Sena SMH5 Motorcycle Bluetooth Intercom Headset Review

We've been using the Sena SMH5 for a few months now so I thought I would make this video to give you my thoughts. They're pretty awesome - the only question is whether you go for something cheaper or the more expensive SMH10. For me they are a good balance of features and price though.

Bought the SMH 5 a few weeks ago. Primarily used as intercom, but stay connected to my phone so I can receive calls. Wind noise is minimal, even at highway speeds with boom mics on open face helmets. Bike is pretty loud so if you open the throttle it comes through a bit, but cancels out quickly. Gusts of wind will come through for a split second then cancel out. We love it. Nice to be able to talk on the road. My wife feels more secure if we are connected.

Totally agree! Occasionally when the battery has died my wife has really missed it and definitely enjoys the ride more if we can chat and communicate. I'd fully recommend it as the main thing you need to get if you want to get your wife into biking.

FWIW I think the current SMH5 comes with the same speakers that the SMH10 does. 2 years ago it was a smaller speaker.

good review. Of note is that recently Sena is shipping the 5 with the "larger" speakers, ie the same ones as the 10

no body can hear me when im talking on a call, yes i have it set up to hear instruction from sat nav bud how do you set it up so you can speak on calls

me and my passenger use this to talk to each other during a ride and the navigation is not a problem because she's the one checking her GPS and telling me when to turn.

mine gets interference with the engine ignition, comes through the speakers as increased static when you rev it

I have Sena 10S. My wife has SMH5 and she will sit behind me at my motorcycle. We and my two other Sena 10S friends can do a four way intercom?

Does it have noise cancelling on the mic too or only the headphones? Else how do you control wind and engine noise on the mic?

Please help. Thinking of buying this smh5 set for me and the wife. Can i connect it to bike (bmw bluetooth system), my phone and my wife headset at the same time? Plan is to listen to music, talk to the passenger and when my bikes navigation gives me instructions to be able to hear it. You mentioned something about it but i didnt understand. Thanks

Can you do a combination of things? Like listen to music, whilst you are talking to a passenger or rider? Or is it one sound input source at at time?

No it’s one at a time I think. So you can share music with your passenger, but if you want to talk to each other you hit the button to switch channels

Yeah - you need to switch to listen to your phone, then back to the passenger. So that can be a bit annoying if there are a lot of directions and you’re going off the audio only

In many reviews I've noticed the term, "Ear Buds" being used. Are they the speakers that come with the unit or something you can add to it? Thx

Hmmm not sure about buds but the box comes with a pair of flat earpieces that slip in behind the padding in your helmet

+Port:Will not that I know of. You have to switch between :( I probably should have mentioned that to be fair. It's a little frustrating I suppose. When the sat nav says "stay on this road for 18 miles" I just make a mental note on the odometer and try to remember to switch back...

I have just checked the Sena 10S review (RevZilla) and they said it can do "duplex", so in theory that can do intercom and bluetooth streaming simultaneously - if I understood correctly.. but that is double the price ..

Can you still hear passanger perfectly on high speed? Like 140 km/h and does it have wind noise blocker? Or whatever the technology is

140km/h is second gear and not high Speed :) :P

+The Folkish State Bjorn Raido good point they're water resistant. They probably won't work if you go scuba diving. I've had no problems with them in really bad rain, you just have to make sure you put the little rubber bung back in properly after charging
