reason for dL = + 1 or - 1, d S =0 is a photon only has two intrinsic quantum numbers, that is, the photon's spin angular momentum 1 or -1 (Raman's discovery) when wave function Y( L =1) transitions to Y( L =0), where does the angular momentum go? it is carried away by a photon to conserve L, (dL/d t =0) even if e-'s spin wants to flip, but a photon doesnt have any more quantum number to accommdate. therefore a photon only sees an electric dipole field of an atom in general.

Question: What is dipole selections rules then? And how does it connect to transision dipole moment. When we talk about spin-transition, is a transition between two electronic transisition possible - I don't think so, but not sure. Can you make a video, where you explaine the vertical excitation energy, including why the frequency for absorption is larger then frequency energy for emission? And whay is meant by exication energy. Thanks for this video. This helped a lot.

@AKLECTURES

mathematics of quantum mechanics...long and tedious calculations showed physicists that certain transitions are highly unlikely and to help us determine which ones are likely and which ones are not, physicists came up with these rules to help us keep things straight. so in a way, these rules were born from the minds of some very intelligent people to help explain how nature works :-) ..

Edsson L. Hi, I edited the comment above. If you are looking for a mathematical explanation of why they decided on these transitions rules, you can probably find that information online. I should warn you though, you'll need a strong background in math :) I do not know any reference books off the top of my head, sorry.

#AK LECTURES I don't understand why is at the drawing 2s: n=2,l=0 and ml=0, why is l=0 ? Shouldn't that be l=1 because of the rule l=n-1?
@chaymaebelarbi4898
@chaymaebelarbi4898 6 жыл бұрын
I think that there’s a mistake over there ! 2s: n=1 (not 2 !!) so as you said Lirim l=n-1 which gives l=0
@learngermanwithvanessa
@learngermanwithvanessa Жыл бұрын
@@chaymaebelarbi4898no, n=2 is correct because of the 2 in front of s, hence 2s. s is here the name of the shell with angular momentum L = 0 corresponds to shell s, angular momentum L=1 corresponds to shell p, and so on.

The problem with all these lectures is that no one tries to explain why selection rules are so . To derive these through mathematical equations is very easy but no one ever tries to explain physically, why there should be change in orbital quantum number by one only and not zero or more than one.
@earlspencer7863
@earlspencer7863 4 жыл бұрын
There can be it's just that they are very low probability or require more complex interactions with electric or magnetic fields. As far as what happens physically, it's probably related to conservation of energy and momentum. Just as only discrete orbitals are allowed, energy added will produce certain transitions more than others. It may be analogous to adding energy to a vibrating string. The string will produce a standing wave of a certain frequency but it's possible that other frequencies may be generated with the same energy input.
