Today we battle the new Sennheiser MKE 400 vs the MKE 200 and the Rode Videomicro. As well as take a look at their new Sennheiser XS Lav mic with mobile kit for smartphone vlogging. Are these the best shotgun mics for youtube creators? Better than the Rode videomic pro plus or ntg?
Thank you Sennheiser for sending these mics for review!

You can get rid of all that background noise, just get the Waves plugins from their Restoration pack. X-Noise, X-Hum, X-Click, X-Crackle and Z-Noise. You could just use one of those shotgun mics, remove the noise and be golden with very minimal messing around. Check them out! Also a few simple EQ hacks and you should be able to make the voice even better. You've got the audio knowledge from working with your music. The perfect microphone is here!

There is a new Vlogging kit from Rode. Rode vologging kit universal. It's a kit which has a mic, plastic stand, phone holder and copy of the cude light. Please could you give me your opinion on it. Its only 150€ but i think it is over priced 😅

Finally someone testing the handling noise on the MKE 400! I bought the MKE 200 a week ago and the handling noise made me think twice about also getting the MKE 400. This is the first review of many that points out this . This was not an issue with the Rode VideoMicro and I did not think about it before I got the MKE 200. Now I will get the MKE 400 as it dont have that issue. THANK YOU!

I love both Rode and Sennheiser, I have and use both Rode and Senny, the wireless go 1 and 2, the videomicro, and NT1-A, as well as the MKH 416 and ME66/K6 and they all sound really great... BUT, each one has their strengths and weaknesses. I found the VideoMicro sounded better overall than the MKE200, but the MKE400 sounded noticeably better than the other 2, but still that audio compression that your phone does to it hurts the soul. Video is relatively subjective, you can get away with a lot, but audio isn't, your audio must always be as good as you can possibly get it, you may not feel it's quite as important but your viewers definitely notice, good comparison tho, enjoyed the video.

This new MKE400 seems to be fantastic. I love the way it sounds in most reviews I have seen, including yours. I am somewhat tempted. I have the MKE600, it is a fantastic microphone, but a bit too conspicuous on top of a cellphone :) :) In your video the Rode sounded great as well. The MKE200 sounds like a cheap microphone, which it clearly isn't...

If it helps, as a sound engineer, I preferred the Rode Videomicro on-camera (outdoors) sound and the Sennheiser 400 in your office. The Comica and Sennheiser lavs were quite similar, quality wise, but the Comica just edged it a bit with a slight top end boost to it. I am SOOOO enjoying your videos dear sir. They are making me chuckle and feel good through these crazy lockdown times in the UK. You're going to have to introduce me to who this "Tony" character is though. Maybe there are several folk called Tony as well?? (you say "Tony 2") sometimes. All a bit blurry without putting a face to the name... ( ;) ) Thanks for all you're doing :)

“Toneh” is Tony Northrup, the KZbin camera/lens reviewer who seems obsessed with “bokeh”, out of focus blur. He had recently shot a video at f1.2... So Kasey made a video about Tony’s search and need for Toneh. K always parodies and lambasts everyone, and everyone’s values, himself included.

There's a cultural difference between Rode and Sennheiser. The clarity of the MKE 400 compliments most languages where the bass bias of Rode seems very targeted at English speakers which sound throaty. Easily accomplished on the Sennheiser by cutting highs in post and boosting low mids a bit, while the reverse of boosting highs on the Rode would also boost preamp noise. Sennheiser is definitely a winner in my opinion, although the lack of handling noise reduction on the MKE 200 is a fail.

I was a bit lost and at the end, I'm not sure which mic is best for my usage. On a lighter note, I know it's trivial but it seems that the best profile is the right side for you. You are very different depending on the angle you choose (right or left). Fascinating.

Hi mate, was wondering if you could clarify whether or not you can record audio EMI-free when you are at home and your camera is plugged into the wall adapter? My Rode VideoMic Pro works perfectly when recording with cameras powered by battery, BUT, when recording when the cameras are powered by their AC wall adapters the audio always picks up an EMI buzz in the BG. Really frustrating! Cheers, mate, for any light shed on this.

Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I have never used a microphone for my Lumix GH5, also because it has a good mic. incorporated. Please let me understand, this is not a criticism. If you are vloging, to shoot only a few minutes where the microphone is actually useful in a working day, but unfortunately you have to leave it on the camera all the time causing you only some annoyance. My question: how useful do you see it to those who do not do any interviews, etc. etc.? Thanks for your thought.

I have tried with the Rode Lav and it worked quite well, but I am now super curious about the Senheiser cutting out the BG noise. As at major events where its better to be more incognito with a smaller cam and a 'hidden' mic setup that combo would be awesome.

