Thanks for your review. I am using iFi Zen DAC v1. balanced connection with HD660s. Very happy with the results. They are very detailed, smooth, natural and realistic sound with a touch of warmth. With 150 ohm impedance I never need to turn the volume above 11 o’clock. As it is not heavy, I can listen for a few hours without feeling fatigue. I mainly listen to classical music which I think HD660s is ideal for this genre. No matter it’s Chopin’s nocturne (solo piano) or Schubert’s string quartets or symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler involving 100 + pieces of instruments of varied tones and textures, the HD660s reproduces them with ease and accuracy. The HD660S makes me feel I am sitting right in the best seat of the concert hall.

I don't think the comfort is that big of an issue, I had no problems at all and friend who auditioned them also didn't notice any issues with clamping force or anything else. It probably depends on your head shape/size. As far as differences go from 650's I would say these are faster, tighter base, better resolution, no veil, great treble, bigger soundstage. For anyone who stumbles across this vid and this comment, I will say the clamp force on the HD 660s is incredibly high out of the box. Now, after 3-4 months of use they are snug - Just the right clamping force and good fit

I got my 660s today: They are everything u described: warm, super detailed, punchy enough bass (tho not much), almost no soundstage. My big problem: The 16k band is non existent. This means the highs have no air at all. They sound muffled, not there, it's like they don't even exist. I fixed it by adding +7db in the 16k band. It completely change to a detailed monster with decent, yet still relaxed highs. If u have these, please try bumping the 16k frequency just for a few minutes. You'll be amazed if you do love thick sound, but also somewhat detailed highs.
@user-vi3tb3bw5t5 жыл бұрын
Give them a bit to break in. Owning 650s I know that I was feeling the same way but once the transducers break in and the pads they will usually open up. That being said, the 650s and the 600 line in general are known for being "veiled" in the highs. I also add 5db on the top and the bottom as well that turns the wolly bass in to a deeper darker poppier bass hit.

Finally I bought one(used, but perfect), upgrading my HD579. I can't to put into words how good it is. It's incredible with really high quality jazz music (but with others too), I'm using it with a bit bass boost now.(45hz, +6db) I think the vocals on 579 are brilliant(!) too, maybe the biggest differences: clarity is better and musical instruments are a lot more realistic on HD660S. I feel like the music is more clear, alive and accurate, mainly with Jazz music. The HD579 is really good with its price, I think that must be enough for most people to enjoy music on a good level. I think the extra price(3x) is worth it only for audio/music fans like me, for only enjoying the music(all genre) I still can recommend the 579. After hours with 660s, and putting back the 579, I can't say that is a bad headphone, becouse less clarity and reality hiding on a good/not bad way (after a short time my brain and ears can like that sound again, but with some tracks the difference is really big - for Jazz or something like that doesn't hesitate to buy this, It worths every penny). It maybe can help for some people, who are plannig but hesitating to upgrade from 579/598, and beginners like me.:) The only bad thing, I can't stop listenning this now.:) With the highest quality/and enginered tracks it really mindblowing for me.

I'm still stuck on choosing the 660s or the 600 . I just want the vocals to sound natural and not metallic as I've heard people say . Which do you think has a more natural sounding tone in terms of vocals ? .
@JohnSmith-oe4bw6 жыл бұрын
Compared to the 600/650, I like the added weight in the mid bass up to about 1k. What I DON'T like, is the added 2-3db dip between 1.5-5k. The 660s sacrifices detail for beef/tone. It's a good headphone, but I think the 600/650 are better balanced, tonally.
@JohnSmith-oe4bw6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 650's can sound "spongy". Like when you turn up the volume, the sponge effect persists. You listen to metal, so you should be able to still hear the difference in guitar string attack (on lead lines, for instance) between the 600/650 & 660s. I'm listening to the new Priest on 48/24 HD tracks, switching between these HP's, and the crispness of the guitars is a little muted on the 660s.

@theoperator17616 жыл бұрын
I have both. The aeon is a great. It has a bit more bass, and a tad more soundstage. Very comfortable and just overall a clean sounding headphone. The 660s have great mids, seems to have a boost in bass in the mids and highs. Surprised that I actually enjoy edm on theses... Very rarely some songs will sound shrill. Personally, I prefer the 660s as a daily driver. The aeon is extremely comfortable and can be worn for long periods, but they feel a bit clunky on my head in comparison to the 660s. I like velour pads for long sessions and the 660s do that right. There is clamp, but after a long time they do loosen and fit like a glove. For price consideration, the aeons also require high current amps which can be more expensive, the 660s you can get away with less.

