I work as a paralegal editor. Depending on the country/state/municipality (Yes, all 3rd work in tandem on the law for each person) you can trademark your legal name. HOWEVER, and that is a big however, you cannot trademark common names. You'll need a unique surname or you'll need a brand behind that name that is already existing. Example, Stephen and King are both common names and common together, but as he has a brand behind him he could trademark his name BUT that trademark would only protect against other horror authors using that name. If a children's fiction author used their legal name which was Stephen King then his trademark wouldn't stop them. But if a children's fiction author used a pen name that was the same, he couldn't as it was an intentional misuse. But, also, someone in horror could use the pen name Steven King or Stephen Khing and he couldn't stop them as a trademark only protect exact phrases and/or phrases in joint with visuals. This ONLY applies to the USA, as I don't work internationally. And it does vary based on the area, field, name, etc. So you'd need to work with a professional who only does trademarks, but this post is just to say you can trademark a real name in unique situations.

AI should only concern writers who only write to make money. Artists don't ever care how many other artists exist, nor what the audience wants. Create from your soul because that's what your destiny is. Chase the money or the fame at your own peril.

For the class? Most of what we cover applies to any genre or nonfiction, but there will be a few gaps in terms of how to build a strong nonfiction platform, but we do cover so much that will be valuable regardless of genre, including non fiction!
