After the corona crisis (2.5 years ago), I quite my job, sold my house, car and many household items. I have no regrets. I moved in with my Thai girlfriend in Bangkok. One year later we moved to Bangsaen, Chonburi and are very happy. My advice: just do it.

Selling everything is the easy part. What no one seems to talk about is finances. If you don't mind sharing, where would one put all their money when they sell. Do you keep all your money in the UK bank and do a few tranfers a year to a Thai bank account? Do you use your bank to transfer or do you use a money transfer service? Is there a limit on how much you send once or do you have to worry about that? Is there any questions you have to answer when sending like where or how you have this money on either end like in Thailand or UK? Proof of where it came from like in statements or anything? Do you invest your money in index funds like with Vanguard? Or is there an international investment company you can put your money with low fees? Do you need to keep a UK address or can you setup a virtual one?

Currently in the process of moving to Thailand with my Thai wife, to live closer to her family in Ubon. Quit our jobs here and sold my house, car, motorcycle and other non personal stuff. We will move like you, with only 1 suitcase and 1 carry-on each. About 15 years ago i decided to go live in Thailand as soon as i could, and thats why i studied Thai language for 2 years. So now that time has come, since i've lost my dad about 5 years ago and my mom (who needed care 24/7) passed away about 7 months ago. No brothers/sisters/children, so for us this is a rather easy decision. Time will tell if it's the right one or not.. Thank you for your carwash vids, they always are enjoyable!

Everything you are saying is true. I"m getting rid of the stuff in my apt now here in Canada, and making the decision about where to go. The best thing going for me is I have a regular income with a pension. Not a huge one, but it's survivable. I've travelled all around Thailand, staying 5-6 months each time, no use for Pattaya and the bar scene. Very little nightlife for me being 67 yrs of age. My biggest issue is with the retirement rules.

Hi and thanks for the comment, the visa rules are easy to follow and not too demanding, they can be achieved so easily. I do have a consultation service $10 for a face to face chat via WhatsApp to answer any questions you have and if you don't get the information you seek then there is no need to pay, be it one hour or 3 same price, this alone could save you 1,000's of Baht. My thai wife for 40 years and I live in rural Thailand. We moved here semi permanent initially. We back in Norway currently, but the plan of commute spending the summer time here is terminated. We are selling some of our stuff car and other things but not the house (backup ...) and time for selling is not right. We love being on the farm (no livestock yet) working and creating and developing the property. That is our dream come thru. Our oldest son are living here in Norway and is well settle and or youngest have relocated to Vancouver. We have put our rural life on "test" and we have conclude. We return to Thailand in september and we are not going back. We are already missing our rural home after 2 weeks, but will spend the time to sell out some of our stuff here. Great vid. Les and thank you some much for sharing and good advice. We bring 4 suitcases of stuff back in september and that`s it final. Europe is gone SHTF soon.

I'm amazed that you were able to consolidate your life down to one suitcase and a backpack. Most around that age would struggle to liquidate their lifetime of "possessions". Might be too personal, but it would be interesting to hear you reflect on your journey and growth as a person, ,considering the relationships, marriages, etc. that didn't work out. Thanks for the upload.

Les, almost every one of your vlogs is full of experiences learned, knowledge gained & a bucket full of common sense. It's all GREAT, yet the common sense part is difficult for many to replicate, because they need the same things about Thailand laying in front of them, time & time again...yet these same ones still make the same mistakes. It baffles me that many don't learn & I absolutely applaud you for your patience, in continually giving out consistent knowledge & common sense. I'm sure you've helped many & will continue to do so. Many haven't a clue about money & money management, such ones really need to think hard about moving out 9f their own country. These types almost always end up with nothing & yet they do it to themselves. I'll be spending most of my time in Thailand & using it as a base to travel. I'll also be spending some time per year in the UK summer months/the rainy season in Thailand. With that said & fortunately I'll not need or want to sell everything up, but I totally understand many that need to/want. Great vlog Les.

@RetiredandLivingthedream You can see it starting slowly over here too. I'm sure you keep up on the news. Things can end up being temporary here in the future too. Hordes of people not close to retirement age are flocking here and end up in questionable jobs positions and are making the news. It also Segway into them looking at taxing foreigners who are getting additional income here. ( Being discussed). Things are changing. You need to have a 2nd plan or as I call it escape option. Also a dreaded cancer plan.

