He was probably depressed from losing his mom after so many years. You came along and gave him a second chance of living a beautiful life. I may stop having pets after my Boston dies. It's just been getting harder each time another one dies. I was wretched when my Chihuahua died of a heart attack July 5th, 2020, because people in my neighborhood kept shooting off fireworks until they were done with what they had. She was terrified of the noise. I screamed loud enough to blow a lightbulb (which I didn't realise was possible). My heart dies a little each time, and I don't want to have a new baby outlive me, with me having no guarantee they'll keep having a good life.

@@injunsun Not being sarcastic, but do you like certain birds as pets? Their life expectancy is MUCH longer. You would need to learn about how to care for them, very different from cats or dogs. One good thing, smaller dogs generally have longer life expectancy, so you should have your friend longer.

@@injunsun I'm so sorry to hear about your little Chihuahua dying from a heart attack because of bloody fireworks, what a waste of a much loved animal and I understand you not wanting to get any more dogs after your Boston dies because you would be afraid of leaving it behind if you die first. This is how I feel with my present dog, I live in great fear of dying first and having to leave her. There are animal charities I can contact who will take my pet if I die and find her a new home, but even that upsets me as I know she will miss me and wonder where I am. It's also sad to know that when she goes, there will be no more dogs for me, so you see Herne, you are not alone, I suspect there will be plenty of us in this predicament. You could maybe get an old dog who only has a couple of years left, or maybe foster, but again, I know that when the time comes, it will be hard to let go. Grief is the price we pay for LOVE and personally, I wouldn't be without that love, would you ? Best wishes.

The three years this sweet lady gave Shorty were filled with so much love that when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he did so on wings of love and his dear doggie heart filled with all the wonderful memories they made together. PLEASE -- Please don't overlook an old dog or one with health issues. Fur can turn grey, vision dim, bones creak and muscles move slower --- but the heart remains ageless and just as capable of loving and being loved.

I definitely appreciate people that go out of their way to help such animals But even a typical healthy pet is a lot of work and expensive to take care of It requires more of that if you get an animal with issues knowingly unfortunately Rescue pets that have fosters or fundraisers to help cover healing or care costs are definitely lucky But people definitely need to be prepared to be able to provide the proper care needed for a pet with special requirements Unfortunately some people can’t even take care of a “healthy pet “ It’s a big responsibility If you were to adopt/rescue such a pet and then be unable to care for it properly the animal would probably get in worse condition or perhaps rehomed

It's wonderful that she was there for him, but you can't say that was his best 3 yrs... You cant know his story prior to that with his deceased owner. Unfortunately, older ppl will feed their pets anything and everything, sneaking food under the table or hiding it in his pockets for them later. I know my father's chihuahua's got fat in the latter part of his life, he had dementia and would overfeed them, but he loved those dogs and they were the one thing he recalled when he lost all memory of my mother, myself, and other family members. They have lost the weight in the 9 months since he passed but it wasn't done out of abuse or not caring. But indeed the final 3 years he had were lovely women were indeed good for him.

My rescued chi's owner died and her owner's relative wanted to shoot her in the yard before someone took her away from him. Took me two years to get her to open up. They bond for life and require so much love to get back onto their feet. My girl's pushing ten, but still fine. Can't imagine a life where these old dogs don't get the love they deserve.

Actually, most people think that 1 human year is 7 for a dog, but that is incorrect. The 1st year is 7, then it increases for dogs. The 2nd year is more like 10 years and and it increases the older they get. 3 is 12, 4 is more like 17 etc... that's why dogs start getting gray hair, between 5 and 7 years of age, because they are in there 60's almost 70's by then.

The first dog I adopted from a shelter, I only got to have 6 months with her. She had undiagnosed kidney problems and when we found out, it was already too late. She was an absolute treasure and a year later I still can barely think abouther without crying. I have now adopted two dogs from a rescue and they are slowly mending my heart with their crazy antics :)

