They will become serious rivals to established brands.

I worked for Hyundai/ Kia in the early 2000's when there cars were just a little better than disposable. They followed a slightly different business model than the Japanese manufacturers. If you motor or trans grenaded under warranty you got a manufacturer rebuild slapped in. We'd drop the damaged motor/trans in the plastic crate the rebuild came in and sent it back to them to rebuild and put in parts inventory. They didn't want mechanics spending time rebuilding, they replaced parts most of the time. That's what made the 10yr. drivetrain warranty work and that was a HUGE selling point back then. Still is. If we had the engine/trans in stock you could have your car back and running in a day if we got to it first thing in the morning. Imo it was a better/improved system. I stuck around until 2007 when mgnt changed and bounced. There cars are so much better now that I actually bought my wife a 2017 Sonata with confidence and have had a great time with it so far. Also, this is coming from a hardcore Toyota fanboy so they're doing something right. I still love my Tundra tho.

So Randy missed beating his Tesla time by .650 seconds, but really less than a sneeze. Last year had major weather issues. I don't know what challenges they had this year. Above are the official times from the Pikes Peak website. I also got this quote from an INSIDEEVS article that states: IONIQ 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec wins the exhibition class with a record of 9 mins 30 secs, while IONIQ 5 N follows with an impressive 10 mins 49 secs result. 4:39 Personally, i would prefer cars to have both, like, i get it, screens make cars easier/cheaper to manufacture, they also increase reliability overall(fewer failure points) but i just like to be able to reach down without taking my eyes off the road and do the thing i intend to do rather than press the ejecto-seato or release the trailer hitch when i just wanted to change radio stations. Me personally, i do like the redundancy of having both input methods as it means if one fails, i have the other to fail back to.

Ive been to their Namyang R&D place and they have their own little skunk-works division of people for the N cars. Its really cool, young guys and girls and they had their own cool manga style "N-boys" (or something like that) t-shirts. So a really fun bunch of people who are clearly having fun taking EVs in their own direction. They also have a place in Russelsheim that i think has been responsible for a lot of the "rise" of Hyindai/Kia into a place where people will readily consider one over a VW/Honda/Toyota etc. IMO they make some of the most interesting "normal" cars on the road.

Cool vid Rich. My biggest, and only concerns are two things. I lived in South Korea for 5 years, did a bunch of tech support/website stuff there, and I'm still unconvinced of their overall/longterm build quality. Also, their recent 'hands off' $50K battery replacement price for the Ionic 5 on two different vehicles for undamaged batteries(just the external cover was damaged). Writing off the car for essentially cosmetic damage seems pretty shady. Would love to see a vid from you on those incidents.

I mean ... if you think this is unique to this electric car making company ... I got bad news for you. You have a point but that doesn't make them any worse than anyone else. Which says a lot more about the waning power of consumers than it does Hyundai.

A lot of people say "it's too expensive" but here's what they're not considering. In order for this car to be this unique in the way it does what it does, you need creative engineering and software development. Theses things cost money, and to me it's worth it.

It's so expensive because it isn't subsidized like the Tesla. Simple as that. Here in Europe the gap between this and the M3P (which is neutered in our market by Tesla compared to the US version) is much smaller.

Unpopular opinion - "minimalism" is just rebranded cost-cutting. Software is so much cheaper than dedicated buttons and switchgear. Also the N E-shift mode is significantly slower than the standard EV mode. You can also hit the red NGB button on the wheel to bring you up to 641hp for 10sec.
