Semaglutide (Wegovy) - A New Treatment for Weight Loss. 20 minute Drug Review.

This video reviews the new use of the drug semalgutide (Wegovy) for the treatment of weight loss in obese and overweight individuals. Semaglutide is given as a once a week injection under the skin.
Semaglutide is also known by the brand name Ozempic which is used for Type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide is an injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It acts as an incretin hormone that plays a role in appetite, digestion, gastric emptying, and satiety. Dosage should be slowly titrated upward to avoid gastrointestinal side effects. Instructions on how to administer the drug via a pen device will be covered. Semaglutide should not be used by anyone with a family history of thyroid cancer. In clinical studies, semaglutide resulted in a 15% decrease in body weight from baseline. The drug is expensive, with a monthly cost of $1300.

I've been on semiglutide for about a month. It's a huge positive game changer on how I now look at food and the big negatives of processed sugar. So far I've gone from 223 pounds to 208 pounds. Fifteen pound weight loss is a lot. I have much less in body aches and more energy, clearer skin. I never want to go back to my sugar binges again, like I said, semiglutide is a "game changer".

I get my shot at a spa where they do Botox and skin care. I’ve been on it for two months and haven’t lost weight but I can tell my body has slimmed down. I have no bad side effects. The one thing I love is I’m fuller quicker and I don’t crave food like I did before. I get hungry I eat until I’m full and I don’t have a problem stopping. Which is very odd for me. I’m a mom of 4 and very active . I pay $50 a shot or $200 a month.

Make sure you are getting the real drug please. This medication is very costly

Someone who probably has insurance approval for this drug is paying $25 a month for 4 shots and selling it to you at huge markup. It's a prescription drug, you can't just get it at a spa. I'd be very very concerned. If you meet the criteria please reach out to your doctor to get yourself a real prescription and ensure you're getting the right medicine and dosage.

In the SUSTAIN-6 trial, semaglutide showed a statistically significant increased risk of new onset or worsening diabetic retinopathy (DR), 3% vs 1.8% placebo. Most of these patients who showed DR had preexisting retinopathy at baseline. Further studies are needed to determine if there is a causal relationship and if the DR improves with longer term treatment. Several prior studies in diabetics have shown that a sudden drop in blood glucose can worsen DR. When starting semaglutide, a baseline eye exam should be performed, especially in patients with a history of DR.

My friend said it made her deathly ill. Is this common with everyone? She was throwing up like crazy. the pharmacist told me it depends where you inject it. Is this true?

No, it doesn't depend on which subcutaneous area you inject it in. As long as you're doing it as directed, your body will metabolise it the same. Thigh, stomach, buttock, etc. Much more likely is that she isn't tolerant to it and could try a similar drug (there are many more now). Even more likely, from what you're describing, is that she was put on a high dose to start with by her doctor, and was not slowly titrated up over a month as is recommended. Bodies need time to adjust to medication. If injected incorrectly, for example, intravenously, any subcutaneous solution could make one horribly ill. But you'd have to be trying very hard to get it that wrong. I would find a new pharmacist.

Novo’s current focus targets commercial coverage; they will pursue broader Medicare/Medicaid coverage in the long term. A lot depends on whether payors view the use of Wegovy as a lifestyle medication for weight loss or views it as a treatment for obesity as a disease.
