Just bought an 89 k1500 and has a sloppy column. Previous owner put a tiny grant gt wheel on it and first thing I thought was that they left the main spring out. Pulling the wheel to put a factory replacement on so now I'll go in and check those bolts, totally forgot about those being an issue so thanks for the heads up. Fyi, now that you reminded me of this, we used to take those screws out one at a time and put one drop of blue locktite on to keep them from backing out again.

A lot of guys on the forums are having them back off again even with blue loctite. Many are opting for red now.

i recommend blue loctight on those e8 bolts. remove one at a time. clean the threads of the old locking compound/oxides then apply a few drops of blue to the clean bolt, install, torque and never worry about the lose wheel again. the messed up part is i have all the tools burred since ive done these a few times over the last 4 decades . great video so you know what tools to dig out! i forgot about the pivot pin tool.

Yes the wiring can be a bit tight. Did you disconnect the Turn signal connector underneath the dash? Also those Wires may be zip tied to the steering column

Okay my issue is on my 90 S10 blazer is the center shaft moves in and out and up and down . I have the filte column just like this but mine doesnt move like yours , it's only that center shaft part that the steering wheel bolts on too . So idk how to fix that problem never seen it before. I can go under the hood and literally pull in and out of the steering shaft that goes to the gear box and it moves out there so idk if my column is fucked up or rag joint or something else never seen one like the issue I have before go bad

What's all the plastic pieces inside that fell out when I pulled the housing off ... (watched your video the other day ... tackled the job yesterday ... and now ... have the hard part of trying to put it back together) ... did not see where they came from or how they were oriented within the housing ... so ... at this point ... looking for schematics and other videos to help find what I need to properly finish the job ... Fyi ... I have a 91' Chevy G20 van ... similar ... yet ... different compared to your vehicle ... Thanks for any help you can offer ... or suggest other sites to view.

Time line 6:43 “ if you get enough wire out, you should be able to slide hosing out” I have short wires. What is the work around? Wires are to shirk to pull green and white plastic mechanisms out so the outer black housing cannot pull out.

Getting late. I’ll look around tomorrow but I was trying to see it I could remove those 10 wires or how ever many to that piece. Maybe could get under the dash near the bricks and steering column and see if there’s any more wire to push up In electronics, they call that extra wire a service loop which allows you extra room to service equipment or electronics. There really is not much wire, it’s pretty short.

No videos that really get into that part. EDITED; I did what you said and put the tilt lever back in and by using that i switched it into the adjust tilt position and then got it out. THX

I worked for Chevy/Cadillac in the mid 80s to early 90s. I've done it a few times. I don't remember it being this hard. Once I got the steering wheel off I tightened the bolts and that was about it. I used a gear puller and it worked fine. Didn't have to take out the ignition switch or anything else. I'm pretty taken back by what I just saw and I've gotta do this on an 89 Cadillac. Fun, fun, fun. I think the last one I did was an 80s Buick LeSabre. It was pretty easy. This is rocket science compared to the ones I've done. Crazy

I have 88 k1500. I had the column bolts (4) tightened years back, I swore the 4 outside torx bolts were way back next to firewall, we could only get to three. Does that sound right? Anyway, years later, broke up with that boyfriend, so took truck to shop for same repair. First thing out of parking lot, I noticed turn signals wouldn't hold in the on position (ie, you had to hold them), then getting home, and tilting steering wheel up, I could hear and feel something broke. Now turn signal wand is all floppy, ie no way to dim/bright the headlights. I'm pretty unhappy. What part did they likely not get installed in correct position, or improperly indexed? Pictures helpful. Thank you!!!

Hey there. Well to me, it sounds like there is a couple/several things they could have done/not done when it all was reassembled. Either it was a rush job and they were just trying to hurry up and get it out the door to get paid, OR they had no clue on what they were doing inside there in the first place, unfortunately. Or heck, maybe all of the above lol.. there's no telling with shops today. I legitimately don't see how in the world some of these sleazy rats in my town stay in business, with doing shoddy work and half-ass/hillbilly-fying most of the vehicles people bring to them. But it's helped me out a little from time to time since some of said people bring their vehicles to me to fix after those shops mess them up. It's pitiful really.

Just completed this one! Took a full working day including running to CanTire to rent the wheel puller. Truck I was working on:(1992 GMC Sierra 3500) Few things to note for those trying this that I feel like this video glanced over: Get your kick panel off so you can feed the wires further up the column, mine were in a retaining clip down there, made life easier. The housing for your hi beam switch (part of the turn signal comes apart into 2 peices, these were a pain to reassemble, make sure your hi beam switch has the little metal rod inside the receiving ?switch?. That’s again accessible from under the kick panel When you get to the Torx screws, where the ignition cylinder is there will be a plastic part with two copper contacts coming off it that’s in the way of the screws backing out. BE CAREFUL and pull this plastic peice halfway out, do not pull it all the way thru. YES it will be awkward to get the screws past. It is much harder to reassemble this part afterwards. If you do accidentally pull it out, when you put the housing back on, put the retaining clip in halfway and the plastic part with the copper halfway in from the opposite side so it sits right in there. Fist time doing this one and had no help, it was pretty darn difficult I have to say. The parts going back together were always fighting with you to seat correctly. Got it done and it works though! If you’re debating tackling this one, I’d recommend setting aside Atleast 10 hours and maybe getting a quote from a shop, it’s a very involved process. And of course thank you Aaron Hines for giving me the roadmap to getting this one done.

More seriously though, my comment was directed to those mechanically inclined folk who don’t work full time in the trade, but are blessed to own one of these beautiful old square body GM Trucks. Theyre old enough that they’re sure to need repairs, and every weekend mechanic has to make the call, is this fix one for the shop or one for the driveway? Ultimately that decision should come down to A) how safe will the vehicle be if you fuck it all up and break stuff? Can you detect those problems in the safety of a test ride or will your wheel falloff on the highway (not likely but using hyperbole to get my point across) and B) are you ready to do the work, maybe for the first time, and use your previous skills to solve problems along the way? I didn’t do this to save a dime, I did it because I like my truck, and I like feeling involved in it’s upkeep. I think some people may be trying to avoid a trip to the shop, but myself and others I know who like old trucks are watching videos like these because they teach you how to fix something that’s broken. Your gate keeping, and I understand the sentiment. People with no experience whatsoever are gonna get lost on this one and have a bad time. But why scare them off? Everybody’s gotta start somewhere! My comment was a disclaimer, trying to give people a relative idea of what they’re getting themselves into before the wheels off and you’re staring into the abyss. Instead of all this negative BS, provide sound advice. I’m certainly no pro, but I’m mechanically inclined, and I started with a sway bar replacement years ago, trynna save a dime, realized it felt pretty fuckin great to fix something. You tell people they can’t do something and they just might believe you, tell them they’re not ready yet but they could and you might inspire another person to join the trade, or buy an old car as a restoration project! Why keep others from discovering something you like too?

I REALLY need help with my gmc truck and it seems like No one in my area can help me. Time is REALLY relevant at the moment and I would be so grateful and appreciative if you could help me. The steering bar thing under the hood completely broke and I have no idea how to rig it to get any kind of steering to even lead it or what I really need to do is be able to steer it a few down hill blocks to my home. Also I have almost no help and have no idea what I'm doing. Aaaand go! LoL all jokes aside I'm panicking and my truck could be getting towed as I type. Thank you! I hope!
