Something that should be mentioned: you can combo Sabimaru with the Flame Vent and the Living Force skill, applying both Poison and Burn status effects at the same time. To do it, just coat your blade in fire with Living Force (Flame Vent, R2 then R1), then proceed to use the Sabimaru combo.

The clouds from the Lazulite Sabimaru shouldn't be underestimated. The lingering cloud will still give extra poison ticks to poison your enemy, allowing you to poison an enemy without touching them. This is useful in that, if you start swinging before you're actually in range, the cloud gives you a bit extra range. Also if you get fully interrupted, and your opponent stays within the cloud's hitbox, then it is likely that they will be poisoned. This gives you a chance to still poison your enemy, should you run out of spirit emblems before you poison them with swings. It truly shines in the Fountainhead Palace, allowing you to directly engage large groups of Okami women, which you may then use the flamethrower from Okinaga's Flamethrower to burn them to a crisp while they cough and hack at being poisoned(or you can perform the Mortal Draw and slay them outright).

I watched this video before, great coverage and effort and thanks for that. I came again now to note that the poison cloud of the Sabimaru's last upgrade can indeed poison enemies by itself, and it was very useful to me. This was against the Okami warriors in the fountainhead palace. You can notice that they get poisoned easily by the Sabimaru (1 or 2 hits), by hitting 1 of the 2 or many warriors facing you, and with good positioning the poison mist will poison the others.

I just learned yesterday that if you use bestowal on a chameleon with a stealth attack, rather than getting a blood boost, your sword gains a poison buff. I don't know if it's comparable to sabimaru, and I'm not sure what happens if you try it on the white ones in fountainhead. If you want to test it for yourself, there are some easy lizards near the shichimen warrior that gives you the ceremonial tanto, and there are some easy ones near the centipede.

You could add that while enemies are poisoned, their posture does not recover, combining this with the vitality damage itself makes the poison very valuable in certain boss fights. I found it really useful against snakes eyes. Also, it appears to me that direct hits apply more poison built-up compared to hits to the enemy's guard when using the piercing sabimaru.

@@nwogeistmagier9425 Kind of very late, but Isshin continuously blocks and deflects attacks, and the Piercing/Lazulite Sabimaru is able to apply a bit of Poison Effect despite the attacks being blocked. Combine it with the Flame Vent Living Force combo and you would be able to wipe away a chunk of Isshin's Health and Posture with the proper opening.

B D Yup I wiped on snake eyes (gun fort) at least 30 times. Farmed a bit to get the 2nd Sabimaru upgrade and I took that fucker down 1st try lol. Love this game. Nothing feels unfair, you just need to wise up in regards to which prosthetics counter particular (mini) bosses

A fire vent that *doesn't* inflict burn, a sabimaru that inflicts poison in the most useless ways, *doesn't* pierce and *doesn't* harm ghosts, a shuriken that does slightly more vitality damage i guess and, again, *doesn't* harm ghosts even though it's lazulite, and an axe that... ok i think the axe may be alright, though it's the only one of these four that i don't use unless the enemy specifically has a shield so i guess you're right, they are disappointing. **Edit** the axe is great against illusions like lady butterfly's or the corrupted monk illusion too, forgot about that, though again it's useless against apparitions.

For people having trouble with the Snake Eyes mini bosses or O’rin here’s a combo you can use to destroy their posture bar - you will need either improved or piercing versions of the Sabimaru AND the Praying Strikes - Exorcism ninjutsu equipped: R2x5 -> R1 -> R2x6 -> R1 -> R1 -> R1+L1 -> R1 -> R1 Here’s the technical explanation - use the Sabimaru extended combo, as it staggers them once poison procs and they will continue to block afterwards while the poison reduces vitality and fills posture gauge. The two R1 attacks are just to get in some extra posture/vitality damage and interrupt light attacks that may come your way, at the same time reducing vulnerability from the end of the extended combo. Then the Praying Strikes - Exorcism will definitely be blocked, but it will also deal major posture damage and put them right near the posture break. They WILL attack once your combo ends, so be prepared to block or dodge afterwards.

