I haven't been in Mexico during Semana Santa y Pascua, except when I was going to the UDLA in Cholula, Puebla waaaaaaaaay back in '83, when I started college at 22! My age aside, the Kennons' shots of PDLR--or Reforma--reminds me of how quasi-desolate The Zocalo, downtown, Anzures and Polanco looked when I arrived on Christmas Eve of '01. The Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, however, was buzzing with activity and pilgrims--peregrinos--walking the last 1/2 kilometer or so, on their knees until reaching the sanctuary of both chapels. Sorry, I didn't mean to digress, but I am a chatterbox on all things Mexico City. Viva Mexico!

Go to Coyoacan for Semana Santa there is celebration out there. Many people go to beaches on a week vacation. Or On the weekends of Semana Santa the people disappear from the city taking the family to go places outside the city, places as Cuernavaca, Xocimilco, different places to swim in Morelos, some just go to "parques" like El parque de Chapultepec or Xocimilco, you will find people at the Malls also, and many go to Churches. Yes, you are right it is very lonely, but remember that people does not work on Semana Santa and Reforma is a Work Area , so they go to "pasear".

Greetings from ice cold Minnesota! Greg and Hillary I recommend you to watch the Catholic celebrations in this Holly Week. there are several churches that have special events like the Last Supper, Viernes Santo en Ixtapalapa, la Quema de los Judas y el Domingo de Resureccion. Even if you are not Christians you can have the experience to watch these celebrations in Mexico.

When I used to live in CDMX, the best weeks to enjoy the city were Semana Santa and Xmas-New Year. You can go anywhere pretty quick. Enjoy and relax Güeros

That Friday Coyoacán was full! I'm from cdmx and I've never take L7. When I use the public bus I try to use it when there's not a lot of people. The busses crepps me out :(

I try to arrive in DF on Holy Thursday in early evening so i can see all the processions with Jesus in the crown of thorns with the purple cloak escorted by Roman soldiers with torches through the streets as the taxi takes me from the airport. Then on Good Friday the burning of the effigies of Judas and Satan. Then the big fiesta that Mexicans have that night of all nights. Then on Easter Sunday I love to hit a couple churches and walk around. I love Semana Santa in DF. You are correct the Turibus is packed, but the rest of the city is nice and empty, but BOOM the Capitalinos return with a vengeance by Sunday evening / Monday morning. PS the Turibus is something I HIGHLY recommend for new visitors to DF it is pure tourist, but tons of really useful info and getting one's bearings is priceless.

Lol it really is a luxury for all of us who decide to stay here during Semana Santa. And yes, most Mexicans eat ketchup with their pizza, it's weird, I know. You guys should try Alex Pizza! I've been meaning to take those new metro busses! Gotta check it out!! And yes, Reforma is pretty slow during that video. The "Truer truest test" would have been if you checked it out at around 6pm, that's when all the "godines" get off work. I chuckled when you saw the squirrel. They are so used to getting fed that they get super close!

You probably missed the best of Semana Santa in Mexico city, wich i think is the way of the Cross live. We are a community of hispanics in Arkansas and from a few years back we are making the way of the Cross live and actually many anglos are linking it for not seen this so often, but im glad you liked the city almost alone

Semana santa in Mexico City is a great time to explore the city. Now, shopping, no, many places are going to be closed. Thursday is when the mass exodus starts. The highway to Acapulco, and other roads will be packed going out. Look out on Sunday cause thats when everyone is on the way back. Monday, everything will be back to normal.

Everyone leaves CDMX to go the beaches, lakes or to be with their families in other states during this time. Your old home town PV just reported 100% occupancy. This is around 120k hotel rooms are taken by Mexican tourists. And this is just PV, in general all big beach towns all around Mexico are fully booked with national tourists. Enjoy the city and yes reforma av is empty except for a few tourists and hard working people that weren't allowed to leave work.

@Kinetic Kennons - I've been to Teotihuacan twice. Both times a single day would not have been enough. Second time I saw the laser light show - it's a must! Don't go without staying and seeing it! Es una ciudad católica...y mucha gente hace caso , son días de reflexión... Mucha gente participa en los eventos eclesiásticos y por lo mismo es cero fiesta..son días de "guardar ",así dicen...significa días de estar en paz..., en casa....mi abuela es muy católica y participa esta semana EN todos los eventos. El jueves pasado que es la procesión del silencio en la colonia Roma es impresionante... Todos caminan en silencio alrededor de la colonia con velas en la mano y al ritmo de un tambor adelante de todos llevan un Jesucristo crucificado y muerto y atrás la virgen Maria y a Amaría Magdalena llorando....como esas tradiciones son muy interesantes y te llenan el alma....hoy domingo de gloria...después de resucitar sube al cielo... En fin...los que no...pues se van a la playa a emborracharse y ver a las gringas en bikini y sus locuras de los sprint breakers. Y para muchos es su única oportunidad de salir con la familia. Por eso la mitad de la ciudad se va...ya que el 80% de la gente no es de aquí, de nacimiento me refiero y salen a sus ciudades a visitar a sus familias. Saludos

As a Catholic I would like to think that most people were in church on Good Friday in Mexico City… However that's probably a bit fool hearty… That having been said, I do know that a good majority of the people who weren't working are actually in church... good Friday is very much a fast day for all Catholics all the way up to Easter Sunday… So I wouldn't expect to see a lot of food vendors out. If you wanted to see crowds of people I would go to the metropolitan Cathedral or the Basilica of our lady of Guadalupe…I promise you it will be absolutely jammed and you probably won't get into either one of them
