They have a color chart on their website and I recommend seeing what the pigments are before buying. I like to stick to single pigments colors most of the time but the cost savings in the sets often tempt me:) www.sennelier-c...
They also offer a student range of watercolors. I have never seen then in the USA and I have not used them.

I think the sennelier are made with a traditional water colour approach in mind....I think a lot of people into more design aspects such as card decor etc may do well with the Japanese vibrant colours that have more opacity. What you get with paints like Sennelier is more at the opposite end of the spectrum with delicate glazing techniques....you can build up the most delicate luminous lifelike qualities of the plants and foliage allowing the white of the paper to shine through, and these paints are some of the best for that. As you say it's horses for courses....and worth considering what you need the paints for before shelling out....anyone with doubts about these professional quality paints just check out Anna Mason and Billy Showell in on line tutorials....

I like the concept of Sennelier. It’s more transparent which is what I want in a watercolor. If I want a heavy opaque paint, then I would use my gouache paints.

Well, brought these paints based on your review 2 years ago. I was HELL skeptical when working with them. And I was used to charging in with bold and bright colors, so used the ultramarine and burnt sienna in 2 paintings lol! Didn't touch the paints for an year, cuz was scared of using them up. A year ago, I started focusing on layering techniques, replaced my burnt sienna and Ultramarine, and have ABSOLUTELY fallen in Love with them. These are the colors which are helping me define my own style! Thanks a Lot for this review! PS. I brought the 24 color set and supplimented it with a quin magenta (Helios purple in Sennelier) and Indanthrene blue. The set now provides everything I need without anything I don't. (Learnt to use even the colors with white added!!)

I invested in my first artist grade paints with Sennelier and happy hearing that people who've tried it are satisfied. I alao checked lightfast tests and they hold up pretty strongly for an entire year taped to a window in the sun. I got this exact set with 12 +6 free pans as an investment. The Sennelier shop here in Paris had a sale of 25% off for watercolors and the lady was kind enough to suggest this set because the +6 pans and plus the discount is great value for money. I paid about 43 euros so pretty darn good deal.

Nice review Lindsay! I bought the 12 set for $60 last year at Jerry's (without the 6 extra). Lovely paints. I keep them in my small grab and go sketch kit. A bit more opaque than my M. Graham palette choices so I don't use them for studio work much (cool to know you're also an M. Graham-o-phile). Great paint for location sketching though!

+The Mind of Watercolor yes, they are my favorite! I could not pass up this set tho and Ali agree they seem more opaque or maybe weaker in color and I reckon it might be why you can make subtle adjustments easily with glazes. It is my first long palette and I like the room for a pen or brush in the middle. I am not sure if I will buy more colors, I need to use them more and see. Thanks for commenting Steve!

That Payne's Grey is not dissimilar to what I refer to as "Jane's Grey Plus" which is Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna and Quin Rose - I think DS call that "Shadow" and some companies per this one swap the Ultramarine for Phthalo Blue RS. It's in my Chromatic Neutrals video and has a lot of depth. You're right some of these are unusual pigments - I'll do an analysis of each paint when I have time. Thanks for the shoutout though I don't think anyone's ever called me "[high] falutin" before ;)

It looks like from your swatches that they are not good but amazing for glazing. I find it extremely painful when the colours reactivate due to glazing and it just moves everything around. I saw Melibertine's video where she paints the flowers with these pink tones and it's just absolutely fantastic how they don't move when she applies the second layer. Looking to upgrade to these and a paper better than Canson. Thank you for the review ;)

Aquarellina i personally think Strathmore 300 is better than Canson XL. From drawing paper and mixed media paper, no experience with Canson WC paper because I don’t want to try it. The price is comparable.

This was a very helpful review. I've always wanted to snag these when they are on sale. I bought a 24 palette of Windsor Newton on sale about 5 years ago and found that I was not crazy about some of the colors, so this review was perfect for helping me decide. I decided not to get it because I already do have the colors I like in the palette. I loved seeing all the swatches. Great review!

Yes, please do a tutorial of the blue Jay's feather. Very cool!! I tried the second autumn leaf with several coats of glazes with my Qor set on Strathmore 400 series paper, and the paper pilled, and buckled. I was surprised as I usually use the 300 series without these problems. I will post the painting to your fBk site when it dries.

