It's funny how the dealer always expects 2 sets of keys when you are trading in the car, but when you buy a used car from them, they NEVER give you 2 sets unless you beg them for it.

I sold a Toyota Camry years ago when I bought my current car and the phrase that worked well was "Hey, by the way, I have a Camry for sale for $15,000 if you are interested". It was an entirely new frame of mind for them and it worked. They bought the car and we were both happy.

I get a quote with trade-in appraisal included. If they lowball me on the trade, I go somewhere else. Carvana offer is the best you'll get but the dealerships know this and they will bring up the sales tax benefit part. Carmax is number two, not far behind carvana, and the salesman will say then take it to carmax and come back here to buy your new one. That's when the buyer needs to say, "You don't really want me to do that because Carmax makes it very easy to get behind the wheel of something that's on their lot, have a 24 hour take-home test drive and no dealer fees or any of that nonsense. " You have to remind them that YOU going to carmax is something they don't want to have happen because there's a chance they'll lose the sale to Carmax. This is where the buyer needs to sell the salesman on selling you their car. And I know it's hard to believe but that's what you have to do in this day and age. Motivate them to sell it to you. You have to do more selling than they do.

I did this back in 2021. Went to carmax and got a price for my tundra and took it to the Honda dealership where I wanted to buy a Honda accord and that dealership didn’t even try they told me to sale it to carmax so I did and bought my accord from carmax. I didn’t want to buy from dealership after that bc they didn’t even try to win me as a customer.

I look at the sales tax incentive this way: it's MY sales tax benefit. They don't get to say, "you save $1500 on sales tax, so we're offering you $1500 less on your trade." That shifts the benefit to them. Considering a private sale would likely recoup the sales taxes you'd pay and then some, they're really just playing with you.

I bought my truck at the end of August and did something very similar to this video.. except by phone. Negotiated the price of my trade before they saw it, negotiated the OUT THE DOOR price. Got it in WRITING and then went to the dealership to make the deal. LOVE this CHANNEL!!!
@jerrylundegaard2592
@jerrylundegaard2592 6 сағат бұрын
The simple fact the dealer offered an OTD amount in writing before the customer visits does not mean the deal was exceptional. If the dealer gives an amount for your trade, more likely than not, money was left on the table. Dealers do not offer solid amount for a trade unless they are making up the profit elsewhere in the deal, particularly when have not seen the trade vehicle. Also negotiating the out the door amount (there is no such thing as an out the door price, there is price plus fees and taxes which result in the out the door amount). Negotiating the OTD amount allows the dealer a chance to conduct mischief with the deal.

@@jerrylundegaard2592 I will provide the details and I think you will agree it was a pretty solid deal. I bought a '24 Silverado ZR2 with the Duramax - sticker was 75K. (Dark Grey with tech package and folding tailgate options) First contact with them they do their this is what we can do for you.. I'm like no.. this is what I see. I see the price as 63K. He asked me how I got to that number. I stated knock 10% off the sticker to get to Dealer Invoice.. so that takes it to 67.5K Then knock off another $4500 for the incentives that were going on.. Brings us to 63K Then it comes time to talk my trade.. they offered 55K, I countered at 57K pointing out that my trade is on dealers lots for 62K or higher.(But I also saw they were not moving at that price) He asked what it took to close the deal, and I said my trade in plus 6K in cash and we got a deal. (So I got an even bigger savings from this point) Ran it by his boss, came back at $6060 plus trade. I live in Houston, the truck was in Dallas.. As I drove up there I remember I had my GM card which you can redeem points towards a new vehicle.. and I had enough earnings to max out the redemption at $1500.. so that was also applied before taxes. I ended up writing a check for $4400 gave them my old keys and I got a new truck which I LOVE.

I think i got a good deal. I made a mistake in early December buying a X5 as it came with sport seats. After driving at length it became apparent the seats were a huge problem . Very uncomfortable. I had paid $66k for a 2025 silver anniversary that had a MSRP of $80k. Only 900 miles. Long and short i drove the car for 3000 miles down to Florida and immediately started looking for a replacement. As of two days ago, an Audi dealer in Tampa (good people there, ask for A.J Gonzalez) gave me what I paid on the trade in x5 and knocked off $10,000 on a new 2025 Q8. The Q8 has everything I wanted. Color, packages and even two axle steering. I was pleasantly surprised as it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. I prefer the Q8 in any case but would not hesitate to buy another X5 if it has the multi-contour seating. X5 is a great car and had the seats been multi-contour on mine, I’d have kept it. It’s going to be bmw or Audi for me moving forward. I was very fortunate

Not sure how the sales tax in NY works, but across the border here in Vermont, sales tax is established and paid to the state when the vehicle is titled and registered. If I sell my own car, outside of any purchase deal, I can still take the trade-in value off of the new car purchase price for tax purposes. In other words, you don’t have to trade-in at the dealership you’re buying at to get the tax benefit.

3rd party always give more than the dealer for trades BUT remember if you trade with the dealer the same percentage of your local sales tax, my zip code sales tax is 10%, so if you trade with the dealer at the time of a vehicle sale then you get that percentage of the trade price off the sales tax of the new vehicle you are buying and if you go to a 3rd party you will NOT get that percentage off the sales tax of the new vehicle. example Carvana gives you $30K for your trade Dealer gives you $28K for your trade plus you get your sales tax percent from the trade off the sales tax off the new vehicle so for me thats 10% of $28K so $2,800 off the sales tax of my $50K new truck so it comes out to a total of $28K + $2,800 - $30,800 which is $800 more than 3rd party and its all done at once with no refinancing unless you get a rebate for using their bank then refinance with your credit union for less interest and get the rebate for using their bank also.

You can often get the sales tax reduction when you sell your “trade-in” yourself. Generally, sales tax is paid when you title the car. Yes, new car dealers will collect the sales tax from you and hand it over to the state when they do the title and reg for you, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Simple answer. Sell your car at Carmax (they give excellent money IMHO) -- or those guys with signs that offer more money than Carmax for your car with those signs outside of Carmax. You can get a cash offer beforehand. Do not incorporate it in your purchase. You will not win with car dealers.

I would almost never do a trade in deal with a dealer. It doesn't matter how well you took care of your car, how good of a condition it's in, or what the market price actually is. They will always low ball you. Always sell your vehicle yourself and get a fair price for it.

An informed customer is a good customer. I’ve been selling for almost 10 years. I love it when people are informed. Actually makes my job easier. I’ve always striven to be straightforward and honest. I’ve asked this question before and still would like an answer from the viewers. If the dealership takes your car in for $20,000.. what should we sell it for? Everyone says we are “ripping people off”. So what’s a fair deal?

Why some dealers want to low ball the trade in amount is why folks gets upset real quick. Dealer acts like their vehicle is made of gold and your trade in is made of clay at best. I don't see why dealers care when you mention a trade in vehicle. In my opinion buying a new vehicle and selling your current vehicle (trade in) to the same dealer is more of two separate transactions that get rolled into one. You would think dealers would be keen to get a trade in cause of the likely hood of the dealer making money off of the trade in as well
