Currently ranked the best watercolour paint in the world…Sennelier started out making paint for Cezanne, Degas etc. Picasso used it as did Hockney. Van Gogh was known to have used it also and is not cheap paint. I was in one of the Sennelier shops in Paris last week and it is always an adventure.

Omg! I tried Sennelier today and I’m so in love. The way that the colors mingle with each other. It reminds me almost of oil on how you can build and keep adding more and each layer gets you excited on what it’s going to look like when it dries ❤

Lightfastness is much more pigments based. Individual colours vary. Some full artist grade paints are fugitive (not lightfast). Artist grade is quality not lightfastness. Many brands now focus on lightfastness however. These are extruded pans not hand poured. Sometimes it’s nice to use fugitive supplies such as getting real glowing opera/neon ‘fluorescents. Just go into it knowing the lightfastness. I recommend doing one year window lightfastness tests yourself and basing purchases on pigment information.

Thank you for your comment. I have learned so much more about watercolors and pigments since creating this video and your right that it varies from brand to brand. I don’t care as much now if all the pigments I use are lightfast because I scan my art now so I just choose the colors I like. I’ve actually been looking for some neon watercolors to try because I like how bright they are so please let me know if you would recommend any. I do have the opera rose from Daniel Smith ☺️

Sennelier are professional paints and are beautiful! The honey makes them so wonderful to re wet and work with. The cost of them in the USA is an excellent price. I think you need to do some research because most all reds (in every brand) are fugitive and not lightfast. Even if yours say it is doesn’t always mean it is. Try doing your own lightfast tests. Thank you for sharing the video!

Thank you and your welcome 😄 I was surprised when I first saw them but I’m in love with them now. I few more colors in my cart already lol. Someone else mentioned doing my own lightfast testing so I think I might do that for all my paints. I guess I just took the companies word that if their paying to have these tests done then what they say is right. I know a lot of reds aren’t lightfast that’s why for pieces I’m selling I choose ones that say they are permanent but now I’m curious.

I don't think I've ever used the thumb ring on a metal palette, lol! The palette looks so funny with only six on the bottom rail - I have the 24 set so the whole tin is filled (it actually will fit 26 half pans). Extruded dry paints do tend to look a little "cheaper" because how how cookie-cut they are. But once Sennelier paints are activated with water, their true brilliance comes through (as noted in your swatching & painting). I adore Sennelier paints so much, they are some of my most favourite watercolours ever! They have a particular luminosity to them that is hard to describe, and they layer like nobody's business. The "Alizarin Crimson" in your set here is actually the permanent version (which in my testing is lightfast), and the original PR83 is called Alizarin Crimson Lake in Sennelier's range (definitely not lightfast!). The Bright Red is a total mystery - I have no clue what it is. Your cake painting looks so delicious. Sennelier's Payne's Grey is my all time favourite from any brand. I'm glad you got to use them! My most used colours are Forest Green, French Vermilion, Cinereous Blue, Blue Indanthrene and Payne's Grey. Oh, oh and Helios Purple!! 😆

I am getting so much mileage from forest green and Indanthrene bl. Something I’ve been playing with is using Sennelier with the Schmincke “super-granulating” because of their smooth transparency. Becky, I’m glad you pointed out the processing of Sennelier pan paints. The tube paints simply don’t dry the way formulas like hand-made paints might, because of the honey-binder. They aren’t suitable for pouring, but the paint behavior when wet is still reliable (with exceptions for the more frustrating pigment formulations). I assume Sennelier watercolor paints either work well for artists because of their sheer application. And it’s something that frustrates other artists who don’t layer as part of their process. Anytime anyone does a deep dive into Artist-grade materials, I enjoy watching, because I’m sure to learn or see something new. Thank you, Naomi✨

It seems the ring on the back is what is preventing the lid from resting flat on the table surface. Perhaps place something on the bottom to raise the base of the container. Messing with the hinge will make the problem worse.

Most professional and artist grade paints have fugitive pigments in some colors. I'm a big supporter of testing your products for yourself to see what truly happens as I've had brands say a color is lightfast yet it faded really quickly. Your cake turned out lovely!

I was so excited to see this review!! I guess I am not the right person to ask since the only set I’ve tried outside of the sennelier are the winsor and Newton Cotmans which are technically student grades, but the sennelier are my favorites! I have such a large set of them (the 48, you already know haha) and I absolutely love the color range even if it can be overwhelming. When i used cotmans, I sometimes had trouble wetting the paints at first but I never have that issue with the sennelier set. They just come off so easily and I love the consistency. I love the piece of cake you painting and how you were able to get all those different textures and add the gouache also. I can’t wait to see what else you do with this set in the future!

theyre called extruded pans. the only companies that hand pour pans are da vinci, schmincke, daniel smith and roman szmal and white nights i think, not counting handmade paints. extruding is quicker than poured pans. you can see that pans like winsor newton and sennelier are more glossy when dried vs cheap paints which usually look chalky and matte

Tag-teaming a follow-up... I love this set and bought some Sennelier tubes after. They're lovely paints (mostly*) but the tubes are not nearly as well behaved as the extruded pans. Home-filled pans of this brand don't set up very well - it seems worse than even other honey-based paints. *The exception was Caput Mortum. It's a gorgeous color but it separates in the tube and doesn't seem to want to mix back up. Thought maybe I got a defective tube but I've seen a few videos where people had the same problem with their tubes. It's a gorgeous color but best either in pre-filled pans or a different brand tube.

Bright Red is PR 3 Toluidine Red it has very good light fastness. This is the set I started out with, and you are right it is a bad selection of colors. They need to revamp their choices. This video was the first recommendation for the day and so it had to be the first video I watch ☺️. Your cake looks delicious and it turned out so well! My range of Sennelier colors is increasing LOL. I know I’m a broken record player (remember those?!): I have the 8 half pan travel set and 8 tube travel set. Only one color is repeated. I love the convenience of half pans but the price of the tubes is more economical, so I’m buying extra tubes. I love using these paints. The only other professional brand I have are some tubes of Daniel Smith paints. The Sennelier rewet so well and I really enjoy using them. If Schmincke professional range didn’t use oxgall I would have tried those too, but alas the oxgall means I won’t buy them. So I’m sticking to Sennelier 😊. Enjoy your paints! ❤️

I like that their in pans so I can pull the colors I want to use out and use them with my other brands. @@NaomiCoutureArt Sennelier have a turquoise green (PG50) and it’s in my cart 😁. Is that the one you’re referring to? Even though I’m a beginner (or possibly one step up from a beginner), the 8 half pan travel set have what I consider some unexpected pigment combinations, like French ultramarine is PG29 plus PV15 and cinerous blue is PG15:5 and PW4. So I’m going to buy single pigment ultramarine, the turquoise green, the gorgeous dioxazine purple and some other tubes of single pigment watercolors. Once I have made these purchases I believe I’m done 😅.

I forgot to add: Sennelier half pans are extruded not poured and they do behave differently than their tube paints. What I’ve done is buy a tube when my pan gets low and top it off. The tube paints stay much juicier like M Graham and Mijello. I like the tubes better but glad I got my 24 half pan set when I did. I don’t like their Alizarin at all and I don’t care for their earth tones. I bought a tube of their olive green which is closer to a sap and I love it. Thats a good one to add to your palette. Their quin red is nice too. I would replace the bright red with Sennelier red and if you use as much ultramarine as I do I would buy their big tube 21 ml tube.
