I think yes you can make the income on the first month. Then if you start by selling a call in the stock has a decent drop it is going to be a struggle to keep selling calls after that. Now if the stock does Fall and you choose to still sell calls below your average cost that you paid for your shares it's still okay because if the price does rise and get there you can always roll the call to another week so you can avoid letting them get called away and so on and so forth. But then at that point you are no longer bringing in extra income if that happens because the credit that you are receiving it's actually compensating for the negative that the cover called from the previous week has had to endure as a result of the rolling because you had to sell a call on a stock that went down. So in other words you can sell a call for the first month and hope the stock goes up and get called away and keep doing that again and again but once the stock does goes down you are going to hit a point where you're not going to be able to make extra income until the stock goes back to its average cost and then you can start bringing in extra premium
@taddmansilla598
@taddmansilla598 10 күн бұрын
The story I’m telling myself is that your assessment is correct. Remember that premium is a proxy for risk. The higher the premium you collect the higher the risk is of being assigned. If the stock price drops a significant amount below your assigned price, to sell covered calls at the assigned strike may not make sense. I learned an expensive lessons years ago on snap selling cash secured puts. I’m still sitting on 600 shares after being assigned before they crashed in 2021. I figured if assigned I would sell covered calls. It fell so fast and furious back then, I didn’t have proper risk management in place. I have considered selling covered calls and chipping away at my avg cost with weekly premium, but Murphy’s law applies. I can roll up and out like you mentioned. After all, I’ve been sitting on 600 shares for a few years.

Yet another question is on option expiration length. I started selling put options in 2021/2022, not good timing. I sold monthly and quarterly options on TQQQ, collected $100k premium and I was assigned totally 15,700 shares in 2022. Average cost was $32. I was under deep water. At the beginning of 2023, the share price dropped to $15, numerous analysts and industrial leaders predicted Nasdaq would drop another 30% in 2023.. well, that implied TQQQ would go $2 or lower.. Jesus Christ.. but human being knows what, it turned out 2023 was a green year. There are yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and even daily options to play,,, in your opinion, which length is optimal?
@user-ms8kp2xc2i
@user-ms8kp2xc2i Ай бұрын
In my trading experience (not much), play this way has a few preconditions: 1) need capital. 2) you dont depend on that capital in option market for everyday living, anything could lose value if there is a strict timing requirement, you will have flexibility if the subject asset dont have to be immediately released. 3) dare enough, nothing comes free, no risk no gain. I like options more than stocks because time, risk and value are more explicitly quantilized.

I am still thinking about put credit spread.. if I use it to reduce the cash requirement, being a little bit more agressive on selling put, buying low strike put, and most importantly, don't increase the number of contracts significantly, so I have a choice of taking assignment or taking the loss depending on my judgement in a bad day... Will that bring me more profit? I cannot see much benefit... Did i miss something?

Hi, Henry. I started selling put option seriouly this year.. I do earn some money. However, I have to use a few million dollars as collateral to earn about 1% to 2% on monthly basis. The risk is obviously high, I was assigned many times in the past three months. Fortunately, it's a bull market, so far that hasn't caused big problem yet. I thought about using put credit spread to increase profit, but that involves leverage and I don't feel comfortable. So, I only play with my own money on simple cash secured put and covered call so far. My questions, 1) what's a reasonable profit expectations? And 2) what's the best stock/etf candidate to play simple put and covered call? Could you share your opinion Thanks
@taddmansilla598

You have a few million dollars to use as collateral for your cash secured puts? If you have that kind of cash in your account you should have portfolio margin account. What you said about having to use a few million dollars, is that an example statement or are you saying you are trading with a million dollar account?

I took a risk on AMZN April 26th 185 puts. Got massive premiums. I am usually a weekly put or call seller, so this one is a little out of my comfort zone. I’m thinking AMZN will pop a little after earnings. Either way I’ll either sell more puts if above 185, or sell covered calls if it takes a dump. Henry is right, selling options is the way to go, especially if you already have the capital.

Some investors play dividend paying stocks and bonds, such as T, VZ, MO, ARCC, MAIN, SUN, ET, SPHY, etc etc. Those are sweet if you bought them at disount price. Why not acqire them by selling their OTM put options? If they dont come, you earn premium. If they do come, you have a dscounted price. Usually, their price start going up a little bit a week or two before the ex-div day. You can sell them to gain, if they dont go up, wait the ex day to collect dividend. Of course, there is risk, but that risk is lower than buying those stocks in plain way.

BTW, many of my friends are investing in the real estate market. I studied that possibility, but i didnt see how could they earn money in the current market. A typical $1m priced condo in Boston can collect $4k rent per month, less $1.5k HOA/tax/insurance, only $2.5k left. Loan is 7%. Say, no mortgage and pay cash for it, but there is an interest loss of $4k per month for $1m value. How could this be a good investment... But there are numerous smart people doing that, they ,,, i dont know whats in their mind, probably expect condo price will go up and up and up...

Dumb question: Why do hedge funds and traders buy put options to hedge their position rather than just using a stop loss? The only reason I can think of is to protect against the position having a huge drop after market hours.
@user-ms8kp2xc2i

Buy put option is equivalent of shorting a stock. When stock price drops big time, it put option soars. If you expect price drop and want to take advantage of that, buy its put option. It is way safer than naked short.
@Robert-di3kv
@Robert-di3kv Ай бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. Stop loss can be triggered intra day and then one is stopped out of the position. Stop loss positions are visible, so there are people that will sell down to the stop loss to take out the position at a discount then the stock goes right back up. Now one is stuck with a taxable sale of the stock and one no longer holds the position. Buying a put gives the downside protection without those negatives other than the cost of the put. It’s like buying insurance on your car you hope you don’t need it but if you do it’s there. But if you don’t need it, you don’t go out and purposely crash your car do you?

Selling options is incredibly easy-- which is one way to get yourself in trouble. Also, it doesn't take a lot of money with a margin account, but you do have to manage the options you have out there and close, roll, or whatever as needed. But yes a larger account will have larger margin, and it does make it easier. But even with a reasonably small account you could make decent extra money with options, just not on the scale you can with a large account where getting assigned would be less problematic.