The MKE 400 for the studio, for sure. But... Amazingly, the Sony X3000 still has the best mics for un-tethered outdoor sound. Puts Sennheiser to shame. (I just went back to one of my own videos to test and.., holy crap it's good! -Doesn't reject background noise, but it's so clear and good at picking up voice at Vlogging distance, it doesn't matter.) Sony made a deal with the devil for that one. -Probably in exchange for promising to never make another good action cam again. If only a princess would kiss Sony and release them from the curse...

one of the things my planned channel will do is audio lessons and tips and secrets episodes. I could do very detailed episodes on several topics you touched on. I am very impressed that you could run +20dB off the mic without hiss because that's pretty much a no-no in audio. You really never want to do that if possible. the mk400 definitely sounded better in my opinion even though it has the higher low-end roll off of 50Hz (mk200 is 40Hz) the mk400 sounded warmer and better to me. The mk400 also has a higher SPL capability which means you can put it in a louder environment. the low pass filter will not filter out back-ground noise. In your case I would probably never use it. Low pass is maybe if you are doing a VOICE interview in an area where maybe there is a lot of "bass" from music and you want to cut out the bass before it ever gets to the pre-amp (will make your voice pick up cleaner). you also touched on the super-cardioid pattern. That has to do with the "directivity" of the audio pickup. SUPER-CARDIOID means the microphone is just as "directional" direction as a cardioid is facing forward but the difference is that the super cardioid picks up a close range space from the rear. both the 200 and 400 are "super cardioid". if you want something that is "much" more directional, then you want a shot-gun mic because that sucker will pickup what is dead center ahead but not much to the sides (in particular) left or right of center screen on your camera.. I emailed your vegetable police my email starts with "burf". you are more than welcome to ask me audio questions. I love your channel so I will definitely reply. you may know way more about audio than you lead on in this video. if your preamps are hissing then I would not crank up the gain on the camera-- I would TRY not to crank the mics either-- never use low pass. but in post you can add a "gain" plugin on your video editing software and you can boost the signal there. I have some very significant tricks for mixing audio from cameras ALSO--> one thing if you want to master your camera audio, I could take an audio sample from you put it into my studio and I will mix it perfectly to analyze what is needed to get perfect sound from whatever mic it is you are using.. THEN I can send back to you the tweaks I did that way you can make some audio presets for your camera audio tracks that you just cut-n-paste and BAM! you got epic audio every time. that said, in my email I recommended some other sennheiser mics for you.. they are heavier so I can see if you don't like my choice especially for vlogging but if you had to choose between these two, 400 all the way. I could EQ that and give you some compressor settings that really sweaten that up while maintaining natural sound and not sounding like you have an effect on there.
@fuglbird
@fuglbird 2 жыл бұрын
@RAILWAY FILMS You wrote: "Low pass is maybe if you are doing a VOICE interview in an area where maybe there is a lot of bass from music and you want to cut out the bass before it ever gets to the pre-amp (will make your voice pick up cleaner)." NO! That's a high pass filter (or low cut filter). The high pass filter is normally used to reduce wind noise. It may also remove some of your handling noise but proper vibration isolation is better. Vibration isolation will also help against focus noise and zoom noise from the camera. Low pass filters are used for removing high frequency sounds to avoid aliasing. You cannot recover from aliasing in post. Aliasing corrupts your audio signal in the entire frequency range. Your microphone will give some inbuilt low pass filtering but often only -10 dB at 20 kHz. You can always do high pass filtering in post - only limited by your dynamic range.

I watched several videos. Røde, Sennheiser, Deity D4 mini. In the end, the Røde Videomicro sounds better than most, is great at eliminating background noise, best price/performance. Only the Sennheiser MKE 400 sounds better and has some extra features. But it costs 3 to 4 times as much. The MKE 200 sounds very thin and sensitive to some handling noise. The Deity D4 mini is good, but it allows more background noise than the Røde and costs almost the same. Too bad, as the form factor of the MKE 200 makes it very portable and discreet. If the MKE 400 price was just twice as the Røde Videomicro, I'd probably upgrade.

The Rode Videomicro is just stupendously good for its price.

Not sure if he screwed up the audio. I've heard a lot better audio from all of these 3 mics in 1 single video comparison with no editing.

Cardioid means that, if you plot the sensitivity of the mic on a polar graph, the shape of said sensitivity is heart-shaped.

I'm thinking of buying a cheap knockoff of the Rode Videomicro Ultracompact, because my a6400 doesn't pick up the sounds of the birds I am shooting. I'm hoping that this way, the depth to which I fall down the rabbit hole would be shallow.

A low pass filter is the same thing as a high cut filter, so of course your voice wouldn't get less "bassy".

The reason it doesn't work on your phone is because if you connect it via USB c, the audio isn't going into the dac that is in your phone. Signal only goes to the dac through audio jacks. If your phone doesn't have audio jacks, you may need an external dac

With regard to audio, your real underperformer is the Huawei. It sounded as though somebody took a rusty butter knife and hacked a chunk out of the top-end. It was as though someone was speaking from within a full hall closet, that happened to be underwater. Tiny creatures wept, openly.

A low pass filter is not doing what you think it does. It filters high frequencies.

What kind of mic does Howard Stern use ? His voice is amazingly deep on his show, but he sounds like anybody else on other shows (interviews). That is your assignment for your next video. Well, we'll give to a week for your answer.

On the phone -- both lav mics were quite bassy -- too bassy for my tastes (hmmm, what does bass taste like?) -- though the Senn was a tab clearer. The MKE 200 lost all bass and was a bit thin. The MKE 400 was a better overall balance of bass/mid/treble. On the Fuji -- MKE 400 +20dB -- clearer than on the phone, but a little more traffic noise. From the back it sounds like you are living in a cardboard box. MKE 200 on Fuji sounds thinner than 400. Handling noise when you tested MKE 200 -- yikes! Rode VideoMicro *NONE*! (but more road noise)

I have the metal phone mount. I like how solid it is, plus the cold shoe on top. The new lens looked amazing! The Rode mic sounded like crap after all the other mics. But I think you kind of lose the feel of the atmosphere without some of the city noises.
