100% sustainable is a LOT of work. Here we here a "village" of seven families living along a single valley who trade, grow different things, share different skills and are as close to completely sustainable - off grid - as possible. Doing it on your own... Rabbits are mentioned. Best use of rabbits I have seen is the rabbit and chicken barn on the Salatin property...check that out. Love your bacon seed naming process. All the very best to you from Queensland Australia where it is illegal to have rabbits
@marylouise8903 жыл бұрын
Frank why is it illegal to have rabbits?

Because if “released” they will destroy the environment. Verified on google that my supposition was correct.

@@mymia731 Definitely true, I live in Victoria Australia and the rabbits are a pest. There are 2 diseases that are regularly released to control the population. Pet rabbits have to be vaccinated.

I was raised a city girl. Mom is country and she's always said, if you name it, it's a pet. I don't think I could name it then slaughter it. When my aunt told us, (I was 11, brothers 10 and 6) we were eating Samburgers, I almost cried. I didn't have a problem eating meat, still don't, but I just can't name them.

Its a balmy 30F in the sun today at 130pm New Hampshire time. I'm making potato thyme bread and thinking about ways to be more sustainable. We are able to provide a lot of items on our farm, but also want to support our farm neighbors. One family is delivering organic eggs today. In the past they have provided pork, chicken and lamb. We raise beef, hay , log and sell firewood. So it is a cooperative effort here.

Food wise, 100 percent self sustainability is possible. Especially, if you are vegetarian. Co-op homesteading is a better system when a community of people in a 10 miles radius to pitch in different type of food. Good luck with the pork chop, bacon and sausage, they look delicious... I meant cute! :)

38f sounds wonderful compared to the single digits WITHOUT POWER, HEAT, and WATER we had here in Texas. Been over 3 weeks and I still don't have running water. Thankfully the well was an easy repair, but it took awhile to locate the pipe under the Mobile home, let alone the leak. A FB stranger who use to repair these homes told me where to look for the pipe. Hopefully the leak will get fixed on Sunday. Wish the guy who had tried the water line for the garden and future animals had not tied it into the house. I'm so tired of hauling water to the goats.

Just a quick question, how much land do you own and is it all ‘animal’ friendly ? Only ask because I understood , depending on animal size , needs etc, it’s so much grazing per animal and room to rotate that is the deciding factor on use of land therefore dictating how self sufficient you can be . I am interested because I had an Uncle who owned a small ( by today’s standards) farm in Cheshire England . He was a dairy farmer with cows pigs hens . I believe they used to shop once a year . They grew everything. The cows were moved from field to field or half field to etc weekly . Are you planning on larger animals in the future? I have watched you from the start and admire the ‘can do no matter what ‘ attitude. Love your home btw
