This is a really good way of explaining it. I keep hearing that martial artists are doing it wrong by stretching before class, but when people don't stretch is when they tend to get injured. I was trying to match up the expert advice with my actual experience, and this really hits the nail on the head. Light static stretching before martial arts so you have the full range of motion.

Amazing content. I thought I would never know when to stretch. It was so confusing! Thank you very much.

Absolutely Right!! Never do intense stretching cold - always warm up beforehand. I liked the way we used to do it in the 80’s Taekwondo, nice warm up, fairly intense stretching, long workout with full contact sparring at the end, and then more intense longer stretching at the end w/ a little meditation.

In a nutshell: warm up prior to stretching

I do both, stretching before is mostly to crack and correct my spinal chord because I have a genetically weaker spine. After is for the muscles to relax after a big workout. My stretches before consist of doing arm windmills forward and backwards 2 with each arm while walking and then doing it again while basically skipping on each foot at a time for about 10 seconds each, then going to do some basic hip twists, knee juggles and ankle twirling to loosen them up and then go to the elbows, crack those once overhead and once in front of the chest and then my neck. My neck mostly consists of cracking side to side, shaking no, knodding and twisting.

When you body is warmed up, enzymes activates that helps muscles work, and flex and so on. Enzymes in washing soap starts getting active at a certain temperature - as an example. So it is with enzymes helping muscles work. ;-)

As a 39 year old coming back to bjj after a 5 year layoff due to injury I need to warm up and stretch before class. When I don't I end up rolling out of bed onto my knees and missing class for the rest of the week.

I like doing the yoga like stretching everyday before bed. Got results pretty quick.

I believe it's NOT a good idea to do deep stretching AFTER intense physical activity because one is more likely to injure a fatigued and overworked muscle.
