Self-Examination? | Theocast

Should you regularly be questioning your salvation? What about self-examination? When and how should you do that? The guys answer these questions and consider several passages of Scripture that speak to these issues.

I had a good friend who would question my salvation. It's one thing to search our own hearts for self examination, repent of our sins, seek forgiveness and move on. It's quite another for our friends to question our salvation. I have not spoken with my friend for a long time. My salvation is not determined by what a pastor or my friend says. My salvation is a settled matter between myself and my Maker. He knows my heart. He puts the needs of others on my heart. He rebukes me when I've done wrong. He is working on a really awesome house for me right now, as I'm writing this comment.

It is exhausting.. Not matter what I do, what I think or how I view Christ , attempt to shift my mind. the doubt about my own salvation never goes away. It's a daily battle and prevents me from growing. I have been battling this since I was a child. I've read the books, talked to people, listened to the preaches and heard the encouragement. It's like there's a blockage that can't be brought down. I am convinced that God just doesn't want me. There are passages after passages of God hardening the heart of people and it feels like it's what he's doing to me. Just preventing me from really knowing him.

@@pappywinky4749 A Romans 7 experience is valid, because we have both the new and old natures living in one physical body, but thanks be to God, our spiritual body houses only the new nature which is filled with Christ and we are not of the earth anymore. We see all struggles from a different perspective now. We are seated in the heavenly places and already made perfect in Christ, so any earthly struggle is viewed from the standpoint of heaven and Christ in us.

I question my salvation nearly all day, everyday, by the second it seems. A haunting conscience and past guilt/shame/regret never leave the forefront of my mind. I think I believe/have faith in Christ, but what if I really don't? What if I just have faith in things about Him? How do I make sure I have true saving faith in the real thing/gospel/Christ?

It sounds like you've been listening to Lordship salvation errors. Faith is not some mystical goo that you "have." Faith is a transitive verb that needs an object. What's important is not so much faith as the object of our faith--that Jesus Christ the spotless Son of God came in flesh and died to pay for all your sins so that you can be justified by God. If you want to ask Christ himself to save you.

Really want you to talk about these James saying your faith is dead without works Jesus saying if people do not bear fruit you are cast in the fire and burned Jesus threatening to remove the candle from the churches and if the do obey they are in the book of life ( which makes it look like if they don't they aren't in it anymore or at all)

honest questions: I had some concerns with your podcast, chiefly this: what Reformed view are you stating and/or defending? Both in regards to how you defined self-examination as theological soundness and limited the scope of Paul's command to examine oneself prior to partaking of the Lord's Supper, you seem to be out of step with Reformed confessions (e.g., WLC Q&A 171) and the private views of Reformed folks like Calvin, many Puritans, Edwards, Hodge, Bavinck, Vos, etc. I think you guys were unhelpfully unclear--so could you point me in the direction of a confessional standard and/or theologian who says what you're saying? Thanks.

You are not capable of examining yourself because you are not the physician
