these motors are legendary.. from a time when the average guy could fix it.. just got a 9.9 and excited to restore it.

My experience is that most of the time, the slop in the throttle linkage is due to wear of that nylon bearing in which sits that vertical thoothed bearing in which the vert8cal throttle arm is inserted. To further smooth out the throttle movement, you'd ought to lift up the armature plate, clean and grease the surfaces that mate between that plate and the engine block. Old grease caking up there will impair the plate's rotation which, by the way, provides spark advance to the ignition. Regards !

Nice vid. Is there anything special I should know in order to put the magneto back on? I need to remove it, but I'm worried about messing up the ignition timing. TIA

If you motor is a CDI ignition, you run no risk of impacting timing. If you have an early 70’s motor with points, you just need to be careful that you don’t knock them when flywheel is off. Should not be an issue at all.

@@Bigtime_mcalpine thanks for answering. I have the same model you have here. I need to change a worn cam follower roller, and the flywheel is in the way. Also if you don't mind, what's the lower cover nipple for? It't not water discharge? Apparently the water is supposed to discharge from the bottom of the shaft, but mines getting a lot out the exhaust at all speeds

@@patrickstjean7646 yes, the nipple/telltale on bottom cowling for powerhead is for water discharge. The older (pre-1976) models did not have them so there was no way to confirm good water flow beyond looking at mix of water and exhaust coming out the exhaust port. I had one motor that showed little/no water flowing out exhaust port so I drilled a hole in side of water cover to put a telltale in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHbGc2yorq2JbNk

Did actually replace anything or just clean and regrease,?? I have one with lots of slop in the throttle

You know…I ask led myself that same question and I wasn’t sure. I think I did and I think it was the horizontally installed notched piece that the long plastic axle fits into on the motor side (not the tiller side).

wonder if it had jumped a tooth,.

I have the same exact problem on my Evinrude, problem is where can I find a source for those parts?

Marineengine.com should have what you need. It’s amazing that most of these parts are still available when these motors are 40 years old!