Sometimes their souls are so bright that even a few months can feel like a lifetime. That's how we felt with our little Winnifred. Found a cat outside our house one day. She'd sit at the edge of the pool and we worried she would fall in and drown so one day we just hung around outside to see if she would approach us and she practically ran to us when we called 'kitty kitty'. She was a beautiful tortie Persian but you would not have known it looking at her. Matted beyond hell and a bag of bones beneath it. She was clearly dumped since she was also declawed with no chip/collar. I was unemployed at the time so while my husband was at work I'd work on getting the mats out a little bit at a time with a comb and scissors since the clippers couldn't feasibly cut through and eventually I found the cat beneath the fur. I remember her being so much happier without all that weight, despite being clearly dumped and starving, she just got that look on her little face that shined like you could tell she felt better already. We had a great year with her and pampered her as much as we could seeing how she came from such a bad place. The vet we had at the time (he was just a careless mess and turns out later he got in trouble for a lot of misdiagnoses of other patients and no longer in practice, thank god) checked her and said besides a high white blood count, she was fine. I felt in my gut that something was wrong since she wasn't putting on weight well and had a bit of blood in her urine, but he assured us she was fine. Fast forward, my husband and I come home from work and she stumbles up to us, part of her intestines poking out of her rectum. Rushed her to the emergency vet and they gave her a very very low chance of happiness even with the surgery they could perform. I couldn't bear to see her suffer anymore after everything, so I gave them the go ahead and we accompanied her in her final moments with us as she purred away from all the love. Even typing all this I'm tearing up and it's hard looking at her pictures knowing if I had just followed my gut she may still be here. EDIT: Forgot to mention, but it turns out she had hookworms that weakened her intestinal wall and caused the prolapse. What angered me about the emergency vet telling us this is that the previous vet had caught the high white blood cell count (which can be a sign of such an infestation) but didn't bother to test further through a fecal sample. One test would have saved her life. Moral of the story- if you feel a diagnoses might be wrong or incomplete, always get that second opinion!

I adopted a senior chiweenie from a high kill shelter where he’d been “surrendered”because his other family “didn’t have time anymore to give him the attention he deserves.” I’ve had him since 2015. Based on the info I was given, he’s about 21 now. He’s a grumpy old curmudgeon who basically tolerates the other canines but still thinks he rules the house. He has cataracts and arthritis and he can’t go up steps by himself anymore. He’s my little Buddy though and I dread the day when he crosses. ❤️💔

I don't know if they were the best years, and I mean that in the nicest way, no shade to this lady at all. I've known many forgetful elderly people who fatten up their pets due to forgetting they've already fed them, and immediately thought this is what happened this time. It might not have been like this during the dogs entire life, and they could have been very kind and doting. Plus, dogs getting miserable stuck in a shelter isn't uncommon.

Making your dog obese is 100% animal abuse, you are the one feeding the dog and providing it of exercise. An overweight dog struggles to walk and breath, the extra pressure in it's heart and joint shortens it's life span, I grew up with a German Shepherd and despise of it's big size it couldn't overeat or it could die, we make sure to monitor her and keep her healthy, people that overfeed dog don't deserve them

It's not "animal abuse" if the previous owner didn't do it on purpose. She was elderly, so she could have been overfeeding due to forgetfulness, like the commnt above me said, OR she could have just loved the dog too much and fed it too many treats and snacks that weren't good for the dogs health. So again, not abuse, just not necessarily the best for the doggie's weight problem.

Senior animals are just something so special, it makes me sad so few people consider adopting them, I had 4 amazing years with my senior cat, but whether you get one year or 15, it’s honestly never enough time, they’re family and it’s sad we typically outlive them regardless. My home is open to animals of any age who need me.

My son just lost his 17 year old chihuahua, Frank. We knew that it would be so hard to let a vet put him to sleep, so we were thankful when he passed in his sleep. Frank wasn't just a pet, he was a friend. Thank you so much for taking care of Shorty. It will come back to you in good luck and good health for the rest of your life. Your mother sounds like a kind hearted person, too. Thanks for posting, it made me happy to watch you and your loving pets.

I'm sorry that you lost Frank. I would thank the heavens if my dog passes in his sleep when his time on Earth is done. I've had to have a dog euthanized out of mercy and the pain of that is almost indescribable to me. 17 years is a long life for a dog. I know that you guys loved Frank and provided for him. 👍

This put a tear in my eyes. Thank you for taking him to the vet, that is a miracle in itself, because a lot of people who own dogs don’t have the finances for that. One could have easily thought “oh I’ll just limit his food and take him for walks and his fat will melt away”. Not so with hypothyroidism. People need to understand that dogs can have the same hormone diseases as humans. My chihuahua ended up the Cushing’s Disease, a disorder where there is a high cortisol level. You are a wonderful lady, you saved this dogs life.

