FYI James Patterson didn't write most of those books. His name is on hundreds of books because he makes a deal with new unknown authors. He reportedly provides and outline (if he does that much), and they write the book. That's the only reason he has so many.

I found this video very interesting. I'm in the USA and have been selling bundled books since about 2003. Where I live we have a lot of used book sales and library stores. I would research authors and make lists of the series and mark off each book when I found it. Once I had a complete set, then I would list it on eBay and start fresh again. Up until 2009 I would sell the books in auctions, after that, fixed price unless I wanted to give them away. If I find ready-made sets of books, I'd also spend more for them. Thanks for the great videos!

Books used to sell on auctions on eBay? 😯. That’s actually shocking to me lol. Even a $50 book sells for whatever you priced it at now so $.01 for most people plus shipping lol. It’s kind of sad. I would never sell books anymore if it wasn’t for me finally getting on amazon and most of them selling for WAYYY more on there.
@kenblosser64342 жыл бұрын
@@picklikeapro6952 I made a good living by selling bundles in auctions before 2009. I'd start the bidding at .99. Very rarely was I disappointed in the return. After 2009 when the economy failed, that things changed. I had to start selling them at set prices or give them away. Even now, when I comp prices, books that sold on auctions don't bring back near as much as the set prices. The sad part was that with auctions I could depend on the money coming in every week. With set prices I couldn't, so I had to get back into the work force.

@@kenblosser6434 yea. I’m almost to the point of having to go back to work and I sell everything. Right when I was about to gas prices dropped a little and sales finally got a little spike but I know what you mean. Q1. Remembering what books you need to complete a set/bundle. Say you purchase a haul and there are a few incomplete sets. Q1a) how do you remember which books you have vs what you need when out in the thrift? Q1b) how do you organise/store these incomplete sets/bundles until you complete and list them?

Thanks for this! It certainly prompted me to check my listings and make some tweaks that I'd missed. It certainly sounds like books in Australia hold their value a little better than they do here in the UK. Most low value books sell for less than £3 with shipping and I honestly have no idea how they do it (approx $6 Aus). I'm focusing mostly on good value bundles that sell quickly (in most cases, less than a week) which helps with limited storage space even if the profit may only be as little as £2 when sold but I'm getting to the point now where most are double what I spent on each book, less fees (shipping charged extra). Certainly not a get rich quick scheme but I'm liking that this is something I can do around my full time salaried position and I love books so having lots of them around isn't the worst problem to have... Occasionally I stumble across a higher value book but they're a nice surprise.

Thanks for the video, Mel. I have a collection of Hardy Boys books from the 60s and 70s, as well as a bunch of Nancy Drew books, not sure of the years. I was about to donate them to the thrift store because they're not worth all that much. Most of the Hardy Boys are hardback, not sure about the Nancy Drew ones. This video gives me pause for reflection. I used to charge free shipping until I started getting burned on best offers, so I'm a bit gun shy on offering free shipping. In the US, books can go a cheaper media mail rate but take longer to deliver. I don't think I could fit anymore than 2 hardback or thick paperback books in a padded envelope, so if I were to bundle these books, I'd almost have to ship them in some kind of box. Incidentally, I always shrink wrap books, if more than one book, but in both directions versus the one direction you illustrated. I also always will put a piece of cardboard on each side of the books for additional support. I notice that you did not do that. Since I can't really put more than 2 hardbound or thick paperback books in a padded envelope, how would you recommend I approach the bundling issue? This is my first time discovering you from your comment in a Hairy Tornado group post asking which books are the ones people are selling. Thank you for including your YT channel. Glad to meet you. I have a few friends in the Land of Oz from other FB groups. Good people-all! Also, I have many book collections by other authors, such as Louis L'Amour and William W. Johnstone, as well as a bunch of Babysitter's Club books, maybe some others, but those are the ones that come to mind.

I am surprised that the mini shrink wrap doesn't warp the book backs out of shape. I am also surprised that you can send the books in bubble mailers. For example, last week I got something completely for free because it was damaged in transport and another box last week was so damaged during shipping that they had had to tape it back together Frankenstein's Monster style. Fortunately for them it was craft paper so it withstood the rough handling. Clearly you know what you are doing, but it is difficult to see how you don't have a lot of books damaged in transport.

@@backfromburnout One way to sell a lot with varying conditions, is to put the grade range in the title. In the condition box, put in the average grade for the lot. If the lot isn't too big you can list the individual books with a grade. As to selling individual Patterson books, you can create a listing for the author with a price range, and the titles and let the customer create their own lot. This is one way to have the books available for sale while you are waiting to find the missing one or two yo might need to fill a series. It also gives you exposure to the buyers who are looking to for single copies to fill a series.

@backfromburnout2 жыл бұрын
Great question, similar in terms of money, but this year will be the real test as I am committed to trying to actually grow the business better and I'm being mentored by Chris @dailyrefinement. Books are easier to photograph and list but they take up much more space, they are heavy and I'm constantly lugging very heavy bags of books to and from the car, the postage bags are also heavy (you would think I would have bigger muscles by now LOL) and to do books you HAVE to do more volume as a lot of book are low priced. There is a lot more sorting involved with books culling the one's you don't want. So books are certainly not easier in anyway and I work hard.

