Seminar premiered on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 20, 2011 and closed on May 6, 2012. Alan Rickman originated the role of the lead character, Leonard. Jeff Goldblum replaced Rickman as Leonard on April 1, 2012. The production was directed by Sam Gold and featured original music by John Gromada. This production was nominated as Best Play by the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League, but did not earn any Tony Award nominations.
Set in present-day New York City, Seminar follows four young writers - Kate, Martin, Douglas, and Izzy - and their professor, Leonard. Each student has paid Leonard $5,000 for a ten-week writing seminar to be held in Kate's Upper West Side apartment. As tensions arise and romance falls, they clash over their writing, their relations, and their futures.

I took my family to New York for a vacation in March 2012 when my children were 6 and 8. I knew Alan Rickman was appearing in "Seminar" on Broadway, so on our first night in town we waited at the stage door for Mr. Rickman to come out. He spoke to both of my children asking them if the had seen the play and then, looking over to me, said "Hope not!" He kindly signed autographs for my children while asking them if they liked Harry Potter and even using his "Snape" voice to tell my daughter to "look up from the ground" when she shyly looked down while answering his questions. It has been nearly 10 years since that evening and my children still talk about the experience! He was a nice man and an incredible talent who was taken from us much too soon!

Yes really thank you it makes me cry because I never got the chance to see him or even asking for autographs outside from him. By the time he died I was 15 I couldn't go with my friends like other lids to see people on Broadway or legends like himself I am really grateful to this footage

I feel exactly the same way. We're both 19 now, I'm almost sure. Still not over it and probably never will be. But that's ok. We have Alan by stage, by screen, and in our hearts. He lives on.

Thank you so much for posting this. You did an excellent job. I would not have seen this any other way. The week Alan died was the worst week of my life. I only did. I lose my favorite actor but I also lost my favorite musician. Glenn Frey I was paralyzed with grief, I couldn’t believe something so horrible could happen so quickly. But thank you for this a good way to remember Alan.

Вау! Вау! Вау! Огромная - преогромная благодарность за видео и за субтитры! Спектакль просто на одном дыхании! И смешно, и грустно, и правда жизни - все здесь. Алан великолепен и неподражаем, но и молодые актеры почти не уступают. Иногда правда мне казалось, что это Снейп и взрослый Гарри Поттер выясняют отношения: в стиле преподавания Леонарда и Снейпа много общего. 🙂 Такая ностальгия. Это действительно восторг, спасибо. Правда, немного смутило, что женские типажи в пьесе - девушки легкого поведения из корыстных соображений, а вот настоящие творцы и таланты - это мужчины. Нам показывают, что вот так женщины обычно делают карьеру - просто раздвигают ноги перед нужными людьми. Плюс покоробила насмешка над феминистками.

Singulier. Vraiment pas mal comme cheminement d'histoire. On devine parfois puis on est surpris par un dénouement puis un autre... et un final auquel on n'avait pas songé. Et si... on écoutait les critiques pour mieux se reconstruire, pour aller plus loin. Je suis une rickmaniac mais si cela avait mauvais, je l'aurais dit. La pièce est un peu longue à se mettre en route... attendez, persistez... laissez-vous le temps de comprendre ce que chacun cherche... leur histoire personnelle... pour mieux songer à votre cheminement personnel. Très bonne pièce. Les acteurs sont sublimes. Alan est parfait en "conseiller en écriture" un peu acerbe, brusque et tellement obnubilé par l'effort d'aider les autres. Très très bien. Je la regarderai de nouveau. MERCI

Because Rickman had signed a contract for a specific length of time, would be my guess. He probably had a tight schedule, considering his film career. The play was still popular, Goldblum was interested and available, so he took over the role. It's ten years later, so we'll have to go with guesses and suppositions ("I suppose")!