I bought these when they dropped again to $35, since I was very curious about honey-based water color, but didn't want to go down the M. Graham slippery slope! ha. As you so rightly put it, they don't knock my socks off. The pigments are ground so finely that they lose some of their character. For instance, the ultramarine doesn't granulate! WHAT! And color-wise, the burnt sienna is disappointing, as is the Venetian red. What I did find is that they provide nice control for liner work. They're so smooth and maybe the honey makes them a touch sticky so it's super easy to get nice fine lines with them. So their purpose in my kit is liner work. They will never replace my Daniel Smith collection for vibrancy, pigment load and character. But they're kind of fun. I don't like the way the palette opens, but having a wide center area between the rows of pans so more pans can fit in between is nice. Thanks for the idea and tips.

The more I've iused them the more I like them. I find it is impossible to overwork a painting with these because they glow the more layers you use rather than get muddy. They are not my #1 paint either but for certain subjects they rock! And for $35, totally worth it!

Because you did the layering for Sennelier, their 3rd layer would be similar to the mass tone of how you swatches the other brands. So the top of your swatch where the color is the strongest. If you searched Sennelier the same way, you would find that you can do a dark 1st layer like with the others. Also, Ultramarine is not a naturally granulating pigment. If you have brands in which Ultramarine granulated, it is because it has an additive to help with granulation. Just thought you'd like to know that.
@mangomontero
@mangomontero 3 жыл бұрын
Ultramarine is not a naturally granulating pigment?? Granulating ultramarines have something added? I don’t think so. Ultramarin feinst from Schmincke is the least granulating PB29 (that I know of), and only because it is ground finer to avoid the natural granulation of the ultramarine blue pigment.

I like doing landscapes and have this tendency to layer and my paint just spreads like threads on the paper. Thanks for your thoughts on these Lindsay. I couldn't decide whether to get the W&N 18 professional watercolours from Cass Art or this set of Sennelier from Curtis Ward. Both were a steal of a deal. Following your review I got the W&N. I really don't think that I'd have been happy with the Sennelier as your review showed that a lot of the colours consisted of unusual pigment combinations. I also have Gansai Tambi and a tiny metal travel tin of ten DR Aquafine which I absolutely love due to the intense pigmented colours that produce clean mixes.

So if you would use the Sennelier for glazing, then I take it you would only glaze Sennelier over Sennelier? I assume if the Cotman;s (which I use) lift easily that would still happen glazing Sennelier over them? I must say that primary set of Daniel Smith are calling my name though. Thanks Lindsay

I get the prima kits just for the metal tin; although, I must admit, I don't hate their paints. I am not a fan of all their sets, but their tropicals and woodlands I do enjoy. The woodlands is probably my fave of their sets because the colors, although highly pigmented, seem to be a bit subdued. When I want to paint in a vintage style or make a peice look old, faded, vintage, it's definitely my go to. I don't like sennelier myself. I prefer Daniel Smith and W&N over sennelier. Even those are easy to expensive to be honest about it. Especially these days when there are so very many quality paints made for students that perform just as well at a fraction of the price. Especially today when most at is sold as a print. Great review. Maybe I'll retry them in a heavy glaze building up layers before I give them away.

Have you tried Sennelier in the tubes? I know you like MG, and I think the Sennelier are very close to those. They are really saturated, and they generally retain their moisture very well. I saw the flower you did a day or so ago with these and really liked how saturated the color was. Oh and those magic erasers will get up your staining color remnants like Phthalo Blue. It is the only thing apart from soaking a palette in Bleach, that I have seen to remove the stains on palettes. Always look forward to your wc videos!

If you already have a comparison, could you point me in the direction of the video? Thanks so much and thank you for all the wonderful content!! Love your channel ❤️❤️❤️

Lindsey, that feather you did with the Sennelier is gorgeous! Did you do a tutorial on that one? Not finding it in your playlists. I’ve been thinking about getting this paint because I’m so pokey with my watercolor. Can’t seem to get myself to move fast enough before water dries up so I think it may be just what I’m looking for. Thanks and blessings to you!

I HATE those "flap trays" on metal palettes. Someone showed me how to take them off and I've removed all of them in my collection. Just get in the way and constantly a problem. I use a ceramic tray for mixing anyway which is superior ($7 Walmart lol).