I have a ton of Children's books. Do you find it is better by theme, reading level, grade of books?
@backfromburnout3 жыл бұрын
Reading level is important. Small kids won’t really mind the theme. All genders will love books on animals, cars, monsters, fairytale. YA fiction is great to sell in series and they often have lots of books in a series. The best thing about childrens books is they are often sold very cheap and they can sell great in bundles!! I have sold childrens books both by reading level and theme. Putting a bundle of Disney books together, a bundle all on monsters, or cars or princesses can work. You can title those with key words like girls interest and boys interest.

Thanks for the video. With the book bundles do you pay for shipping or have the buyer pay for shipping?
@backfromburnout10 ай бұрын
It’s included in the price. It doesn’t really make a difference it’s all psychological how you charge for postage. Either it’s free (but not really as it’s added into the sale price) or it’s charged separately. Same price at the end of the day. eBay does like sellers to offer free postage.

Thank you for getting back to me. I am just getting started selling books and I have a lot that their value is under five dollars. So I’m not really too sure how to get rid of them. Selling them individually is not a good option because I would take a loss. so I have to figure out how I can bundle them to get rid of them.

Hi Mel. Love your videos, very entertaining and informative. Was wondering what would be the biggest book bundle you would sell? I have over 20 of Agatha Christie Poirot series, would you bundle them together or split them and if split in to how many please?
@backfromburnout3 жыл бұрын
I like to send my bundles in the flat rate mailers so they have a 5kg weight limit so I try and stick with that so it depends if they are heavy books with a bundle that big and how much the postage would be. If you are offering "free shipping" and the shipping is high on the weight you may be better to split the bundle. Also look at the sold comps and see what others similar are selling for in bundles. I sell mills and boon in large bundles but the books are very small and thin.
@BKVendingFlipping2 жыл бұрын
Amazing info, thanks so much for sharing. If you had to guess, how long do your bundles sit before they sell? Is it a lot of long tail? Also, do you always have free shipping as media mail?
@backfromburnout2 жыл бұрын
Some of them sell super fast - same day even. Some of them take a little longer but that’s the same with all types of books. Some of them are always more long haul. I try to price them to keep them moving out the door

Are there any certain series or authors that you'd recommend to sellers?
@backfromburnout3 жыл бұрын
Most of them actually do really well. Some of the really common ones might take longer to sell as you are competing with the masses. There are a few I have learnt that are really slow sellers like Patricia Cornwell and Jodi Picoult. I rarely buy them anymore and will only take them if I get them for free. It's not that they don't sell, they just sell slowly and for cheap.

When you bundle different authors, what do you do for item specifics? Do you just input 1 of the authors/titles? Thanks!

Question : When you ship a bundle of 5,6 books , can you send all of them media mail and that’s 1 fee for all of them or for each book ? How do you ship them? Thx a lot !!!

Thanks for the info on bundles! How much time do you spend on the descriptions? Do you use a generic paragraph for all of them or do you get specific for each one? It seems to take me forever to do this part. Help!

@@backfromburnout Thanks! I just started taking the photos ahead and set them in the folders and I agree that does help. My issue is that I'm only selling vintage books. It takes a while to be sure that I've got the right info (1st ed., price and condition). But I need to get braver and be less detailed in the condition description. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Also, you have the most information out there. I appreciate it.

Hi Mel! Just found your channel recently and im interested in reselling books also, is this your main occupation and also how long did it take you from this being a side hustle to a full time job? And also can anyone sell books on ebay or is there gating? Thank you so much!!
@backfromburnout3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks and welcome to my channel! I've been a full time seller for about 3-4 years I think now (I'm losing track lol). I've been concentrating on books now for the last two years. I do sell some other items in my store but my main focus is in books. They are easy for me to source and in abundance where I live so with my busy lifestyle and four kids this really helps me. Anyone can sell books on eBay. It's actually a really under rated category I think. Many resellers dismiss books but there is some great money to be made in books - especially when bundling!

I sell heaps of non fiction and do make non fiction bundles. I sell cookbook bundles, bundles on sports - like cricket, bundles on happiness, Buddha, depression. True crime is another genre that I sell in assorted bundles.

Mel, fabulous content - and just what I wanted to know! One thing, do you charge for post or is it free shipping? I saw you put a bundle in a bag to ship - was that a flat rate? I'm in U.S. and not sure about pricing for shipping....?
@backfromburnout3 жыл бұрын
Most orders yes I offer "free shipping". It tends to be what people expect with books. On my clothes and shoes etc always add the shipping as extra and sometimes with really large heavy bundles I add postage as extra on books. But generally I incorporate the shipping costs in. The mailers in Australia are flat rate prices and all have a 5kg weight limit so it's really handy as I don't have to weigh my bundles very often. I also get good postage discounts with a business postage account as I send a lot of orders.

Not to tell you your business, but hardcover books that have a SEWN binding WILL lie flat; it's the ones that have a glued binding that won't lie flat. Once upon a time, all books came with sewn bindings and cloth or leather covers. Unfortunately, most publishers these days glue their hardcover books because it's cheaper to do; however, they still charge their customers the same high price as the better made sewn books! You'd be surprised what publishers will charge for brand new books that a crappily made!

James Patterson doesn't actually write his books. He writes an outline and notes and a co-author writes the book.

Wow, I didn't know that. But it makes sense as he has other names on some of the books. No wonder he can pump those books out and he has so many! I was thinking to myself, does this man ever take a break! LOL
