We have found that the only thing that stays the same is that things are going to change. I think that it is great that you two have realized that you dreams have shifted and had the courage to change with them. The thing that a lot of people seem to be forgetting (from what I can see) is that if vanlife doesn't work out the way you are hoping that it does you can always come back and convert another bus. Without change and the growth it brings with it, we might as well be dead =)

I like the rustic look and your schoolie has hit all the right buttons for me. It was topped off when you put the wood stove in it. You could hit every RV dealer in the country and none of them would have a wood stove for heat. They might have an electric simulated fire place but not a real wood stove. You have a virtual cabin in the woods on wheels. I have loved it. Thank you for sharing your build and travels with us. You two are a great couple and a lot of that comes out in your schoolie. I wish you the very best as you transition to your next phase!! I love hearing Tiff singing the closing song on each of your postings! Don't change that when you change your abode on wheels, please!! You two take good care of each other!! Don't ever neglect that!!!

Hi Zac and Tiff. Never had a schoolie or a van. But my cousin Bob and his wife have a big 40 foot pusher diesel motor home that I have spent a lot a time with. They have an awning that quickly can roll out from the right side that gives instant covered outdoor space that works great for sun protection and rain. Allows them a place to set-up. They have these polypropolene? (don't know) outdoor carpets that they put out for their outdoor floor surface under the roll-out awning. The door to entry is on the right side, so it helps keep dirt and mud out. Pretty fast to set up. I love your channel. You are a wonderful couple. Fast set-up of the immediate outdoor space might be real useful for the van. You probably already know this but just putting it out there. I was impressed over the years how fast we could be outdoors under cover and not standing in mud or dirt. The rolled up polypropolene carpet fits in their outdoor lockers. Don't know how to accomodate in a van. Just my two cents. Good Job you both. Regards, Chuck in Wildomar, CA soon to move to Florida.

Don't do a van! Yeah, down-size for sure, but vans are too much a compromise, been there done that, learned the lesson. I built a Sprinter but the curved walls are frustrating during construction, and claustrophobic and space-robbing when finished. Had a good run with it, but now building a 4x4 Mitsubishi Canter with an expedition camper box on the back. Nice square sides makes construction so much easier, and 4x4 gets you to the places you've said you're missing out on in the skoolie. Doesn't have to be a Canter, there's plenty of chassis choices (F550 etc), - you could even get lucky and find one of those 4x4 shortie skoolies. And with an expedition-style camper, the US becomes just a small part of the world!

I definitely think there’s something to having a new vehicle. My Ford experiences have been great (two Ecoboosts, no issues whatsoever). I think the question will be whether there is some threshold of minimalism below which long term satisfaction is hard to sustain. I’m super-eager to watch the van build and the next adventures!

I don't think the factory has started building AWDs yet so delivery probably won't happen until after the first of the year. I'd get your order placed ASAP. I bought a 2018 high roof extended and had it converted by Quadvan. Back then AWDs were just a rumor. I'm happy with it because I've had 4WD pickups most of my life and don't think I would have been happy with an AWD. It sounds like you know the difference. Most people don't. Recently read that the factory swivel isn't available with the power seat. I would definitely get a power driver's seat so you can get comfortable on long drives. There are aftermarket swivels that will work on a power seat. There's a larger fuel tank option available on the 2020, that's a must have. I would join the Ford Transit USA Forum if you haven't already done so. There's a member named CrewVanMan. He's a salesman at Matt Ford in Kansas City where the Transit factory is located. He only deals with Transits and knows more about the Transit than most salesman. I just subscribed to your channel and I'm looking forward to watching your van build.

This is like the second or third couple/family I have seen that has sold off their vehicle with less than 24 months into it. What's everyone doing? I've had a bus-loved the hell out of it. I've had RV rentals which are yummy! If you are looking for speed with options but really do not want to lose the space, a truck/trailer combo works better. Ever sit in a space the size of tent for hours due to bad weather? I have. Not fun. Would rather have a root canal without drugs. Anyway, good luck on your adventure w/ the van. Not my thing but to each thine own. We are waffling between an Class C upgrade RV or a Class A with slide outs. If we found a bus for sale mostly done, we'd could do that too.

Instead of the AWD Ford Transit, consider a Quigley converted 4x4 Transit. They use factory original Ford parts from Ford's pickup trucks and have a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty. They can be serviced at any Ford dealer. The Quigley 4x4 is superior to AWD in terms of traction off road. The AWD Transit will not be lifted at all, so no extra ground clearance for off road excursions. I believe the Quigley's have a mild lift. There is a number of Ford dealers across the country that carry inventory of Quigley converted 4x4 Transits. I don't know where you are right now but, here is a link to Newburg Ford in Newburg OR. They have 17 Quigley converted Transits in stock right now. The inventory is the lowest I've seen, I guess because it's the end of the model year. They usually have 40+ Quigley's in stock. There are other dealers across the US too. www.newbergford.com/new-commercial-inventory?SolrBody=Van%204X4

I deleted my comment: I didn't actually finish watching the video to see a short school bus was out of the question. Have you considered a 2019 Ford transit (gas engine) short school bus, all the benefits you want PLUS extra space after it's all built out. (Probably not awd though) BUT you could take it to QUIGLEY for a ford authorized 4wd conversion. (Not cheap)

I honestly think that you're going to find that the sprinter van isn't do any better than 55 or 60 once you get it converted. You're probably going to be doubling it's weight by the time you finish the conversion, and I don't think that ecobust v-6 is going to be able to pull it as fast as you think down the highway and up steep grades. I realize that you want to get away from a diesel engine, but I think you find that you're better off with a super duty, if it is available. They have proven power and durability, plus they can be serviced pretty much anywhere. The eco-bust will last you maybe 5 years then start falling apart, then you'll have to make the decision is it worth putting a new engine in it or is the body too ragged out. Newer is not always better. The newer the vehicle the more flimsy built and disposable it is. This applies to all brands. Another thing you will find is that the sprinter van isn't going to handle very well in windy conditions. I think you would find that a short bus from the late 90's to the early 2000's with a super duty and Allison transmission would be much more suited to what you want to do. It will handle better, be just as easy to park, and be sturdier built than a sprinter van. Age is not what you need to worry about. Buses are built to be durable and long lasting. What you do need to be concerned about is how many miles are on the odometer and how well it was maintained. As far as the speed issue is concerned, they're governed to not go any faster than 55 mph, you can get around that by adjusting the governor. Anyway, please understand that I am not trying to tell you what to do but merely offering advice based on my own experiences and observations. I of course respect your need to make your own decisions on what is best y'all, and I wish y'all the best in this new chapter in your life.

Um... the governer is set to 85 in my 170wb Sprinter. I routinely get it that high, even with a full build-out, full tanks, etc. This van is a beast.
@andreawisner73585 жыл бұрын
Reading between the lines, although barely stated, running and maintaining the bus as well as a separate car is super-expensive. FWIW, I knew that bus + car was not going to be sustainable. They could have chosen to put a 150-200 cc scooter on the back and that might have been better. Maybe they can do that with the van. The van will heat up a lot faster in the sun than the bus would. When you go into a grocery store or leave the dogs in the van for even longer you're going to need to leave all the windows open and the fan on. Even better would be to have an AC system separate from the engine. But that's going to take a ton of solar. Don't be surprised if people break your windows out if you leave the dogs inside even for just a few minutes. As to the diesel problem - you can get a small shuttle bus built on a Ford or Chevy gasoline van body. That's a little more spacious than a van, and some fit into a parking space. And you can get one just a few years old, not 20. Congratulations.
