as the largest database of Sein opinion agrees and ranks *4 of the Top 5* in the juicy middle three seasons. The one exception is one you mentioned and is Awesome, The Soup Nazi. If you're interested, by voted IMDb public opinion, the top five episodes are: 1)The Contest 2)The Opposite 3)The Soup Nazi 4)The Outing and 5)The Marine Biologist 🙏🏾@@DPMusicStudio

I find that the greatest comedic series have three elements: great writing, great characters, and great humanity. It was certainly all there on Seinfeld. I'm not a television watcher, never mind regular series, but every once in a while, greatness comes along, shows like Mash, Cheers, and Seinfeld are three that have it all in place. GREAT interview, btw. Interesting to see these guys with their comedic guards down just being themselves. Good stuff.

Seinfeld hit that 1000. Every episode is extraordinary. I grew up watching honeymooners, I love Lucy, married to children, Martin, wayans bro etc. and my honest humble opinion…Seinfeld is the greatest television show in the world as to this day. There’s detail in the show that you really have to pay attention to that show you the extent of their creativity. Like in the episode when jerry is trying to buy the Saab from puddy, when jerry calls Elaine to patch things up with puddy if you look in the background you’ll see puddy just sitting there staring at nothin at all.

Jason Alexander’s answer to the question about how the show was different after Larry David left was right on. The stories were broader, more simplistic, while making the characters more cartoon-like. It showed who the real genius to the show was, and that was Larry David.

I recently watched every episode of Seinfeld in order on Netflix and it gave me a good contrast of each season. I think what lacks in the last 2 seasons (without Larry David) is an overall arc or theme as they are true standalone episodes. 1995-96 was the Susan season where George is engaged. 1992-93 was the NBC pitch season for the Jerry show. I will say I think the quality of the show starts to dip in Larry David’s last season 1995-96. I think he knew it and that’s why he got out. Don’t get me wrong as there is not a bad episode of Seinfeld as I enjoyed binging all 9 seasons again. But the show peaked in Season 6.
@michaelharris169
@michaelharris169 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisolivo6591 absolutely agree. Season 6 was the best, and the decline began in Season 7. Like you, I believe Larry David recognized that. The worst episodes are still entertaining, but just not as quality as arguably the best sitcom writing ever, with Seasons 5 and 6. I can’t imagine what it would be like to come up with ideas for 24 episodes each season, and have them be that layered and smart. The man is a genius.
@chrisolivo6591
@chrisolivo6591 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelharris169 Exactly. 24 episodes with 4 different storylines as that’s 100 different ideas for each season. The fact that the show was still that great by season 6 is amazing. Let’s play devils advocate and Larry structures each show with only 2 storylines? Maybe the show stays great for 4-5 more seasons cause it’s not as ambitious?
@michaelharris169
@michaelharris169 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisolivo6591 probably, but then I don’t think it would be considered the best sitcom ever. It would still be up there somewhere, but the fact that it was written as uniquely as it was, and like nothing ever seen before in sitcoms, gives it its special standing. I know we’ve just discussing the writing, but the perfect casting of the regular and supporting cast is a huge part, too.
@chrisolivo6591
@chrisolivo6591 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelharris169 no doubt the supporting cast is probably the biggest strength of the show. There has never been a show with so many iconic characters that only appeared in one episode.
