Now this is actually something I thought of and experimented with a metal halide a few months ago, although as it was a failure due to the halogen taking too much power and not allowing the metal halide to get brighter, I was going to use a lower wattage halogen, but never really got that far. After spotting this video I realised that yet another idea I've thought up is already in existence, story of my life haha, but interesting enough to make me want to revisit the experiment sometime in the not too distant future. Thanks for sharing, I thought I was subscribed to you already...

If anything, you'll want a higher wattage halogen lamp in series, as a lamp with higher wattage will allow a higher current to pass through. I guess for an 80w MV lamp, perhaps a 100W or 150W Halogen lamp might do the trick.

This is true, I actually own one of these dual halogen and halide lamps now. Yet to do experiments with to replicate it with two separate lamps though.

These are listed on ebay as halide and even says so on the box but they are not. Just pure mercury vapour.

Thanks for the upload. I always wondered how it may look like. I know these bulbs. In Germany we call them "Mischlicht Birne", means "mixed light bulb".

Naja, sagen wirs mal so: Es heißt Mischlichtlampe. Means Tungsten Mercury Lamp

Nice bulb. never saw a bulb like that before. Noticed finger prints on the mercury bulb to the left.

Very interesting bulb. Appears that it takes a long time to fire up.

What's the power rapport for both bulbs? Also, does it matter which wire the halogen light bulb is connected? I want to use a halogen bulb intead of a ballast.

i have a clear 160 watt self ballasted mercury lamp its really awesome

I've not really played with discharge lamps like that but I always thought they needed an igniter to get them started. Is this still the case with the self ballasted lamp?
@FrontSideBus10 жыл бұрын
Not always. The old mercury vapour and some types of metal halide lamps have an auxiliary starting electrode at one end to facilitate starting. Also some high-pressure sodium lamps have internal starters but they are less common these days.

+FrontSideBus Where do you find this lamp 0:20 ? . Im looking after it, but cant find anything

Electroimpex Clear mercury lamps are extremely rare these days, In the UK anyway.

Voltage? Got one of these but rated for 230v and we have 110v in us. Won't even glow for me. Any ideas on how I can use it here?
@FrontSideBus6 жыл бұрын
Greg Lada Don’t you guys get 240v between phases for washing machines etc? Either that or use a step up transformer.
@greglada42186 жыл бұрын
FrontSideBus indeed we do. I will wire it up for that thank you.

Do you know of any true self ballasted Metal halide lamps available? the spectrum of mercury vapor is very different and I'm trying to find a true self ballasted metal halide! Thanks

beautiful, but luminous flux on watt is ridiculous. i estimate luminous flux from that 400W self ballasted lamp somewhere around 6-7000lm.
@Origoangelohrol3228 жыл бұрын
The Ebay seller claims 24000 lumens for the 400W version, but it can be wrong as the lamp type itself. It's normal the efficiency of these lamps to be somewhere between that of a mercury-vapour with a choke and a tungsten-filament bulb. Somewhere between 10 and 60 lumens per watt so your guess about 6 -7000lm sounds absolutely right.
