Ever wonder how to disarm a thug holding a gun to your belly? This particular gun disarming technique is not a typical "take the bad guy to the ground and take his gun out of his hand" technique. This technique is devastating.
In this scenario, imagine you are being abducted; you've been stopped and have a gun shoved into your belly (muzzle in the belly, palm up) and directed to move toward a nearby vehicle to be taken to an unknown location. The abductee, of course, does not want to go and initiates a technique to cause maximum damage to the kidnapper, specifically his arm and shoulder, which is done with the finish shown in this video.
It is a quick and dirty whip of the arm, with the intent to do this damage to allow the abductee the opportunity to run to safety.
If you are in Nova Scotia or the Halifax area and are interested in training with us, send me an email at mastermike@fournierhapkido.com.

This is a very practical method that not only disarms the attacker, but also incapacitates him. Unlike other methods that only take the weapon away (in which case you would have to be prepared to shoot an unarmed person if he advances). The technique shown here ends the conflict without (hopefully) anyone getting shot. Much easier to explain to the police when they arrive ;)

I would offer that it may be worth it as you get control of the gun hand to use an eye poke or gouge to help your cause. Your demonstrator here is a bit taller so each situation may be different but if it's me, I want to go for the eyes or a palm strike to the face to occupy the aggressor if their face is within easy reach. One thing I've noticed about fighters is no matter how tough they are, a finger deep into the eyes pretty much stops anything else they want to do.

Keep in mind that if you disarm in that way the gun will go off and hit someone else in the crowd...

Thank you for your comment Andrew, you make a good point. Certainly, whenever I do talk about gun violence and disarming during my seminars, this point is certainly mentioned (I didn't mention it in this short video). I also make a point to mention it to my police students too because they also need to be reminded of the several consequences of rash decision making in a heated moment without training. Having said that, the defender, at this very moment of self-preservation, does not have the luxury to think about a bystander getting struck by a bullet. But, in any situation where a gun is used against you, regardless of the purpose, there is always a chance the gun will go off. The reasons for this possibility are numerous but here are a few: 1. the finger is on the trigger, 2. the safety is off, and 3. there is a round up the spout. As for a crowd being present, you would have to paint the scenario. Each situation would certainly demand a strategy to disarm with minimum risk while ensuring personal survival. If you think too much about who might accidentally get hurt then the moment/opportunity will pass and you will die - if that's the assailant's intention. Regardless. When it comes right down to it you are in danger of being shot in the belly. Your brain's sole purpose is to ensure your survival. You know a gun disarming technique for this specific type of poking and you don't want to be shot in the belly. You disarm the assailant. Even in the likelihood that the gun went off, it will likely go off in the air and hopefully, gravity won't bring it down into someone's bedroom window. When it comes down to it, I would rather not be shot in the belly and I can tell you that, in the process of defending myself, the furthest thing from my mind would be the possibility of someone getting hit by a stray bullet. There is just no simple or easy way to avoid tragedy in any gun disarming situation unless the gun holder does not have a round chambered, or has the safety on, or has his finger off the trigger (which can easily be the case).
