Sending Ableton Information to TouchOSC (Ultimate Guide to TouchOSC)

We're back in Ableton Live and we're going to create a template for TouchOSC by adding on to the Patch created for the last Ableton Live video.
So we'll use OSC messages to receive the play-state, tempo, and track the playing measure number and beat from Ableton Live.

TouchOSC is a MIDI control surface for your old iPad, tablet, or phone to work with your DAW and other software. We are using the latest version of TouchOSC, Mk2. Hexler (hexler.net/touchosc) came out with the 2nd version (Mk 2) of TouchOSC in the summer of 2021.

Ya, that's all totally doable, you could also use the Connection Kit to send different parameters from Ableton Plugins. Good luck!

@@TimCorpus True (I guess I like the idea of being able to use Max like one big scribble pad, but yes I’ll try those too). I definitely like these Ableton/Max/OSC (especially “Labels updating”) tutorials. I got this one working last night & am eager to find out what other info I can “pull” out of Live. (Especially i.e.- Bank Parameters B1 P1, B1 P2, etc. if possible). Thanks so much 🙏

Tim, thanks for a great video. I've got everything connected and talking from Ableton to TouchOSC and vice versa however, I'm running into an issue when I try and change time signatures within the timeline in arrangement view. Say I'm in 4/4 for the first 16 measures, then on the 17th measure I change the time signature to 3/4. The bar count on my device jumps to higher number and the beat count gets off as well. For the 3/4 measure, it doesn't read bar 17 beat 1 within TouchOSC. It reads bar 22 beat 2. If I try changing back to 4/4 on the 18th measure, it reads bar 17 beat 4. Now the entire count is off afterwards. Any ideas on what's causing that or how to fix it? Thanks for your help!

Interesting, I haven't seen that issue, but that sounds super annoying. My first guess is the send from Ableton isn't working correctly in its math, so you could try a different node for sending the beats. I'm on the road these days, so less available for TouchOSC stuff, but I'd recommend hitting up the discord server as there are a lot of Ableton users there.

can the patch send color and clip names to a button grid (like recreating APC40 clip launch)....but specifically updating names as you scroll thru say a set button layout of 8x10?

I'm working on something to show scene name for a label, but to answer the question, yes it's possible to send the information.

@10:00 if you look closely, you can see "Bar, Beat, Tempo" joyfully dancing, because they are excited about this M4l Device. Are you the only one working on this device? Sadly, i m too dumb to build upon this device on my own, so i ll have to hope it will include the stuff i m looking for someday - which is a "better" Ableton Session View in Touch OSC: Showing not only the Clips with their colors, but also their names, and their playback-progress within! (Tracknames above, Session Names to the right, too, ofc).

There are a lot of great people working on their own templates with the app. Have you checked out the Discord or Facebook group? Depending on what you're trying to do, I think Ableton has its own remote control too.

@@TimCorpus In Ableton you have the macros for each instrument / effects, with a control surface you can have a "blue hand" that affect automatically the macros to your controller. I manage to have fader that shows automatically the values of my macros and change when I switch to another instrument but I don't know how I can get the label/name of these macros that appear under my fader in touchOSC. Is it clear ? Thanks a lot for your answer

I have a lap top touchscreen, I dont need conect a IPAD or Tablet... can I work only with LAP top touchscreen?

Hey. Yeah I'm guessing this is doable with a different node in a M4L patch. I haven't tried it myself, but in theory you should be able to pull the Clip info and then send similar to other information.

hey, thank you for this tutorial. i was following along this video, and then i got into a problem. if i have a time signature change (let say on bar 16 change to 3/4) in my ableton, beyond 16th bar, the bar counter in touchosc is not sync anymore with ableton. do you know how to solve/workaround for this issue? thanks.

Oh interesting predicament. I don't have an answer off the top of my head, but I'll add it to my "to-do's". The bar should still be the bar internally, so I'm not sure why it's doing that
