To those people reading this comment, and are unfamiliar with Hapkido. Executive Security International (bodyguard school) in Aspen Colorado, taught control and restraint techniques. It is a VERY effective style, that lends itself well to security professionals who must protect the client, without using excessive force. Once a practitioner of Hapkido gets his ( or her) hands on you, you are in for a world of hurt.

It's like any art, you do it over and over until it becomes instinct, so no it's not unrealistic

Exactly. We always try to instill it's not the art but the practioner

This IS realistic. People literally throw punches like the demo was showing nowadays, and no one expects this stuff. With enough practice and repetition, it literally becomes second nature.

Yes it it in the ring or octigan. In the street you beter not go to the ground for a long time becouse they will stomp your head. MMA MEANS MIX MARTIAL ARTS. LEARMNING DIFRENT TYPES OF WAYS TO FIGHT. BUT MMA HAS BECOME A STYLE OF ITS OWN. WHAT WORKS FOR YOU USE IT.

+Jason Cruz The Art...no matter what it is, will ALWAYS be defined by the practitioner and not the Art itself. MMA fanboys definitely have no understanding of this and never will. The Gracie clan is not legendary solely because of BJJ. The hard work and lifetime commitment is every bit as responsible for their accomplishments, hands down.

Them throws and grapples look very good and well executed for hapkido, though them kicks at them end are really nothing more than over the top flashy gimmicks

I find it interesting how people see a 2 minute demonstration video on a martial art (any martial art) and feel versed enough to condemn it as ineffective. All martial arts train with choreographed movements and techniques until the student becomes proficient in these techniques. It is a given that no one is going to present a punch or grasp to be intentionally countered, nor is anyone going to stand by and be a punching/kicking dummy, anyone who sees choreographed techniques for training in any martial art as useless, has never seriously trained in my mind. Please Be respectful in your comments, and realize that the videos shown are a small portion of a given Martial Art. My respectful rant is done. to everyone who thinks these techniques are not 'real' or effective, this demo is obviously slowed way down (I know, why slow it down if you want to show it to be effective? not sure) and exaggerated. I good Hapkido school will have you drill moves over and over again, faster and faster with more and more realistic force and punches thrown at you. They will also emphasize more straightforward effective techniques similar to what Krav Maga borrowed from Hapkido. But at some point, unless both sides are very experienced, flexible and in great shape, someone will get hurt quickly and will be incapacitated for a long time. Then your school's students can't come to class and you don't have a business or a dojo/dojang anymore. Everyone wants to be tough or see 'effective' techniques, but no one wants to get hurt, IMHO.

Well done demo. As for the debate that always rages about styles and realism. Gang get over it. There's only so many ways to disable the human body (who's structure hasn't changed in centuries by the way.) The difference normally is cultural influence on methodology and the intended usage. We all know that many of the select styles were taught as 1 style during the war times of human history. Pancraese (the precursor in many ways to modern MMA along with Shoot boxe)used by the Greeks for battlefield is different than what it is now, Hapkido, Hwa Rang Do, Kuk Sul Wan take on a different form now that the Koreas are not on a war footing, No different than Greco Roman is different in a wrestling tourney than when used by Spartans and Trojans. Our arts are called martial for a reason. But as we get more "civilized or tech advanced" we consider ourselves beyond such brutality. Even during war times, it was never the style but the person using it. How else would the great Miyamoto Musashi have distinguished himself from other samurai? Many G.I's swear by the traditional training they received during the Korean, WW1 and WW2 wars. Why because their teachers taught them for their vocations, war. It was hard and rough but tempered with training in mental and emotional stability. We as teachers are returning to these things because our "civilized" societies are again becoming more warlike. We're realizing our students may have need of the skills we teach when they leave class. I'm not here to put any style down. I'm here making a plea to all of us as practioners to get over our own egos and just train. To be realistic about why you train and also realistic about the application of your training. Instructors educate your classes not just on technique but time, place and application for both dojo, family, work and street. Then add what the legalities of your training? In the end its up to the individual, when you face the bad guy, he won't care if you're a traditionalist or MMA or Combatives. All the bad guy will care about is if you can beat him and make it home alive.....
