One thing you didnt mention, is the shock of the fall, can cause a temporary moment of extra weakness. So , one thing that may help to do is get comfortable/relax for a second to regain strength / composure.

Is it that laying prone on the ground is damaging, or is it that people who can not get up are in a pretty bad way? I am thinking the latter.

The key is as he said, if you cannot get help you have to get up as soon as possible to save yourself. Otherwise, the priority is to get help.

It is not easy as it looks.I tripped and fell in my bedroom Broke my left humeral head .With bad knees couldn't I couldn't pull myself up.
