I think my Christmas wine is usually sparkling, because I live in South America and the end of the year here is HOT. So, sparkling wines usually hit the spot nicely, especially in the evening, when the temperature still hasn't dropped. I had a brief flash of terror when Konstantin suggested sitting in front of the fireplace during Christmas 😅 As for Adventskalendar, I grew up with those, but that's because both of my parents are part-German. My mother had to sew a couple for me and my sister, as they weren't known around here. At some point, though, the custom gained traction all over the country, but I think it's declined a lot in these past few years, to the point that I don't see them in supermarkets anymore. So, in short, Advent Calendars aren't well-known in my country.

Love this video!!! It really helps to think deductively as you explain your tasting before revealing. One of the best videos! Love Barolos and Rioja for the holidays :) The Bolgheri Tuscans and Bordeaux are so challenging to distinguish- though there’s a hint of “flair” with the Sangiovese blends.

Hey Konstantin! I think you just hit on why I cellar my wine. It is to survive Christmas with the relatives. Our survival strategy, year in year out, is to celebrate Christmas with all the friends first then you are on such an emotional high, you can face the family. But seriously, many new collectors could easily get on board if they know they are collecting for Christmas. Of course, we all know that for some, it will become a chase for the perfect bottle for many future Christmases, but for now you have set an achievable goal and had a lot of fun into the bargain. Cheers!

Thank you for the recommendations. Please continue to put out the nuances that make a wine particular to that region. Also continue to provide food recommendations for each wine that you taste. Doing both will definitely help us understand the wine and encourage us to try out the wine and try it out with the foods that you recommend.

Ciao Konstantin and Merry Christmas. Thanks a lot for your videos. they are informative, with easy to understand and entertaining wine terms. To start the Christmas lunch a bubble is basic (I love mountain ones like Trento Doc), then we move on to a wine with Nebbiolo (Barolo but also a Ghemme or a Sfursat) and to close a glass of Moscato d'asti with panettone

Christmas calendars are very much a thing in the United States. Usually they are called advent calendars. Grocery stores sell ones with a chocolate for each day from Dec 1 to Dec 24. They also sell beer and wine calendars for adults. In my family it’s tradition to make one with 25 interlocking paper rings numbered 1-25. We hang it in the kitchen and tear off the numbers until only number 25 is left. I wonder if people in other countries do this?

Amarone della Valpolicella is weirdly popular over Christmas in Denmark as well, and I am a little confused as to why (not that it is bad or anything, I just don’t see the connection)

@@arispagoropoulos3798 I agree to an extent, but it is an attempt to match some of the sweetness in the brown potatoes and in the duck, as well as having a high alcohol percentage to cut through all the fattiness

Hey Konstantin, I wonder would this be a good idea for a wine video: Wine scandals or biggest wine scandals (i.e. wineries mixing lower quality grapes, messing with wine with artificial chemicals like the Austrian wine scandal and so on)? I think this could be a controversial but informative topic from a person who knows a lot more than the "average Joe" about wine. It could also give insight into the thing itself. Why did wineries decide to "edit" wines with illegal methods? Was it caused by the "parkerization" or "scoreficiation" of wines in the late 20th and the 21st centuries and wanting just better reviews from wine critics and peers?

I really like the Nino Negri Sfursat Carlo Negri. From Valtellina but not a light wine. Same production method as Amarone which brings quite some concentration, however made from Nebbiolo. In view of this, way more acidity than Amarone making it easier to use with food. Its also relatively cheap (26€) compared to a good Amarone.

i've only heard of wine from Valtellina.. I think Lombardy? Yes same method as Amarone! way cool the same grape as nebbiollo but they call it something diff in this region.

Great tasting! The turkey gets lost on my Christmas plate among the sausages wrapped in bacon, sage and onion stuffing, bread and bacon stuffing, ham, parmesan parsnips and a rich gravy. Great video--fun and educational. BTW, I had a Valmur Grand Cru Chablis over the weekend that was sublime. It might be nice to do a video tasting several Chablis of different levels of quality. Chablis is one of the few (if not the only) wines from Burgundy that you can still buy the highest level of quality for under $100. This Grand Cru Chablis was $80. If there is a better example of Chardonnay out there, I don't know it. I generally prefer red wine, but Grand Cru Chablis and good champagne are among my favorites also.

Hi Konstantin, Would be really cool if you could do a holiday wine buying guide, perhaps on three different budgets: 25, >100. Thanks in advance!
@martinhansen88553 жыл бұрын
Were you select 3 or 4 different bottles within every budget range, and tell why they pair well with the food (traditional Christmas dinner like duck/goose and fatty foods) and how the wines compliment each other. And of course maybe you could reveal your own selection of wines for the holiday dinner. Personally I'm thinking about buying three bottles of red wine on a >25 euro budget per bottle, since the rest of my family prefer red whine only. So I'm heading in the direction of: 1. A burgundy from northern Cote de Nuits that is fresh and has some acidity, perhaps Le chapitre from Dom. Jean Founier. (35 €) 2. A northern rhone that brings a little extra structure than #1, but still fresh, vibrant and acidic. For example Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre from Yann Chave (38€) 3. A red Rioja with some aging, maybe a Viña Tondonia Reserva 2008
