TL;DW: He just evokes the old communitarianism vs liberalism debate. The true solution lies in intertwining the thought from both of these schools as Rousseau tried and Durkheim later did. To think that "free choice, ""free thought," and "freedom" are socially corrosive is pure ignorance.
@worfsonofmogh11545 жыл бұрын
I don't think he does, given his strong stance for freedom of speech. On the other hand, the kind of existentialism (liberation, self creation, lack of human essence, individual morality, aloneness) that he refutes is making the same point that the communists made against Sartre--that his philosophy of radical freedom is only useful for the bourgeoisie since they have resources and thus more choices. Although in Hawley's case, he does so from a fascist perspective, that our leaders should have possessed a hierarchical, mystical, clerical perspective, but at the same time not being so decadent and privileged that they stepped on the will of the lower classes. We could create class harmony by partnering with church, state, workers, industry for progress. Where he differs is in support of localism. There different views of freedom and it would seem Hawley is on the right track figuring this stuff out. All in all, a good speech.

@@worfsonofmogh1154 Individualism is a product of society. At societies emergence, it barely exists. Individualism continually emerges out of society as the division of labor gives rise to more unique situations. Individualism can either take two forms- egoist individualism (a focus on the self) or moral individualism (a focus on all individuals). Tradition inevitably erodes. Moral individualism must be put in its place. However, social structure is what guides morality. Corporations and private companies are inherently driven by egoist individualism, which further generates it in society. Hawleys doesn't mention the role of social structure in creating egoist individualism. Instead, he assumes it is a product of liberalism or a "kind of existentialism" to use your term. Nowhere does he argue that it is a product of our toxic economy.

@@cgjamil To be fair, I don't only mean in this speech. After seeing more of his content, that becomes more clear. However, there is still the implication that the liberalism is very much interconnected with economics here. That elitism can only be bankrolled by economic resources. Elites push freedom and libertine values because it justifies their own power. Insodoing they can control the means of production (he mentions the tech sector and offshoring) and that has the consequence of leaving rural/middle America behind. At that point individualism can be used to blame them for their poverty and deprivation. Pelagius being popular among the elites, who were the most specialized (not living an ordinary simple Roman existence: born, farm, die) because they too did the same thing. Their power came from economic privilege. So in fact it was the toxic economy, hence as the introduction points out, Hawley goes after pharmaceutical companies, Google, etc. I wasn't solely writing about the speech in itself, but instead what it added to what he's been saying elsewhere. I could have been more clear about that part.

Josh does not understand Pelagius, nor his teaching. Pelagius believed that grace is the gift of free will, the Laws of Moses and the teachings of Jesus. All else was simply institutional renderings built upon a hierarchy (elitism). This was a threat to Augustine, his contemporary, and the institutional church. Pelagius led a life of asceticism...How is this elitism? Poor Josh spins words, names and meanings in a web of confusion - much like his raised fist to the mob about to raid the Senate floor. The church had become a be autocratic institution and Pelagius wished to give meaning back to “belief”, not the bureaucracy it had become. Josh is the worst of what trump can become - an elitist that pimps “Gods words” for his political avarice. The founding fathers tried to keep the Josh’s contained to Sunday ritual. Temple Josh, QAnon, Proud Boys -- it is sad to see what evangelicals will say for power. Good luck graduates...time to think on your own and not be subservient to Josh.

Nice try. Pelagius had no understanding of grace. Pelagius was convinced that people had within them the ability to avoid corrupt behavior and choose righteous living even without the help of God’s grace. According to his theology, people are not naturally sinful, but can live holy lives in harmony with God’s will and thereby earn salvation through good works. That's not grace. Who are you working for, spreading the QAnon meme-smear? Try harder, we're on to you. #Hawley2024 +++
