Sejanus (played by Patrick Stewart), commander of the Praetorian Guard, is tricked and presented before the Roman Senate. This is a scene from the BBC legendary series, "I, Claudius."

Pontius Pilate had been appointed governor of Judea by Sejanus and the religious authorities in Jerusalem were aware of this and that Sejanus had fallen from Tiberius's favour as well. This is what they were referring to when they called Pontius out as being no friend of Ceasar, basically threatening him with being denounced in Rome as a Sejanus supporter who released a leader of a rebel movement in Judea.

Stewart seems to make this his signature response. In the production of "Hamlet" with David Tennant as the Prince and Stewart as Claudius, in the final scene when Hamlet hands him the poisoned goblet, Stewart just looks at him, shrugs with that wee smile, and gulps it down. He plays it so you can practically *hear* him think," Oh well, I tried. "

This is honestly kind of a tragedy. Sejanus would've been a better emperor than Caligula, no doubt.
@Timrath7 жыл бұрын
I don't know. While Caligula was mad and cruel to the Senators, he was quite popular with the common people, and the empire was stable under his rule. Sejanus would have a tough time securing everyone's loyalty, being a usurper with no legitimate claim to the throne. His rule would most probably end up like Galba's and Otho's, unless he was a political genius, which he doesn't seem to have been.
@684046 жыл бұрын
But it was Tiberius, not Gaius (Caligula)
@MrAlexkyra5 жыл бұрын
Well anyone was better than Caligula, but don't forget that Caligula only became Emperor because Sejanus had killed off all other remaining men in the Imperial family besides Caligula, Gemellus (who was too young to rule) and Claudius (who was perceived as a cripple and simpleton and ignored). Postumus Aprippa, Castor, Drusus or Nero (son of Germanicus) might have made decent Emperors and at least would have been better than Caligula. And these were just the deaths that Sejanus was responsible for. Sejanus got what he deserved.

Tiberius after 31 AD was a lot more ruthless than Caligula who was extremely depraved and insane but actually wanted to move to Egypt after a disastrous trip to Germania and rumors of multiple conspiracies on his life. Tiberius' purge after 31 AD was an age of pure terror, with dozens being executed every week, guilty or not.
@DJ-ct6so2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. At least Caligula could use insanity as an excuse. The ageing, jaded Tiberius became a total monster. Many of the treason trials were allegedly a complete sham, as wealthy senators were found guilty of ludicrous 'crimes', and they and their families were executed just so that Tiberius could lay claim to their estates. And then of course there were the supposed atrocities that he subjected young children to, during his last years on Capri.
@tiberiuscave46172 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, Tiberius was apparently reluctant toward confiscation - the proofs are not consistent. Only three cases are explicitly recorded: the fortunes of C. Silius, of Sejanus and the mines of Sex. Marius. Still, it does not seem, as per Cassius Dio, that the value of the properties themselves prompted legal actions under Tiberius. After all, he had always displayed a frugal lifestyle, and he was not in shortage of money.
