On our last day in Sekiu, we decided to run out to Neah Bay for our last hour of fishing to see if we could pop a big king. We had already lost 4 quality fish at this point in the day, so when I hooked up with this fish I was pretty anxious about battling it the right way and getting it on the boat.

When my dad was still alive and had a place at Port Renfrew ,we would be fishing and we would always hear "Neah Bay ,this is King Salmon" my dad and me would always laugh .....now I know where this place is... Thanks

Awesome fish! Hatchery to boot!! Man, those braid-to-mono knots can be stroke inducing! that said I've yet to have one fail (have had some swivels break on me though. Even the expensive ones). Great video! My two cents is the commentary and conversation I think is what makes a good video and this had plenty of it. Subscribed!

My life . Twenty trips to Alaska. One year I took my Grady White up the inside passage from Port Hardy and fished every day. 100 Kings alone on that trip. My biggest was in Sitka at 57. Outside rivers inlet I caught ten over fifty. Not a fish story. Fishing with downriggers made huge difference. Beautiful fish.

Pacific Northwest Best Life I was fortunate. Lost an eye in an accident. I just left trailing my boat all way to Port Hardy BC. I found a local guy ( ran local fish hatchery on Vancouver island) who taught me how to Salmon fish on my boat. I then spent the next 3 months alone fishing up the coast. Think of it near blind guy trailer a 30ft boat 2500 miles. Then go out north either live on boat or rented rooms in fishing villages. Lucky man to be able to do it.

Strong work. Getting ready to rig the new boat. What model Scotty’s are those and do you use braided line? I also noticed you had the kicker running for a short period? Thanks
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks! I use the Scotty 1106's, here's a link to them: amzn.to/2Z3i5CV I use cable...I have a longer dissertation on braid vs cable here: pnwbestlife.com/puget-sound-salmon-fishing/ I like to keep the kicker motor in gear until the fish is like running away from me...The most common way to lose kings (and we lost several this way on the trip), is when they run at you. 11" flashers, barbless hooks, a motor out of gear when they run at you, makes it difficult.
@SolarBurrito
@SolarBurrito 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I noticed the kicker is off at the start. I always keep mine in gear otherwise fish get off.
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife 3 жыл бұрын
I generally leave it in gear as well unless the fish is solidly hooked with no slack. When a fish is running I’m not as worried about it

Burning line out!!!!!!!! What Okuma Rod is that ??? I need a new downrigger rod.. do you like it ?
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife 4 жыл бұрын
This is the Okuma SST-C-1062-MH (amzn.to/3e5hJjI). I write about the gear I use in this article: pnwbestlife.com/puget-sound-salmon-fishing/. I really like these rods. They've been stepped on, bent nearly in half, and they are cheap. They have great sensitivity to see the shaker, and power to fight a big fish.

Gorgeous fish! Why do you use braid and mono while trolling?
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! There are two aspects to braid that are super advantageous: 1. Line diameter which means I can get more of it on the spool 2. Stiffness - mono has a lot of give to it and with downrigger trolling there is already a lot of slack line in the water when a release is tripped I like the flouro top shot because of the stiffness, invisibility, and the larger line diameter makes it easier to work with in the downrigger release The FG knot keep em together
@speedbird1598
@speedbird1598 3 жыл бұрын
@@PNWBestLife ive been told that stretch is the reason to use mono instead of braid. Do you find not having stretch reduces pop offs?
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I still run both setups and I don’t notice a difference in pop offs between mono and braid. I think I can reel out slack and get a good hook set faster with braid
