The seatbelt while standing is a bit risky. Someone can easily reach into their pockets for a knife or something, and you're too close behind them to be aware of that

Erm ok the op got beaten up and found his katas and forms were no good for fighting. I got news for you they were not developed for that, kata are not for fighting they are they teach you a series of techinques that were in a certain sequence for that type of incident the creator had in mind. Most people what who hate katas and forms just look at them and think useless. Sure you get lazy teachers and say just do this, well if the op had any sense he would have walked a long time ago. I would have, so no katas not help in fight but the techniques might. No sparring does not help you win a fight, why? Because there are rules, number one do not bust each other up. Now if you want to learn to fight go your local bar every weekend and challenge some on to a fight. No martial arts can teach you self defence, they can teach you to live in a self defence situation, please not i did not say win i will say it again. Karate et al were designed to get you out of bad situation. They were close quarter fighting systems. I know this beause my back ground is in grappling, k so i can see it a mile off. Judo, BJJ, wrestlingm, Boxing, Karate wil not help you to win but knowing one or more may help to live. So do not be closed mind and learn what the past to offer.

This is the first time I’ve heard anyone else point out that you can use the influx of adrenaline to your advantage. You can learn to channel it into an explosive pre-emptive strike that’ll end a fight fast if you’re punch technique is solid and you aim well. Fear is a great motivator when you learn how to use it.

Some good fundemental things to think about. Very often though, someone that attacks will be much bigger and if you close the distance you must not get taken down, especially with possible multiple attackers; often times you might be a goner if this happens. The bulldozing, rapid swim punching, shock and awe, big bubba brawler attack is a tough nut to crack and is not much covered in martial arts. You have to survive the initial onslaught that will probably come without warning, and then match intensity and rapidity with precision and purpose (and not just flail back). Since it's self defense you are going to be blocking and backing up to the 45' angles first, maybe two, three, four times while you size up their vulnerabilities. There is not room here to write out complete strategies with variations, but you did speak of all-important counters - the first simple three that come to mind in this situation, or similar are: 1st - you have to hurt those incoming arms! That will slow things down - when you step to the 45 you have to strike/block those arms with all your power (that you have practised and conditioned yourself to do), 2nd - you have to (from the 45) kick those vulnerable knees from the side, to break or tear them, and 3rd, if you fear for your life, when your are ducking under those punches, execute some kind of strikes directly to his windpipe or voicebox.............these counters are only 3, single-stage counters out of literally thousands, but they are good ones. I can't resist - one more; while you are ducking and dodging those initial punches, if you can manage to poke one of his eyes (with say a "knife-hand") the fight will be guaranteed to be over. (nothing, but nothing stops a UFC fight faster than an eye gouge or eye poke.) That will bring everything to a halt, so you can get away from the moron.

Good technique. But in the implied application you’re potentially giving the gun side to bad guy upon closing the gap, in fact your pulling one of his hands to your gun if your right handed.

I only found this video because I was looking up how long ruptured eardrums take to heal after being hit. I was accidentally clapped over the ear in training and my eardrum ruptured. As the video states, may not be a likely scenario, and wouldn't rely on it in a fight - but if you have a history of ear issues it is much more likely and very possible. Anyway, 3-6 weeks to heal if anyone else is looking for the same thing.

This is not the unbending arm. You splay out your hand to activate the tendons and try to bend at the elbow. It's simple physics combined with tendon strength which is stronger than steel cable. Effectively you're building a steel cable bridge with your arm, your body and your opponents body. Once you understand this principle, you can apply it to the bodies natural reaction to push danger away. Tony Blaur uses this concept in his SPEAR system . He calls it outside 90 due to your arm being slightly bent.

People forget kung fu and other traditional martial arts were actually used by soliders in the battlefield. Open handed strikes were probably used more than punches. Hence why we see them in figtunh sequences in films

I worked in restaurants, clubs, bars, and pubs, doing security for 14 years and as an LEO for 8 years. This is perfect! It is exactly how I deal with unruly people. You don't even have to apply the choke the drag gives you so many options. Works standing and on the ground, even for guard passing (matador passes are basically drags). Ty for posting

Just stick to the BJJ and grappling. Knife versus knife happens also in the West as some comments already explained. Also, your definition of knife fighting is wrong.

I'd choose martial art that has professional competition. Boxing, muaythai and BJJ standout. Find a gym that has ex fighter teaching, and has nurtured successful protege fighting professional competitions. The gym should be convenient to get to, and the atmosphere should be to your liking. Muaythai has clinching, and you can avoid going to the ground, kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2fHZHqga66Ya80

Good video however let me address few points. There seems to have a confusion about self-defense is. Surely this definition is tricky and different people may have a different definition of what self-defense really means. Self-defense is not the same as street fighting. Street fights are avoidable, self-defense situations (by law) are not. Self-defense arts like Okinawan Karate or perhaps even (good) Krav-Maga teaches you how to defend yourself in the context of a self-defense. Self-defense is not about learning to be a competitive fighter. Self-defense means very close range, unavoidable conflict and need to hurt your opponent as fast as possible. Sport fighting are the opposite of that. I'm not saying a BJJ, boxing, MMA, Muay-Thai fighter will not be efficient in the context of self-defense. His techniques will work well, but the mindset and the strategies are different. Hitting without gloves is the whole different game. Taking the fight to the ground is highly dangerous in a self-defense situation. It's quite different. Now, fighting sports or more generally sparring bring a lot of value as you said (stamina, timing, distance management, stress, pain tolerance, etc...). There'd no need to choose from either. It's two aspects of martial arts. Both should be trained imo. No need to compare and choose. Both are interesting and both bring value.

I'm a fan o' the Classic "Glasgow Kiss" like the one you said not to do... But, timing is everything... Also, bend from the hips, not the neck... The goal is to hit the bridge o' the nose with the highest part o' your forehead, Where the dome starts... If you pin him to the floor, by standing on his foot, 100% o' the force is transferred to his nose... Nasty? You bet! But highly effective! It's a great fight ender!

When i was in tae kwon do as a teen i was able to wait for a sidekick and then step to the same side and cut an angle with the rear leg and get behind someone, havent really been able to do it lately but i think based on this video its likely because i was attwmpting to do it after dodging a roundhouse and they are able to follow too easily makes it not worth it. Nice video

OThere's always at least one watching. Wether he helps his buddy or not is questionable. Ive been beat up many times, so i know from experience. If your losing they probably won't, but if you're winning?? The larger person uses what he is best at. Ground and pound, or sucker long range punches. any self-defense is better than none. Always avoid, don't fight for pride, only if u have no choice.

Sorry, i disagree. Cuz in a real fight their gonna do anything they can to win, biting scratching etc. getting on the ground in a street fight will never end well. All it'll take is one person to decide "hey, I'm gonna help out my buddy" and you get curb stomped because you're busy on the ground.

Hi Stephan. I’m late to the party but here’s my question. I’m late 40s and have been in bjj for 20 years. I’m contemplating that at some point I’m probably going to have to stop training or at the very least stop rolling. Probably not soon but maybe in 10+ years. I’ve noticed though that the karate/kung fu guys can train well into their 60s and 70s due to the emphasis on forms/kata and less emphasis on actual sparring like bjj or kickboxing etc. So…. Once we are too old for the combat sports where do we go?
