We bought our new house in 1986 from a local builder who went to high school with my husband. He was just starting out and hired his best friends who were framers, drywallers, plumbers, and everyone knew everyone else and their dogs. It was the best built home I've ever lived in.

In my area of NZ we have several local, experienced, qualified and competent builders. The only downside is they are extremely popular so they have a long wait list. Oh, and to follow the other comment, our builders are bringing back apprentices, which makes them even more popular.

They can't even handle "minimum requirement"! That is why when we built our house, I did all the work myself just me and the wife except for the concrete, rough plumbing, and HVAC. I know this isn't an option for many but it is well worth it if you can. I watched all the inspectors, and it was quite eye opening. Most of them didn't do much more than walk around and say OK...good to go. I think during the whole build process the inspectors collectively were there less than 20 minutes.

Man I feel for that poor family. I had a crap builder but nothing like theirs. The stress when we built was incredible and I can't imagine what they went through especially the pregnant wife with all the extra pregnancy hormones and feelings she was going through. I didn't realise how stressed my wife was until we got the Final Payment check from the bank. She closed the car door after leaving the bank and burst into tears. Never wanted to kill someone so much in my life for bringing that on her. I imagine the husband would have also wanted to rain pain down on those basturd builders for the stress and hurt they have caused his family. I hope they eventually get there house fixed and get a decent job done on it but who am I kidding. Keep fighting the _good fight_ Cy because you are one of the few who can and are able to bring these shonky builders out into the light of day and expose their corrupt asses. My deepest sympathies to this family and all those other families who have their money, hopes and dreams stolen from them by these shonky r-sole builders.

I bought a flipped house and didn’t use my guy and relied on the realtor inspector. HUGH mistake!!! This is what I found and what I had to fix. More than a dozen three prong outlets that were not grounded. The ceiling in the master bedroom room sagging. A leaky hot water tank. This one was my favorite! The builder used a 8’X6” piece of poplar on the edge of the tub and paint it a high gloss white to make it look like porcelain/marble. Independent inspector is the best move to protect yourself.

Flippers are also notorious for roofing over old roofs. That is their style...slap some paint and cover-up issues to get it sold. They focus on cosmetics.. They rip 3 things, bathrooms, kitchens and the floors, but only if absolutely necessary. The rest gets make-up. They paint and mop then raise the price to the top of the market and troll for idiots.

The people who purchase these new homes need to bring a lawyer with them to closing as well as approve of the contract before they sign agreements to purchase. As much as I hate lawyers , I've always used one when purchasing a home * * i didn't use one when we had a home built in the valley , luckily we had very few problems and they were taken care of(pulteeee). Anyway, I recall several real-estate transactions that we either negotiated a better price or their was "hold back money" until whatever discrepancy was resolved. . I know the same applies for new construction as I've been in the trades for longer than I want to admit and I've seen it happen to builders for a multitude of reasons (unfinished landscape due to snow....)

The builders are bad enough but I can't help thinking that the city inspectors are either inept, on the take or both. It's another example of our elected officials not representing the people. If you're the mayor I'd be demanding explanations from the city engineering department. If I'm a legislator I'd be demanding law changes that stopped closings prior to the builder meeting their obligations. By the way everyone, this is happening EVERYWHERE in the country.

I know it's a very different building style in the US, but the way American roofs are built just weirds me out. It seems the insulation is either just a huge mess of shredded newspapers on the floor, or spray foam dripping everywhere like stalactites in a cave. And it's all held up by pieces of scrap wood nailed together. And neither of these things are even what's wrong in the inspection.

This is the american dream! Spending the bare minimum on the bill of materials and another bare minimum on the cheapest & fastest subs they can find; so they can turn around and sell you a polished piece of shit for $1M. I doubt Toll Brothers put in 70% of that houses cost into materials and a labor. If you're lucky they spent 35% of that on materials and labor and just pocketed the rest. Don't worry we can just blame the inflation what are they doing to do? What recourse besides putting them on blast on the internet do you have? If house sinking isn't a good enough reason to back out of a deal, what is? Pretty sure the next step up would be considered an act of god and not be covered either.

I replaced old aluminum windows with low E vinyl windows around 1998. Isn't so called vinyl a form of PVC? They are still in great shape. I think the installer was the key to be honest. Are these broken ones some cheap grade of PVC?

Many builders form a limited liability company to build one house....yours. Then when the house is sold the company is dissolved and a new company is formed for the next house. Even though all parties in the new building firm are the same as the company that built your house...you can't sue them.,...and the original company has no assets. The scam goes right through up the line to the billionaires controlling the politicians, the legislation...and our lives.

These Shady Builders should have their Licenses REVOKED! They are "Pound Wise, Penny Foolish" when it comes to construction they hire the cheapest labor which ends up costing them far more in the long run because of incompetence, lack of oversight, rushed work and improper supplies. They obviously don't care about their reputations either. Part of the problem is many of them are not local so they have NO community ties OR they ARE local and they have "friends in office" or are used to greasing some palms here and there to "get things done". They and their families should be forced to live in these very shoddy houses they build. That would straighten them up really fast!

People do realize this sort of shoddy work and quality is ubiquitous across all areas of the economy correct? In fact the building Trades are probably near the top of the quality ratings. Your Hamburger has rat hair, feces and so many additives you would fall asleep before the list ended. Besides most of the baddies happen way before the cow is even slaughtered. If you are an ignorant consumer there is a scam ready to service your needs. If you are shopping not expecting to get scammed you are doing it wrong. Odds are extreme the people you are trading for are out to f*ck you. No house is perfect but the problems seen in these inspector videos indicate a total lack of concern and scams a plenty. The referees are incompetent and probably paid off. They are scamming the taxpayers and buying public. Have a nice day.

📐Wow!!! Good example of Speed process in construction without any care of the product.🤨 Most consumers don't know that Improper installation of materials can void out the manufacturer warranty of the product in a lot of cases. AND... I cringe when I hear " Tol brothers". 😬
