SELF-LAUNCH - kiteboarding tutorial by Global Kite Trips

Quick tips on how to self launch on the beach. This video will help you to understand the proper steps to execution this advance method of launching. Please be careful with every steps and try this in really light wind the first few times.

Why would you launch towards obstacles and danger?... if you have the option you should launch towards water or safety...you should also explain when it's safe to launch on your own ...gusty winds, high winds shifty winds, people in the launch zone etc.... nothing worse than a free kite that catches somebody....my 2 cents...I see many newbies trying to launch this way still unaware of the harm a free kite can do if released

Normally we start towards the ocean , for safety reasons . And much easier and safer is if you walk backwards and into the wind ,with not touching the bar. The kites turn on the same spot , not sliding around, when the kite gets wind you walk back , out of the wind a little bit, then pull carefully the upper line

Never ever do this. Something on the ground can tangle one side of the kite and start death looping it. The only safe way to self launch is with a fixed object like a kite anchor.

In my opinion, you should NOT hook the chicken loop to the harness before putting tension in all the lines and check that everything is OK. This way, if anything happen, you just open your hand and the kite flags. Because "just release your chickenloop" does not work. People try to control the kite and does not activate the quick release. That's why we have so many accident during the launch.

If you don’t hook the chicken loop in the harness,, what do you do with it , you hold it with one hand?? Makes it difficult to control the bar with only one hand? No On the other way , If you don’t hold the chicken loop and let it loose, and just pickup the bar,, you end up setting your kite in full power for the launch.,,, not a good idea.

According to my experience, this method of self launch is perfect,, A little close to the palm trees , but perfect.

@@jeff172172 yes I am an experienced kiter and that's why it is important to NOT hook to the harness before having tension in the lines. Once you've checked that everything is OK (no tangled lines, bridle in the wingtips) then you hook and launch the kite. Also, know that releasing a kite without chicken loop and safety attach to you, is not an option on a crowded beach....

The first move of the kite is done while kite is downwind. Only then she goes upwind to be perpendicular to the wind.. isn’t turning the kite while upwind somewhat dangerous? If the kite takes off ?

No it's the opposite, turning the kite while upwind will push it to the ground, so it doesn't slide downwind.
