I've since seen the episode where Jerry rats out George for shoplifting a copy of the book he couldn't return because it had been in the bathroom, to prevent them making an example of his Uncle Leo who was caught stealing. So they could have turned on each other.

I've read a lot of opinions about this over the years, and it seems to me that many people who disliked the finale didn't get what the show was about to begin with. They wanted it to be more like _Cheers_ or _Friends._ I've even seen comments like "Jerry and Elaine should've ended up together".