@@roohni2226 Using it with the dashing attack, instead of releasing the wind with R2 can put the wind effect on your sword, like with the flame vent. While the effect is active, each attack turns the enemy around, which pretty much stun locks him. I haven't tried it on Ishin, but it seemed surprisingly useful against one tougher red armor enemy that stays close to the first headless location (he looks basically the same as the other red armor dudes, but he is stronger and immune to the stealth effect of the fan).

Hey, I just want to point out something that you missed: When pressing R1 during the R2 chain, you can hold left/right to move Wolf behind the enemy, or keep holding forward to make Wolf dash forward to chase the enemy. Furthermore, if you attack an enemy *from behind* while they're still *guarding from the front,* you will actually *get past their guard and attack vitality directly!* (That last bit is something I haven't tested extensively, but it's probably worth a shot, huh?)

The poison clouds are misleading. They don't actually slowly build up poison nor do you have to have enemies inside it. It does instant poison build up and should be thought of as longer range upgrade. Roughly adds 50% more poison compared to piercing sabimaru but does less damage and cannot pierce.

With improved Sabimaru you can actually sneak in an extra R2 swing by subbing an R1 on an ODD hit in the combo. For example, the most cost effective combo is R2, R2, R1, R2 cost = 1 spirt emblem for a 4 hit combo! if you have fang and blade you can end the combo with another R1 to extend into a 5 hit combo. This R1 also has the I-frame properties of the Improve Sabi R1. Finally, you can extend the combo into four more R2s directly after the "free" R2, and finish off with fang and blade for a 9 hit combo for 3 spirt emblems; R2 R2, R1 R2, R2 R2 R2 R2, R1 This works because Sabi's cost is only taxed during odd numbered R2s in the chain, and since the Improved Sabi R1s are considered a part of the combo chain, it lets you extend into an even numbered R2. Better yet, since you didn't pay for the R2, the game doesn't count it toward the 6 R2 limit, so it's literally a FREE 7th Sabi swing!

This is probably the hardest tool to use effectively, hence why a lot of people thinks it sucks. It's not like the flame vent, which has a very basic premise - "hit them with the fire" job's done. It requires more effort and personally it's become one of my favorites after I began figuring out how to use it properly. The poison is just a bonus, not the actual goal. The real benefit is to be able to stay the aggressor without being blocked.

@@yvesgomes The fan is good for farming and makes some enemies very trivial, however I'm not really a big fan of it. It's pretty boring to use. I think the Sabimaru is pretty well balanced, in terms of cost, but it would be a little more fun if it was cheaper. Cost efficiency all depends on the enemy you're fighting. For instance, with the warrior enemies in Fountainhead Palace, the Sabimaru is probably the most cost efficient weapon available due to their great weakness against poison, but with the ogre type enemies, that attack with a big club or bell and have a big healthpool and posture, the fan is probably the most cost efficient since you can instantkill them.

Does the lazulite upgrade allow for multiple exposure ticks on enemies in the cloud? Similar to how spending time in a poison cloud continuously builds your poison bar? Even against a single enemy, it sounds like the lazulite upgrade would allow for more consistent poisonings if that is true.

Yeah, it does. If the enemies are standing close enough together, you can catch multiple targets in the cloud, and they'll all become poisoned. It absolutely poisons enemies the most consistently out of all versions. Much better than the tiny amount of chip damage you get from the piercing version imo.

Hey, I understand you did this from the perspective of the damage of the tool itself...but what I am curious about is efficiency of causing poison and how this effects enemies who are weak to it. I mostly use the lazurite sabimaru because it seems to cause poison faster(maybe because it is coming from two sources?) But I have seen many believe as you do that piercing is the better version. I can't really come to co clusion yet and was curious if you noticed anything that tips this one way or the other.

It's likely that the Lazulite Sabimaru will set Poison faster in many cases, but you will not get the Vitality Damage through the block while attacking that you will get with the Piercing. You're trading faster Poison build up for pure damage. This is why I think the Piercing is better, because you don't only want to set Poison with your attacks, you want to deal damage as well.

