Romance is one thing that most Batman movies struggle with. However, Batman Returns is probably the only one where I'm genuinely invested in the relationship between Bruce and a significant other.

i think batman returns has the advantage here in that this significant other actually went through some mental/emotional arc. selina had to literally die, then be revived, had a nervous breakdown and completely changed her personality around. vicki vale or chase meridan definitely didnt do any of that stuff. additionally, selina went through all of that BY HERSELF aka batman (or even bruce wayne) had nothing to do with selina's transformation so when her transformed self met up with batman/bruce wayne, the dynamic was instant and amazing.

Jalen Johnson-They suggest that Selina is still alive at the end of the movie, & they hint that she & Bruce will meet again eventually, so even though they don't end the movie together I always felt the two of them would rekindle the relationship at some point. Plus Tim Burton was supposedly planning on bringing her back for the third movie before the studio forced him out and Joel Schumacher wound up making Batman Forever instead.

I always loved how his first reaction to finding out she is Catwoman was to immediately wipe her tears and hold her close. That is exactly Bruce and Selina’s relationship. Every moment of this scene perfectly captures that

Yeah. In TDK universe Bruce feels too "normal" for lack of a better word. His playboy mask while an act isn't as far removed from normal Bruce in terms of intensity and stoicism. Bruce without the mask should be someone who you wouldn't necessarily be comfortable with and who always seems on the edge or intense. TDK Bruce and TDKR Selina feel closer to normal well adjusted human beings so their dynamic isn't as unique or singular. Like honestly looking at Keaton and Pffeifer no one else at the party would be a suitable match. With Hathaway and Bale any normal person could potentially match them. Their personalities aren't as apparently "off" as they are in this film.

Bruce and Selina, to me personally, will never work as a married couple. They want two very different things out of the relationship that the other can’t- or isn’t willing to- give. They work great as illicit lovers, and sometimes even as partners. But when it comes to settling down, Selina is never going to want the kind of life Bruce has, nor will she be able to keep her anti-heroic deeds in check enough to make Bruce happy.

And that's a true valid point! But-- not for me, honestly. Sorry. Tim Burton's version is the definitive version of Catwoman for me - almost entirely his Batman is, too. And always will be. Just because she feels truest for me here, and so moving to an extent I too-rarely felt with any type of art or media yet. I, for example, can't tolerate the lesbian, toddler-minded, silly-joker (because let's make her family-friendly) Catwoman. Nor accept a Bruce Wayne as an egocentric male slut. I know, this is how DC have portrayed those characters for so long-- I just can't buy this depiction of them. Sorry. Have I always seen Catwoman as a possible thief? Well, yes!!! Absolutely. I think she enjoys the thrill of action. That's why I also see her vividly as a possible vigilante. But she's also somewhat unstable and too violent - and I feel they, as a couple, could as-perfectly learn how to help properly themselves with that. But of course always keeping their “Do fear me” posture (towards villains). Moreover, they're actually soulmates in this movie. Finally as for Bruce, as I just said, I do perceive him as someone very proud rather than a blindly egocentric one: which would make him a rather-noble character, at heart, morals and personality; and I do feel the more refined, elegant Batman characters are, the more of a cold, devious, intelectually ingenious menace they represent. But I also recognize the challenge making them like this way it could be. Not-to-say making them “edgier” for the mere sake of it - because they'd sell more in a short-term so - seems as poor and stupid as this term can represent. Definitely not for me!!!!! ^^'

It’s trauma, my friend....both are damaged individuals seeking comfort with one another in their own way. They’re the same type of people suffering from PTSD and hatred in their hearts. The bad boy-damaged girl effect is on full display here. Except it’s more of Bruce/Batman being the damaged boy. They can relate to each other’s pain...they understand each other, but aren’t healthy for one another.
