Self Watering System For Plants | Gardena Smart System Setup & First Impressions

Is it worth it? A self-watering system for plants that you can control from your smartphone? It makes life so much easier! Sure, it wasn't really that hard to water the plants before, but you couldn't take a long vacation.
The Gardena Smart System (not sponsored, sadly!) turned out to be a real lifesaver and a great way to set up self watering plants. Was looking into building something myself, but it turned out that someone else already made the perfect self-watering system for plants, so why not just invest in that instead of spending hours upon hours trying to make something similar.
The Gardena Smart System app could do with some more work though, but I guess that might come in a later update :)

Is the base of this green house dug out into the ground? What's the idea behind that? Is there some benefits regarding temperature or moisture? Or just to keep height above ground to a minimum?

Yes, it is dug out quite a bit. Almost 80cm at one end of the greenhouse. It was mostly to even out the terrain, make room for proper drainage beneath it (packed gravel and a drain trench into a stone chest), but also to keep the height above ground to a minimum :) We gained about 50cm extra height, which is great! :)

Hello fella , my grand dad is having a big fruit tree garden consisting more than 150 trees, unfortunately he isn't willing or open to any type of improvement. I was wondering will this device will be useful for a big land ot would you recommend me any alternative way of watering.

Wow, that's a lot of trees to water! I think you need something on a more industrial grade for that, this is more for smaller plants. Not sure what to recommend to be honest, that's a bit out of my league. Good luck! :)

It seems like the Gardena small flow/pressure control taps are not good at providing a low pressure. They are either off or on very high.

Noticed the same thing. I had some problems with dirt getting into the taps though, so after rinsing them out they worked better. But I agree, it's super tricky to adjust them to find some kind of middle ground / low pressure setting.

I have just bought 180ft (Apprx 52mtrs)of the smaller hose and it would make more sense to only use it in one length, instead of cutting small lenght to be attached to the thicker hose. Unfortunately, I could not find any answer to this online.

Especially the feature that lets me trigger the watering session depending on soil moisture, that's perfect for giving the plants just the right amount of water. Thinking about getting more sensors though, to measure the moisture level more accurate around the garden.