I can’t believe someone actually took the time to post this. THANK YOU! I have it upgraded to PEIRCING.. But I didn’t know what it was for. I know each weapon has a purpose. Like the fan, the Lilac version is perfect for HEADLESS and the SHAMAN guy. I took out the SHAMAN to get the dagger without ANY confetti whatsoever! Only used Lilac fan. Currently, I’m stuck on TRUE corrupted Monk, mostly due to the patch. I can kill him in a straight fight... but 3 times??? Cmon. Really? They took out the first two death blows in the patch not 2 days ago. I was 8 hours behind because I was sleeping. I keep letting my PS4 update due to hoping they put in an easier version so the bosses are not tanks that do 2 hit kills on you. Anyway, my curiosity for why I needed this was always on my mind. But you took the time to explain it and know that it’s HIGHLY appreciated.

The Monk is highly skill based. Be proactive about getting hits in without worrying about damage. He has a lot of consecutive attack strings, sweeps, and thrusts that you can abuse to get early kills in at the 1/3 HP mark (just not the retreating sweep). For the multi swing in third phase, it's important to note that the parry timing is one-two one-two one one one. If you parry the last hit, you usually have positional advantage to be able to get a free swing on him before he does his next attack.

The game would have been long enough even if it didn't have so many side missions in rehashed locations. Besides the blatant padding, those missions ended up just making the game too long for its enemy variety, which led it to feel like it lacked the variety, even though the amount of types of enemies was pretty decent for a first installment. My main wish for Nioh 2 is that they don't pad too much. Next wishes would be better soundtrack for bosses and fewer bosses that lack poise.

it's a shame sabimaru's last upgrade is just a downgrade from the piercing version. Wish it kept the same effects as the piercing on top of having smoke released.

@@prestongreenbay6336 Lazlulite upgrades. Others don't necessary need to be the best. Like the axe? Lazlulite axe? Nobody uses it because it costs more but doesn't do better against normal enemy, only a few specific. Lazlulite flamethrower removed the flame effect so literally no one uses it. Lazlulite sabimaru that you know why no one uses. Only the lazlulite shuriken has any use since it's actually just a straight up better version of a normal shuriken

Why people are saying the lazulite are downgrades from previous versions of tools? Make no sense.. I just upgrade axe as my first lazuli and it seems to deal the same posture dmg than the fire axe.

The jump buttom help a lot in that figth, i think Owl Father is easier than the normal version, but if a tool you are looking for, i recomend the feather, i cant remenber the name but is the one that do some fire damage... in example he trow a shuriken follow with a fast and strong slash attack, just block the shuriken and use the feather for the sword attack, you'll advoid the attack and do some damage in the process, and more important you'll look cool in the process >_

Firecrackers don’t do much against him. For everything except DOH oil+fire vent+living force is by far the best prosthetic use. So much fire damage and stun it out damages others by a ludicrous amount

I run Lazulite Shuriken to snipe his jump attacks and at range, and use the invincibility frames off Lazulite Axe to deal heavy vit and posture damage as he recovers from heavy swings.

The only considerable use I made of it was to get past the Snake God in the cave, without needing to convert the monkey. I suppose it could also be useful for fighting headless spirits, before you you get the Lilac Umbrella, if you really wanna kill them early (which I tried and don't recommend). I also slightly use it in the miniboss on late (on fire) Ashina Reservoir, because you got essentially two minibosses ganking you in a place surrounded by fire. So, this tool allows you to escape a bad location, if you need. I still think it should cost only one Emblem, not two; and/or maybe recover posture, too.

The piercing Sabimaru is the best version? "Extremely powerful" piercing effect? No reason to use the Lazulite version? Yeah, I don't know about all that. In my experience, the Lazulite Sabimaru was the only version that wasn't completely ineffective, and worked as advertised, i.e. it actually poisoned enemies. The only time I managed to poison someone with anything less was exactly once against Snake Eyes Shirafuji, and that's only because she's especially weak to it. Agaist every other enemy, even other Okami warriors, nope. The chip damage you get from the piercing version is also so pitiful, it might as well not even matter. I have no idea what version of the game you're playing, but I've got to call out misinformation when I see it.