I did exactly the same as you Les. Arrived three years ago with one suitcase and a backpack. Now have wife, we had been together for five years before i moved here, home, car, in fact everything and more i had in the UK. We are not rich but i have a couple of pensions so we are ok and are not extravagant anyway. I have more friends than i did in my own country, both farang and Thai and have never been happier. I hope never to set foot in the UK ever again. As a side note i just discovered i have had the wrong tax code since moving so aswell as freezing my state pension HMRC have been taxing me too much on my income. Apparently 37% of tax codes are incorrect so always worth checking. Gotta love 'em, incompetent doesn't begin to describe them. At least they are going to refund me. Can you pay it into my bank? i said. Oh no, we will have to send you a cheque they said! This is 2024 isn't it?😂

What a lifechanging decision! And if your getting rid of really expensive paid off items its a bit heartbreaking to watch. At least It was for us. We Moved here at the beginning of Covid time. Built a large home in the SE provinces. Durian country... Found after a year the boredom was really getting to me. Im not a partyer and dont need lots of contacts. But some sort of social interaction with foreignors really helps. It helps allot. Also the ability to access western food for a break and decent medical care vs a govt clinic. I have been traverling here since 1992 and as i mentioned, live here FT. Dont move out to the sticks unless your a lonesum kind of person to begin with.. The novelty will wear off quickly. Prices are catching up in Thailand. Living expenses aren't like in Europe or the States but their are bills. And you cant eat meat on a stick or Phad Thai all the time. "Real" health insurance is a whole nother duscussion. Take care all...

Wise words, I had the same feeling that if I moved to my wife's farm in Korat I was the only foreigner in the village, nothing there just farms, my wife would be expected to work on the family farm getting up at 5 am and working all day, leaving me alone all day. Beautiful area but as you say the boredom would set in for sure once the novelty wore off, living for free can cost a lot more on your mental health. We have it cracked here where we live a house near the coast and one in the country. Best of both worlds. Been together now for 8 years and still happy with each other, we do click together which is a good thing. Thanks for taking time to comment.

Thanks for the video Les, I’m 52 and thinking of selling it all and moving myself. 🇺🇸 is a mess now with inflation, Gun violence, politics and crazy costs. Just scared to pull the trigger and lots of anxiety for such a big change.

Only concern now tho is the new thai tax laws on bringing money in. I will use my WISE Card until I decide best approach, IE limit the amount of funds that hits a thai Bank account.

July they recon will have the information people require, I think Thailand may shoot it's self in the foot, being greedy to the golden goose ( Retired foreigners ) it will drive them away. We already spend a lot of money here and to tax them on the money they bring to spend without any extra benefit by paying tax is beyond belief the gains will be small but the loss of long stay tourists will lose them money, this is my thoughts on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

It's nice moving if you have a good reason to move, as always most people especially retires do it for love That's alright if you have good health and a good partner, if yo don't you,ll come a cropper I've only been in thailand a few years seen many loose everything So don't think coming on holiday is same as living there its not

I have also seen many not lose everything, but I agree guys can lose everything here. Try before you commit live here for at least 6 months then try a year then decide. Holiday and long term are like chalk and cheese.

This is ironic for me watching this as I am 54 and want to move to Thailand in the next few years. However, my Thai wife who has been living in Australia for 16 years is dead set against moving back to Thailand. She is not on her own either as most of her Thai friends here are of the same opinion. So it may end up being that we spend 3 or 4 months a year in Thailand during our Australian winter when I retire.

I have herd this before, the Thai girls get a taste of the good life, earning far more in your home country, far more than they can dream off in Thailand. This is a hard one thanks for pointing this out best wishes for your future plans.

If your thinking of retiring to thailand for your last 30 years of life if you have no pension, you need at least 600000 pounds that's 20 thousand a year and you've got to stick to that money, if not it won't last. This just amount you would mange on its not living it up in bar's every night. It all depends on the person's will power.
@RetiredandLivingthedream
@RetiredandLivingthedream 3 ай бұрын
I know people living on less than this amount and that includes me. I agree with your comment a persons will power, this is the key to survival here. Your future is in your hands. Thanks for your comment.

Hello gordypattersion .this amount is to retire there for 30 years .if you lived in Bangkok in a nice place you would want more.but if you live in Northern Thailand you could live on less. The only problem is most western people like their creature comfits and western food. If you don't have the money you won't be going for 30 years.