Your enthusiasm for the 660 S reminds me of your Yamaha HPH-MT5 review (BTW from which I immediately bought the MT5's). I'm using headphones for mixing & mastering when I'm out of the studio ( - monitors Neumann KH120). The MT5's have worked out very close to Neumann's yet the mids tend to shout and actually the MT5 bass while very present and fast has proved to be slightly lean compared to my monitors and when heard on other systems; the MT5 soundstage just a bit too 'electronic' and flat. I've tried : Fidelio X2HR (very weird wavy EQ), AKG 550 III ('grey' sounding, clashy and confused, raised pitch, I really hated these), DT700 80ohm (expansive but mids recessed and highs too 'aluminium-foil'). Now I'm wondering about Fostex TR50RP. Finding the right 'mixing/monitor' headphone is getting expensive! ...so the MT5's remain on my head (BTW I don't know why they aren't more popular - I'm currently the only person on Amazon to have reviewed them!). Anyway back to the HD 660 S; I'm needing to use headphones with minimal gear, something that can be driven from a MacBook Pro, the MT5 are fine and very loud, the DT770 80ohm are ok, loud enough. I do also use a Motu UltraLite interface when out of the studio but not always. Could the HD 660 S be what I'm looking for? - tonally rich, detailed and spatially expansive, open-back is fine. £430 here in the UK, a lot (esp compared to the MT5), but would be worth it if they deliver. BTW another great review, love how you twist your shoulders while reimagining sonic experiences and bringing them to words!

...thanks for the instant reply, almost as if you were in the room! I'll order them and see how they translate.

After further research I think the 660's will not reveal the bass freq that I require. Often there are unwanted 'thumps' in live recorded tracks that some headphones hide - yet most speakers reveal; when mastering I need to fully hear into that region to eq them out, or re-record. The MT5's are serving well, even better, oddly enough, than the DT770 - in terms of revealing those low freqs. However detailed the 660's are, I think they might be just too polite in the bass. I've just ordered a 'made in Japan' set of phones (that have no reviews) - I'm experimenting with my instinct, and yes this is for studio use, not 'home listening' (though both worlds shouldn't be mutually exclusive). I'll report back ...if that's ok.

You pour your heart and soul into your reviews, so detailed and to the point, I love them and this one is no exception. Actually you have me sold on these but unfortunately at this moment HD 660s are too pricey, 500€ on amazon.it or 430€ on amazon.de i hate to say it but they will have to wait for a few months. In the meantime I was thinking about buying PXC 550 because of the ANC and Bluetooth options, I commute a lot and I want better sound than my earphones can provide. Yes I know they cannot compare but I would still like to hear your opinion, knowing that PXC 550 can connect through wire as well and do have BT4.2 with aptx support. I saw and read a lot of good and semi good reviews for PXC 550 and I have to admit I'm pretty much set on buying them, but no one covered this segment wired and BTW difference and how they stand with the higher end models like HD 660s. So I would very much like to hear your judgement. Note I love that flat-ish sound you mentioned and I'm stepping up my audiophile game from ATH M40x (which I love) with fiio k1 a very budget option to PXC 550 and HD 660s with SMSL AD18. Thank you very much, if you don't have time even a few words in the comment would suffice. Cheers

@paulcoddington6645 жыл бұрын
I ended up putting up with the initial discomfort and used my head. I was worried doing it any other way came with the risk of overdoing it - too loose, the bass extension might be compromised if there is insufficient sealing of the pads around the ears. Part of the tightness turned out to be not quite extending them far enough (initial fitting is easier with a mirror). The discomfort ended up being very short lived (a day or two). Burn in is a somewhat controversial topic, but I found mine congested and shouty out of the box with subdued treble, almost muffled (HD 650). Pink noise overnight at moderate (not high) levels for 4 days sorted it. It had me worried for a bit, as the out of box sound was unacceptable. I decided it was unlikely to be a fault, as both drivers obviously matched well across the whole frequency spectrum with mono sources. Interestingly enough, the approximate point on the volume control at which they became shouty and congested with music also exhibited a significant shift in the audible balance of pink noise. I deliberately avoided listening to music and paid attention to this to make sure the burn-in effect was more likely to be real (no chance for my brain to "get used" to them). This transition point moved further up the volume control every day and then disappeared altogether within normal volume range (after 4 overnight runs). At which point, there was more high end, more ambience and detail at lower volumes, no congestion and shoutiness on peaks and crescendos. It became obvious why people were raving about them. They compare favorably to the timbre and frequency balance of live acoustic un-miked instruments (including drums and cymbals, especially vocal, piano and guitar), subdued in the high end compared to some other headphones, but not when compared to real life (but perhaps more neutral headphones reveal that many recordings are engineered a bit on the bright side).

When its time to get new oem pads for 600650660 they sell only one model and that's same as 660. I don't have good amp and i like the most vocal range so 660 was no brainer.. Only brands what i like is sennheiser and beyerdynamics. If phones last 10 years can't even use so many before endgame over..

Thumbs up for the great and enthusiastic review. I finally got chance to listen and compare the 6** series at my local headphone shop. I agreed that the 660S hit the sweet spot between 600 and 650. I always prefer the mids of 600 but find its sound stage to be too narrow. However, the price jump from 600 to 660S is quite big. My best bet is the HD58X which appears to sound similar but with slightly more sub-bass. Currently, i am waiting for the shipment to reach my home. Side note: I’m still loving the MT5 which i bought immediately after seeing your review.

You are PRO the reason? U are the only one understand that OLD pads are different than the new ones. I have all 6 series and the NEW Pads are way more conical and the lip like u said feels bad , Also because of the more conical form after some months the NEW pads are getting more down than the old ones, So my ears on the new pads now are touching the inside , something that doesnt happen on the OLD pads that are keept thicker after the same 6 months. Until now i have ordered 2 New 050635 code pads and all of them are the same :(
