I am thrilled to have been blessed to hear this great Carnatic singer with accomplished perfection even in his old age (I guess he must be in his mid sixties or early seventies)!!! The divine renditions on Lord Rama have been simply superb! Although I was not blessed to hear this great vidwan in person, I thank the gentleman who put this video on U-tube. Great service. Side by side saw the Aarathi to Lord Anjaneya. The day, date and year of performance ought to have been mentioned. Thanks a lot.

More than 75 to 85 years old,sorry,youngmastreo Sri.Senmangudi mama,because he was doing his daily sandhyavandhanam 3 times a day,and chanting the most sacred Gayathri mahamantram1008 times .he never consume any anaachara unwanted foods or drinks,coffee also.so,he was young and energetic until his last breath.My humble pranams to the greatest master .thankyou

the speciaility of semmnagudi lied in the fact that he produced great musical ideas from a utterly unmusical voice of his, which as the famous critic the redoubtable Subbudu put it once, as the most unimpressive voice in carnatic music. semmangudi and his greatness stemmed from his scholarship not from his voice and the way he struggledwith it, especially from his 60s till he died at 95.

There is no such thing as a musical voice. I do not discern any potential great musician when I listen to a Mallikarjun Mansur or a Pattammal speak. It is when SSI, MM, DKP sing that the mastery is evident, not in their everyday talk. It is the announcers who tend to have 'good' voices, and that is good enough for only 15-20 seconds of an announcement. Even film music singers do not need 'good' voice, classical singers much less so.
