I did a ton of these in the early 80s as flat rate kid and probably only replace ignitions when I had to replace the broken column part when car was stolen most of time it was for broken wires and switches the plastic was cheap when it was new .Your channel locks killed me I would impact that snug that hit it with hammer and it would pop off . Your a better teacher than me I would do it my head and forget to say it out loud and hope they seen that .

You just made my day! I was searching and searching and your video showed the horn buzzer piece. I was literally pulling my hair out trying to find how that goes back in. I got the new tumbler back in and the key won't come out. No wonder why the previous owner broke the key off in the old tumbler. Now I just need to figure out how to get the key out of the new tumbler and put everything back together. Thank you so much for your video.

Jason, this column looks identical to the one on my 1989 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale. The car was a gift from a friend who passed away in 2004. He bought it in Monroe, LA which is due west of Jackson, MS. It runs perfect, but I did replace the air in 2014, which is needed here in SE TN. Fascinating video, and a job well done! Thanks for sharing.

Jeff Moss never used one of those, I’ve got another box of all this stuff somewhere in the back, this was my last “get all the necessary stuff together and keep it in the red metal box I don’t use” (used to keep in ammo can also, in fact the other stuff may still be in one) I have some old Blackhawk (I think) stuff too. Do they still sell the internal parts for the steering columns? My dad’s 1990 C1500 has been sitting in our lot for over 15 years and I would like the get the steering wheel and the column components rebuilt so that I could move it out of the way but he told me that all the internal parts broke and he threw them away and I have a feeling that is going to be a problem due to how old it is.

Hi - I don't know if you can answer this - but I took a steering column apart on a 1980s GM vehicle to replace the wiper switch. I took it apart a little further than you did - I took the collar off around the ignition switch also so I could get the wiper switch out. I was careful when I did this and I put all of the parts back together. Well, when I got it all back together, the steering column doesn't lock in the lock position, the horn doesn't work, and the turn signals don't cancel. I checked the lock plate is like 1/16" higher than it used to be, even with the little circular holding clip in there. I added a washer above the lock plate to push it down ever so slightly more so everything that didn't work before will work now. But I shouldn't have to do this! Does anyone know what went wrong here? I did not leave any parts out and it all seemed to go back together OK - so I can't figure out why there was a problem now. For now the additional washer makes it work, but I know that isn't right, it shouldn't be like that.

Hey buddy I just ran across your video today and I have a 1981 Chevy 1Ton 4x4 that we ended up loosing the keys to it!! If I was able to get mine apart and get the numbers and letters of the switch would you be able to make me a key for it?? Or would it be better to just get a new lock switch for it?? Any help would definitely be appreciated!!
@selock3 жыл бұрын
Any locksmith should be able to make you the key by the switch numbering if it has it on there. 10+ years ago it would have been a common very inexpensive replacement part at any auto parts place but last time I looked around, out of curiosity, I noticed either no stock/extremely high prices/long lead time. It’s a standard GM 6 cut bolt on switch though

My horn buzzer broke during the fix, so I threw it away and was going to roll with no horn, but when I put everything back together my horn stays ON! It wont go off unless I unplug the battery.
@mattbrunson81415 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see that is the key minder that broke by reading the comments. Well I don't know what the hell I did with the horn but it stays on as soon as I compress the spring down and put the c-clip on, basically when the brass ring under the white plastic touches the little brass rod that pushes in and out.

Was hoping you would take it apart further than that. My column is very similar in my 87 Chevrolet celebrity. It is a euro sport edition. My ignition is messed up in mine. The key was jammed in the ignition ignition ignition would not turn. Took it apart to discover the arm that is connected to the ignition turn gear was bent on the inside. The Tilt bolts were loose was the main reason I had took it apart one time already but when I tightened it up I discovered that the labor was bent. I'd like to send it to you or someone that can rebuild it. I'm at my wit's end with it. I've had it apart four times.