Thanks for this Lindsay! I agree with you on Naples Yellow Deep which I may buy a single tube of, but see no real need between my collection of Turner and Daniel Smith paints for any of the other colors, with perhaps the exception of forest green because it's not as deep as a Perylene Green which I think is actually a black pigment that skews green (I'm sure Rich will correct me if I'm wrong or confirm!). As far as white added, we disagree slightly; my favorite DS Verditer Blue has white added, but it's PW4 Zinc White which is transparent as opposed to the opaque Titanium White (PW6). Also, can you teach us how to do the water droplet on a day when you need a short, quick video? I'd appreciate it, and I picked up the Uni-Ball Signo white gel pens when I saw how opaque they were from your tutorials when you used them!

Great video Lindsay! 😆 With me being so detailed oriented, I really do love this set. Here are the wonderful half pan colors I added to the tin: Quin. Red (pr209), Magenta Permanent(pv19), Cobalt Violet light hue(pv16,pr112,pw6), Caput mortum(pr101), Yellow ochre(py43), indigo blue(pb60,pr15:1,pbk7), Blue indanthrene(pb60), blue cobalt deep(pb72). I will attach a photo in google+ so you can see the swatches. 😆 I realize, out at the game you didn't have the pan wrappers, but if you look on the wrapper (white part) it does list all the pigment color(s), lightfastness ratings, and transparency, that's where I got my information above...just a fyi. 😉 Watercolors are definitely a personal choice and it is OK to like different ones. These definitely glaze beautifully and for me the more subtle, less in your face with the first swipe is perfect. I want the control to build instead of trying to calm down a to bright color. I also have 5 of the sennelier in tubes. One color is confusing based on name. It's called brown pink (py150, pg7, pbr23), BUT the color is a greenish gold...absolutely beautiful landscape color, just not the right name imo...lol 😉

oh I have to add this. I just compared my sennelier indigo (pb60, pb15:1, pbk7) to my mission gold indigo (pb29, pb27, pbk7) and I have to say the sennelier is absolutely gorgeous and the mission gold is more (for a lack of a better word) blah. The sennelier has a beautiful deep dark blue to it, where as the mission gold actually looks very similar sennelier's neutral tint with a very small hint of blue added...very surprising. I only have this color in the 2 brands, so I can't compare further.

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich yea...I actually got the mission gold for free with a pallette, in fact it was my 1st color of theirs. The blue jay feather is amazing. I'd love to see a tutorial. Maybe begin with some general tips about feathers although you did some of that already with the Mission gold vs silver review. Then a detailed one about the blue jay feather. Do you think someone could produce similar detail with a student grade paint? I love looking the reviews of all the expensive paint lines, but I'm just starting out and really can not justify that kind of expense.

I just got the Sennelier Sample Pack of 6 full tubes , the 10 ml size, for all of $12.99 at Dick Blick, but Amazon had it for awhile too. I have to say I am underwhelmed. I use M. Graham, QOR, and Daniel Smith watercolors and they have spoiled me for vibrant transparent pigments. The pack has Bright Red and there is no info on it on the Sennelier web site so I assume it is fugitive. I'm glad I tried the pack as well as 3 other colors that were all of $5-6 each, cheap right? , as there was a special for buy 3 Sennelier watercolors and get a lovely Raphael brush free, a brush that runs $30 and has been on my wish list, so it was a good purchase. I agree with you about the best use for these is glazing so I will use these for botanical painting, but I doubt I will buy more.

for the mixing spaces that you would rather have more straight. get the palet to a metal worker a juwelmaker or a Farrier might even be able to help. It might be only due to screws or the joints and could be bent or tightent to get more straight mixingwells and prevent leaking out on the tablet or your hand. maybe I m wrong and it can t be fixed but I thoughts to give you that idea for palets you love but have that disadvantage. before I got disabled one of my Jobs I had was being an licensed Farrier. studied in Tucson Arizona for it. If I lived in Maine I would ve loved to see if I could make that pallet more workable.

I just got this set on Amazon for $39.99 and I was alarmed when they arrived unwrapped. All my other half pan palettes came with the little pans individually wrapped. We’re yours wrapped? Also they were the the hard extruded tablet like paint pucks like my Cotman and I was thinking that because of the honey they would be softer? But from this video it looks like yours were the hard blocks as well? I’m just trying to make sure I got the real thing. :)

You're correct: the Lucas watercolors do not glaze well. Most Lucas colors become incredibly opaque and chalky when glazed. IMO, they turn into a total disappointment if you begin to overworked them at all. Some colors are horrendous due to the amount of white pigment added.
