When Selena was alive and at the top of her career I'm pretty sure that she didn't have in mind to only inspire one ethnicity but to be a woman that anyone and everyone could be inspired by not just Mexican/American women only. I think fans are sensitive to the Selena topic because in her era being Mexican and trying to make it in the music industry and Hollywood was extremely hard because 'white' people won't (and really, still aren't) accepting of Mexicans. Actually she was trying to get into both. She is American. But she has Mexican roots. She wanted to be liked by both Americans and Mexicans. I am Mexican American, and I can honestly say I was shocked to hear you listened to her music growing up. I did think tho "how, you don't speak Spanish, right?" But then i realized that this is how far our Selena got, she broke the boarders and had everyone loving her. Sadly, some only new who she was after she died, and thats ok too because look at what she has accomplished even 20 years after her death. I remember i was like 8 when she died and my sister and I cried and cried because she was our idol, pero it's obvious que Selena todavía VIVE ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Great job Carli.

Roxana Dominguez you don't have to speak the language to enjoy the music. My husband is bilingual. We are having a baby. We want her to be bilingual. Our plan is for him to speak to her in Spanish and I speak to her in English. I most likely will not understand her when she speaks Spanish but I will enjoy listening to my child talk regardless if it's English or Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language. I am 35 and enjoyed Selena since jr high or high school. No I can not understand most of what she's singing in Spanish. But I enjoyed her songs nonetheless. The beat, the sound, her voice. Selena herself said in interviews that it brought her overwhelming happiness to see non-Latinos listening to her music and especially seeing the younger generation who barley speak Spanish start wanting to learn Spanish and about the Latin culture because of her. She was very open and welcoming to every gender, every race, every sexual orientation what ever the case may be to come together as a community and inspire and help each other out. Selena literally was criticized like crazy and experienced so much racism for her big lips, big hair and big booty. She had to struggle to be seen and taken seriously in the United States even though she was an American herself!!! The . White Americans treated her like a foreigner , even though she was not a Mexican based on technicalities she had Mexican heritage . Even after her death she was people were mad that she was covered on the news so long . So to have her legacy be diminished just because Mac wanted to send these youtubers pr packages just for a little money and attention is exactly why people are annoyed . They don't want to see the race and person that started the culture but they want to give to white woman because it looks more beautiful to them . There should not be any negative comments about race. The fact that a non-Latina creates a look inspired by Selena demonstrates the positive impact Selena had on the world and will for years and years to come. If you think Selena would be offended by a white girl doing a tribute to her you know nothing about what Selena stood for. Selena loved her fans. Her fans were the most important thing to her and she would be proud of the people, of all races and sexes, that are representing her and keeping her memory alive. I don't think it's appropriation but honestly you can't tell people what to get upset at if you're not the particular race that it offends. Cultural appropriation is a weird subject and honestly i think most of the time people are cultural APPRECIATING. Like carli probably is just appreciating selena. Not like she painted her skin or like she's wearing a sombrero (Selena was Mexican). She's literally doing her makeup and her hair to look like selena's, nothing drastic. There's a difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation. Cultural appropriation is when you take something from another person's culture and using it as a fashion statement, accessory, prop or costume without understanding the cultural significance behind it. Cultural appreciation would you actually understand the culture and traditions behind these things. In this case what Carli is doing isn't appropriation since it's just regular hair, makeup and outfit. Appropriation would be her wearing a sombrero and a mustache and saying she's Mexican. When people of color tell you what you're doing is cultural appropriation and instead of telling them they're too sensitive or emotional or they get offended by anything you listen to what they have to say. Because people of color get mocked for these things and that it's frustrating when someone else would take something from their culture and get praised for it.
