Swatching my favourite Sennelier Watercolour paints!

Hi everyone! Today I'm starting with a new series of videos where I share my favourite art supplies, starting with my very first professional watercolour: Sennelier. This brand is very dear to me as it was the first artist quality paint I ever tried, and it opened a whole new world to me. It's still one of my favourites today, so I thought it was very fitting to start this series sharing my favourite colours from their range. What about you; do you use Sennelier watercolours? What are your favourites?

Also, green is my favorite color of all time, but for some reason Sennelier's Chinese Orange is my absolute favorite color by them. There is nothing quite like it. There aren't enough words in existence to describe how beautiful it is. That color and PO48 (Quin Burnt Orange). That pigment has been discontinued, but when mixed with Nickel Azo Yellow (PY150) it makes Quin Gold, but the Quin Gold that you just cannot replicate with any other pigment combination. Chinese Orange and PO48. Very very similar actually. They are both a gorgeous burnt orange color that just has this glow from within. Brilliantly beautiful, exceedingly gorgeous, rapturously enthralling.........just a few phrases that come close to describing it🤣🤣

Sennelier is one of my favorite I have 2 sets of Professional and 2 sets of student grade. They are both really good and vibrant!

Wow! I just pulled out my Sennelier brochure to look at the names and pigments, and the colors on the brochure only vaguely resemble the paints. Your demonstration and verbal descriptions are so beautiful!

It is indeed… my favourite version of this pigment. Sennelier’s vibrancy is really unpaired imho.

Nice video. Thanks. Definitely some here that i want to check out. Sennelier is a favorite for me too. :) Will look for a vid on your seascape pallette too. The light gray reminds me of a granulating Payne's Gray. Glad to find another Chinese Orange fan! That color is just so versatile. Also got mine in an intro set of 5 and every color was wonderful ! (Lemon Yellow, Chinese Orange, Bright Red, Utramarine Blue Deep, Payne's Gray). Maybe that was yours too? It was enough for me to be hooked! Marty Owings says "Sennelier sings like love", and i quite agree!

Thank you! Yes, indeed, I got the Chinese orange in the same intro set and it quickly became a favourite. I have a few video ideas coming up, I’ll make sure to include the seascape palette in the list 😊

These colors are pretty close to my favorite color palette 😍 I'm really interested in the brand but I have too many watercolors at the moment so hopefully in the future 😅

The cobalt green turquoise by Schmincke Horadam is nearly similar to the Cobalt green. Actually I prefer the one by Schmincke 🤗

Oh! I wonder if it is the pigments that are larger and more prone to granulating that causes the binder separation in the Sennelier tubes? My Caput Mortuum had really bad separation when I opened it and you mentioned that the cobalts you had did that too. Cobalts are larger, more granulating pigments also.

I think you are right, I heard cobalts are problematic in other brands also.

I don’t really mix it with any colour, I use it straight from the tube as it is. I find it beautiful paired with a dark teal like phthalo turquoise for example, or a dark green like Perylene green. I may do a video in the future showing some colour combinations I like, thanks for the suggestion 😉

Not sure if this helps...but it can be mixed to serve as a broad range of earths (burnt sienna like to umber like browns and more.) It can be used to mix darks. It can be mixed to yield brick colors and maroons. If memory seves it can also be mixed to make some interesting earthy quin gold-ish type colors and useful for certain greens. Best mixes will depend on the pigments and mixes and manufacturers in your palette, but it's fun to explore!