@@isiriscasiano3719 I’m sorry to hear that. Did the vet give you any explanation as to why your dog developed Cushings? We’re not sure how or why our chihuahua ended up with it. One idea I had was that she had an odd reaction to the Rabies shot. We didn’t want to give her the second one, but the vets’ office refused to care for her if we didn’t do it. It’s either that or hereditary. I really would like to know.

That’s so true, even with cats. I have 5 cats and 6 dogs, and none of my friends or family knew that our pets can get the same diseases as us. I have a 14 year old senior cat, Moe, who has gingivostomatitis, gum disease; and I have a 10 year old senior cat, Muffin, who is deaf. My 4 year old snowshoe kitty, Charlie, just passed the day before Halloween of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, heart disease. All of my pups are healthy at this time, but it’s so important to take them for their annual check ups if it can be afforded, to catch these terrible diseases in their early stages; that way they’re more treatable with a much higher survival rate.

@@leannegreen7830 I actually didn’t 😥 And that’s the sad thing. She was perfectly healthy, very active, and had an appetite like my grown pit bulls, lol. The only thing that I can remember, that I now know was a symptom, ( but didn’t know at the time ), was in the summertime when she was about a year old, I used to let them go outside to explore while I would be doing yard work; and Charlie was running and climbing tree’s one day, when she got very hot and started panting with her mouth open. So I brought her inside and laid her by the air conditioner to cool her off, then she was fine. That’s the only time she ever showed any kind of symptom. The morning she passed away, I was getting ready for work, when I heard my husband screaming for me from the kitchen. He said Charlie was choking on something 😓 So I rushed in and saw blood everywhere. She was gagging, coughing, and blood was coming from her mouth and nose. I tried CPR and everything I could possibly think of, but she died a few minutes later in my arms. I called into work and took her little body to the vet, where they performed an autopsy; and sure enough, heart disease was the culprit. The vet said there’s no way I could have known, and all of her regular blood tests and check ups had always been good/normal. She said most times, even in dogs, heart disease shows no warnings; therefor it’s called the silent killer. I know Charlie was happy and she knew she was loved. She was my little tomboy kitty. I stressed myself so much waiting on her autopsy results. I researched everything I could on the internet, and heart disease was actually one of the things that popped up. I miss her with every bit of my soul, even though I have 5 other cats, and 6 dogs; there’s still a void. I miss her on the back of the couch where she would nap, I miss her scratching on my bedroom door to get loves, I miss her waiting for me at my front door when she would hear me come home from work every day, I miss her big blue eyes that looked like a frozen summer sky, I miss her quirky meows and her loud purrs, I miss her every day at feeding time, bc her spot where she would patiently wait for her plate of food is now empty. But knowing there’s nothing I could have done, and nothing that could have helped her makes me feel a little better. I definitely don’t regret having the autopsy done, or I would still be on the internet stressed out, searching for answers.

I've watched this a few times, and I still cry at the end. It's a good cry, sad that he's not here but good because you gave him the love he needed and deserved. He didn't understand his previous owner died, he just knows she isn't there anymore. How sweet it was to watch him thrive in your care.

Yes. I agree how she thought about his joints. Did the water exercise to lose weight. Instead of the usual walk for a younger dog. This makes me want to go back being a vegetarian. Seeing they are still being eating in Asia. Hundred years ago. They would be left outdoors to fend foe themselves

I love how when she'd talk with him, he'd bark all hyperly and excited, that's literally how my dog gets too 💀 Super hyper af when I say something like "You want a treat?" Or "You wanna go for a walk?" I'm glad for her honesty in saying she wishes she had him longer, but I hope she knows she probably gave him the best 3 years he could have had! In the shelter he would have died sooner, with way less fun and love. If I'm ever in my own house, I hope to foster senior pets. :)

Thank you for adopting a senior dog & giving him a loving home! I wish more people would open their hearts & homes to senior pets. I just lost my little buddy Rocky. He was a Jack Russell we found running in the street when both he & our oldest daughter were both 3 years old. He was 2 weeks shy of turning 20 when he crossed the rainbow bridge! We know his birthday because we eventually found his original owners. They didn't want him so we happily kept him! He was my little shadow! I miss him terribly!

Bless her sweet soul! Adopting an older dog/cat is such a wonderful thing to do. The life she gave Shorty at the end of his long life, just beautiful. I adopted a very neglected, abandoned shih tzu who was very elderly. We only had him for maybe 6 months. To hold him after he was clean and de-matted and happy and to see him sitting in the sun at peace was so incredibly special.
